Don't know where your fuel cut is but your dealer should tune it using their select monitor to plot the spool up curve on full throttle in 4th gear (5th is too fast for the public road!) They should set it so you get a nice controllable spool up with no overshoot, but not too slow(!) and there should be a margin of a little bit so that on cold/foggy days you don't hit overboost again.

The correct position for the valve is by trial and error. Anyone sensible would start with the valve full open and get somewhere around 8-12PSI (slightly more than just connecting without any restrictor as the valve fully open still presents some restriction). Then turn in 1/2 turns closing the valve and drive until the boost is looking about right. After a day or so you might need to fine tune it a bit after you get a feel for how it is going. Much better than a restrictor in this respect.

Thumbs up

Hi John,

I have ordered the valve from Festo, the one you recommended: part# 151216.

Can you post your diagram again as all I get is a little box with a red X in it.

Thanks,
Ray

Hey, Ray...

Here is a diagram of my install (nothing to do this morning, so why not waste some time!)...

I mounted the valve by making up a bracket to fit alongside the connectors to the right of the solenoid valve, just under the plastic cover. I wanted to get it away from the turbo heat and it also is hidden quite well there.

I used 3.5mm internal diameter hose and replaced all the factory stuff. I also used (as per John's recommendation) hose clips on all pipe connections.

The blue line is from the manifold (turbo side), the red going back via the T-piece to the actuator solenoid.

I found that 6.25 turns from wide open worked well, but I started out with it fully open and worked slowly down from there.

Good luck!

Bret

I did the same but with shorter hoses. Sorry don't have the diagrams anymore.

Havent read this post in great detail, but check out Autospeeds DIY Audi boost control and related links. Sounds very similar. Im also using a pneumatic valve as a fcd.

Is this solution still working ok? I'm having boost problems after a few intake mods and this idea sounds really interesting.

Anyone fitted the #151216 festo valve?

Any photos of the installation?

Thanks
Claes

Still working fine... no overboosting at all - I'm pondering winding it on another half turn or so...

Its been on over 12 months I think now.

I notice that the diagram link doesn't work anymore but have a look at the autospeed article. It is similar, but remember that the late model cars have two-port solenoids, not three.

(This is Claes again. Different names at home and at work... Silly)

Ok, good news. I ordered the valve.

Shouldn't I just place the valve where the restrictor was? Does the length of the tubing matter?

Don't know... it doesn't seem to make any difference. Anyone else know?

The reason I located mine over by the solenoid was to keep it a little further away from the heat and have somewhere firm to mount it rather than having it just in-line with the hoses.

Goodness this thread from 2001 is still going

I tried to keep hose length to a minimum.
