Should get the PS3 delivered today!
JJones,
The PS3 version of RR does not have as much detail on the textures, but the game is very smooth and is pin sharp on my 1080p display. Certainly clearer than in 720p on my other display via component on the 360. Having said that though, the PS3 is connected via HDMI which of course the xbox360 that is a pipe dream at the moment. Working with HDMI with the 360 would give a better comparison. At last with a HDMI connection on a screen capable of 1080p a games console matches the sharpness of a PC game. Even playing resistance on my 1080p monitor (even though this is a 720p game) it is very sharp and the graphics are excellent..... easily as good to look at as COD3 on the 360 (but then that is being displayed via component, so again not apples for apples).
I'm just downloading Motorstorm, so will get some pics up later (yep... that means the machine is locked as its downloading
).
All in all things are looking good though.
drb5,
This machine can only play NTSC region 2 discs (films), but is not what I bought the machine for, so not bothered about that.

Quick roundup of the story so far:
+
Machine looks very swish, with a black marble effect finish.
Machine I have (Japan) works ok direct to 240v supply.
Games are apparently region free.
Has a number of memory card slots for game saves (if wanted), CF, Mini SD and Sony sticks.
Wi-Fi built in.
Very quiet (like you cant hear it).
Control pad is wireless and comes with a USB lead to charge it up with from PS3.
Very easy to setup and get on-line (especially if you are used to the PSP control panel).
Pin sharp graphics via HDMI lead and 1080p capable display.
Controllers feel good.
-
The on-line connection just dropped while downloading a demo (is it flaky?).
Need to run a comparison, but perhaps you need to invest in an expensive display to get the best out of it graphically.
Launch software is not very varied.
It's a HD console, but only comes with AV leads (big mistake).
Machine is locked when downloading content.
Still loads to play with etc, so will get more info as I find out.
If you guys want to know anything I will try and answer.
It looks very promising though.

Was just curious, as i'd end up buying and HD/Blue-Ray player later anyways.
So far, is it worth the money you paid?
TBH I don't think because it is connected via HDMI it means that the picture is clearer. As I believe connecting through component will give just as good a picture.
Microsoft have already said that the 360 will do HDMI its just not required at the moment.
What do you think of the controller compared to the 360 one ?

It makes me laugh reading the supply issue, i remember Sony laughing at the 360 issue claiming they'll be plenty of consoles to meet demand
Lets face facts though each console have their followers, i personally am a 360 person and have no intention to buy a PS3, and vice versa i'm sure

chrisowe,
As regards to the HDMI vs analogue..... thats what I thought until I plugged the PS3 in via HDMI.
Believe me.... I now have an image that is as pin sharp as a PC image.
The controller is the same old PS2 fair...... works well as you would expect.
Swen6,
I take each console on their merits to be honest. I dont have any favourites of being a fanboy of any kind, although I appreciate many do. When the Wii is released I will get that one as well.

Saw this running in a store on 1080p and it was brilliant:

Any plans to get a movie and let us know how that looks?
(I bet that will be a factor for many people)

Just done a quick comparison (need to get off this thing and spedn some time with the missus
) with RR6 on 360 and RR7 on PS3.
I'm not sure who has been comparing these games before regarding graphics, but from what I have witnessed they are far from realistic comparisons.
PS3 RR7 in 1080p Vs 360 RR6 in 720p - PS3 is MUCH sharper and looks better overall. 360 does have *some* better textures. No surpirse on the clarity front with 1080p though. As this was not really like for like I then tried.....

The only thing I can put it down to (since on the last test they are both running in the same res) is that the PS3 is HDMI and the 360 is analogue.
MS really need to sort a digital output soon!!
In terms of base graphics there is not much really between these two consoles imho...... at the moment. Although the PS3 does have some awesome particle effects in the games I have played.

I'd be more interested to see some results from the same game running side by side on the two machines, (but of course there aren't any at the moment)...
Plus, have a look here...
DVI vs. HDMI vs. Component Video -- Which is Better?
Some interesting points to think about, and it does sortof explain what I've seen in the real world. I have seen analog conponent displays which looked better (cleaner / crisper) than the hdmi. I guess it also depends a lot on the hardware inside the tv, and not just the connection...

Ok....
I promise I will get some pics up tomorrow night, but in the meantime I have been playing with the Blu-Ray side of things.
I havent actually got any Blu-Ray film discs, but I have downloaded a 1080p Blu-Ray encoded video trailer via my PS3 and the PS Store.
W O W
The clarity is ABSOLUTELY unbelievable!!!!
In fact I have just played a DVD through my Dell 20" Widescreen TFT display and the difference between that and the Blu-Ray demo through the same display is like chalk and cheese.
For the first time on this monitor I have seen a film that shows NO signs of artifacts or blocking (especially as I sit about 2ft away from it) and the image is sooooo sharp it is unreal.
The difference is bigger than between VHS and DVD, believe me.
I have no idea what HD-DVD is like, but I presume the quality is very similar to Blu-Ray.
This sure is the future of video media storage boys and girls!
It will make the CRT fanboys cry with pain!
