CockLinks work wonders ..... my neighbour had a dodgy hip, it kept clicking.

He was advised to fit a CockLink - he attached the knock sensor to his hip - strapped the LEDs to his spectacles.

He was getting RED lights at first, with every single click of the hip, the instructions said turn down the sensitivity until he only saw the odd GREEN light.

He turned the sensitivity down and now he only gets a GREEN light if his hip actually clicks out of its socket and the ambulance is needed .......................... the hips still click but he doesn't get any RED lights - so he sleeps at night and is most happy!!

I recall the instructions saying 'set to max sensitivity'. Where does it say 'adjust until only greens show'??

But pslewis, surely any intelligent person would have the so called cocklink professionally calibrated using det cans and if after calibration they then saw red lights they would take the car to be professionally inspected rather than turn down the sensitivity

DET CANS???

DET CANS???

Another one of my pet hates ..........

Some geek with fooookin poxy headphones on??? Playing with his LapTop while charging you £700 for the priveledge???

Yeah .... all makes sense now

Like I said, if you crap your pants when the car misses a beat, buy one - you will sleep easier - REAL men need NOT apply!!

My advice? Use these .... http://www.pixelaid.net/graphics/images/cans.jpg

They will do as much good ... use your ears ... and allow the ECU to adjust, which it does many times a second!! Faster than the human eye can see a LED illuminate think about it and react (your engine has melted in that time if its going to!).

Engine failures are down to people foookin about with the car .... NOT the fact that you have no CockLink to look good with down at the local Maccie-Deees

What about the common oil pump failure on classic shape Imprezas?
The low pressure oil light comes on at something stupid like 1 bar, when normal pressure is 6 bar!
A knock link would detect det due to rising oil temps way before that poxy light ever came on.

So my completely standard GT4's engine letting go 3 miles after a fill up was due to it being foooked about with was it? ...nothing to do with the detergent that was found in the tank? ...or that the pump had just been changed from diesel to Super U?

Lets look at the FACTS shall we?

You said that your engine destroyed itself 3 miles after leaving the petrol station?

Assuming that you travelled 1/2mile after the engine let go .....

So, 2 1/2miles after leaving the forecourt your engine actually went bang?

Do you expect us to believe that dodgy fuel smashed your engine in such a short space of time??

Were you the very FIRST person to use that pump after it was switched from dispencing diesel?

Is your car TOTALLY standard? You cleverly said 'engine' ... what about the rest??

I assume the petrol station is paying in full for your damage?

Lets assume we are in some world where the impossible happens - what would you have done if the CockLink had shown RED 2 1/2miles down the road?? (Remember, the dodgy fuel would have taken 2 miles to reach the engine!) ............. just interested in what action you would have taken??

I'll tell you what you would have done .... RED light shows, your eyes and brain registers it, brain tries to work out if it means anything or is just background noise, brain decides whether action is needed, you lift off throttle, car cruises to a stop ..... engine saved? Not looking at the pistons and con-rods bouncing down the tarmac behind you it isn't!!

Truth is, you would be too late!! A CockLink tells you that your engine has blown ... I don't need anything to tell ME if thats happened!

Pslewis,

You know full well that the knocklink is used mainly by owner of cars, which have been modified and are running nearer to the edge of safety than the standard mapped car. The knocklink is only an instrument to inform you of noise from the engine. You also know full well that the sensitivity setting is for the knocklink is should be left at maximum, unless you car has a particularly noisy engine. By your reasoning you would ignore your temperature gauge if it started to go into the red or cel light if it came on, probably by pulling the bulb out.

**** off and leave those owners who wish to add a further device, which gives an instant indication that something is amiss with their car.

The FACTS we're a holed piston ...a mechanics report (who thought id actually filled up with diesel & thus drained the tank of its 'red sludge'), an engineers report (Det was in his opinion the cause) & a subsequent fuel analysis, which found large traces of detergent & a RON rating of about 80 (& way outside the ECU's ability to retard ignition) ...this all on a 50K FTSH engine, no mods & driven sympathetically (warm up, warm down)

I was 'advised' that a claim against a large petrol co. would be lengthy & costly with no guarantee of success due to the contaminates could have entered the tank at any point ...& I had little stomach at the time for a fight.

Would a knocklink have saved my engine? Possibly/possibly not ...depends if id had the time/inclination to react to what would have been Blackpool illuminations on my dash

I bought an STi5 Type R, from somewhere toward the north end of the M6 (just so we're not being too specific.... some of you know the story). Filled it with Super at a petrol station. Spent three hours on the M6 while the AA got a transporter to pick it up.

IF the car had been fitted with a knock (****- maybe not...) link IT would have indicated DET before it got so bad it was audible with the human ear, and I could have backed off and maybe saved the engine.

Sorry Pete, on this occassion, and with regard to your infamous '**** link', IMHO experience I have to say you're talking through your ****. The **** link is of real use to anyone who has modified their Impreza (although f all use as a mod on its own....)

With due respect - these FACTS would enable you to sue the Petrol Station ... no need to sue a Multi-National Oil Giant!!! It's the Petrol Station you have the claim against!!

The only reason that you would NOT sue is if the evidence is not quite as bullet-proof as you make out.

And a CockLink simply tells you that something is knocking in the engine bay - I have yet to see HARD facts that it has saved ANY engine whatsoever!

If you have modified your car so much that it runs the very real risk of blowing up then you are really, really stupid! A CockLink simply reminds you on a daily basis that you have taken the car outside of its design envelope so much that you need Likkle lights to make you feel better!

Due respect accepted, thank you

The car was standard- that's how it was when I bought it 15 miles earlier- and that how it was when it let go. Fact.

Imports are designed to use 100 RON fuel, no exceptions. If you run them on UK fuel, they will go bang, usually because of det. Someone more technically qualified will no doubt explain this better, I state it from experience of Jap imports.

I'll continie tomorrow when I'm more sober and am able to carry a 'discussion'

You are welcome .......

It's used by the sad souls who don't know one end of a spanner from the other ....... who wouldn't be able to see through a nonsense statement if it jumped up and grabbed then by the bollocks!!

See the statement above who thinks that hot oil = det?????? ...... FFS!! When you are up against stupidity like that it's hardly any wonder some companies clean-up with Mickey Mouse Gimmicks of little worth!!

Like I said ...... if it makes you sleep better - get one.

If you are scared to step on the cracks in the pavement because a monster may arise and devour you - get one.

If your shadow sometimes sends the ****s up you - get one.

If you walk like a REAL man and talk like a REAL man - don't bother!
