the reason i ask is my car has cost me in the region of £17,000.

What has yours cost you?

I am not being elitest, it all down to the amount of risk. If i was driving a £2k tuned jap car around then i might not worry so much.

Do you get my point?

Cheers

Just to clarify the jap car tuner who gave me the advise re the cocklink didn't only tune £2k jap cars.

When i was there they had a number of supra's, skylines, and subaru's in the workshop and the odd escort cosworth..

Oh, and my MY99 has 320bhp, so I kinda like to know when the merchants at my local shell have been putting Ribena in the storage tanks for sh*ts and giggles again!

If you've modified your car, you really should have one- if you've got a std car it's probably overkill!

BTW it should be turned to MAX sensitivity, if you see lights get it checked out, don't turn it down!! That's like hearing your smoke alarm at night, switching it off and going back to bed!!

Pete's more of a Burger King man, hence his disapproval of Kn(c)ocklinks

Unless you have it calibrated properly. Mine was set to Max and would light up into the red whenever over 6750 rpm. However at Power Engineering last Saturday the car was put on the rollers and DET CANS were used (pslewis's favourite headphones!). No det was heard anywhere in the rev range so, my knocklink at least, does not need to be on Max.

Like i said, i would not worry about a knocklink if i had an old banger like yours.

There is obviously something wrong with you. so i wont excite you any more as i was told not to mock the inflicted.

It also proved that it's foookin' useless!!

Why was it showing RED when there was NO DET WHATSOEVER across the whole rev range??

The idea is that it detects DET - it fails to do that or throws up spurious warnings ........................ best place for it is in the bin!!

You are not understanding the function of the device, it detects excessive noise being generated by the engine, this could be detonation or some other noise, but either way, excessive noise from the engine, especially at high revs needs to be investigated. Or you put your head in the sand and wait until the tiny background noise that the Knocklink is detecting, turns into a bloody loud noise which even an old tosser like you could hear.

It was showing RED when there was NO DET WHATSOEVER because it hadn't been calibrated yet. If you had some powers of deduction you may have gathered that from the post.

I see, so it picks up all kinds of noise does it???

OK, take your point ..... HOW THE HELL CAN IT PICK UP A TINY BACKGROUND NOISE AMONGST EVERYTHING ELSE THEN??

How does it single out a noise? Does it select a frequency range and JUST homes in on that?? This would make sense ... but you have just said it detects excessive noise coming from the engine which may not be DET - so, it hears every frequency??

Like I said - throw it in the bin .....

HA HA HA HA what absolute TOSH!!

Because it hadn't been calibrated ..... ha ha ha ha ha ha - calibration takes the form of turning DOWN the sensitivity!!! Rendering it utterly USELESS!!

Yes, the Knocklink is frequency selective. Bingo, now your understanding.

I was under the impression from the above that it picked up general noise - but you are now saying it only hears certain frequencies .....

What frequency does it hear then??

Do I really look stupid enough to own a COCKLINK???

I certainly hope NOT! I am an experienced Engineer ... it would NOT do me any good having a Random Light Generator on my dashboard!!

It works the same way as the factory fitted knock detector, it detects excessive noise, then the oe knock circuit retards the ignition via the ecu to protect the engine, the knockilnk gives a visual indication of excessive noise, you immedeiatley throttle back, used with aftermarket ecu's without knock/ign retard(apexi)

The more recent Impreza models 99- can have their ecu remapped more easily, (ecutek) and keep the oe knock feature. You can then monitor this from a further device (delta dash) which gives a knock count level due to a problem, ie det or some other detected noise.

andy97 - respect from me for a good answer ... it almost makes sense

If it is there because the ECU being used has no retard facility then I can see where it could be of use ...... but, of more use would be some device to retard the ignition if det is detected (not simply backing off on the throttle).

I cannot believe that anyone would be so stupid as to fit an ECU which has no retard ability!?

It not a case of stupidity, its a general case that for example the Apexi has very good features but for a reasonable price. The more upmarket aftermarket ecu's do have knock/ retard function, but are very expensive.

The Apexi does have knock detection and will alert you via the CEL is it becomes excessive, however the Knocklink does a better job in alerting the driver that something is amiss.

Im pleased you can now see, that there is a need to fit such a device, a big step forward for you I must say

Bl*ody hell! You feeling alright Pete? For such a talented engineer, you do not have a very good understanding of modern engines.
Personally, I think you 'do' know what you're talking about, you just like to watch people regergitate the same old story again.... and again..... and again.

And a CockLink simply tells you that something is knocking in the engine bay - I have yet to see HARD facts that it has saved ANY engine whatsoever!

If you have modified your car so much that it runs the very real risk of blowing up then you are really, really stupid! A CockLink simply reminds you on a daily basis that you have taken the car outside of its design envelope so much that you need Likkle lights to make you feel better!
With due respect, I'd rather take advise from a solicitor ...& again, when you fully understand how a franchised outlet works you may be able to comment on who I should/should not be sueing.

& one single fact remain's ...not all engine's that let go are caused by 'people foookin about with the car'

Your argument against knocklink's seem's to be about as valid as your argument's against gold wheels.

& as for posting under multiple user names ...dont judge us all by your standards
