Strike, Strike, Strike

In all seriousness what a good deed your all offering, I cant see what the company are really losing out of it all apart from any frontal they have.

He should be thinking about a bloke who's wife may well die leaving him with 3 kids to look after.

Not doing this will trun that whole section of lads against RM Management.

I think RM need to have a long hard look at their HR Director (Probably on £800k+ per Annum) and ask him/her if they think this is the best way to treat what is currently a very loyal and decent workforce ?

was just quoting what the RM guidlines are last night scoob99, but if it were one of my staff, and the staff had come together and offered to cover the shifts, then I'd be very honoured to work with such a great bunch of people.
I presume you lot work in delivery though? By covering this lads duty if he's off for a month, are you not delaying mail on his walk for that month? I know we've had a lot of problems in the delivery sector over the last few years, but the pressure on delivery managers is immense at the moment as the Government Auditor tries to screw RM for all it can By not allowing this lad his month off, I'm sure the manager is only thinking of his bottom line delivery standards, and the pressure he's under to keep them on target.

On another note, I find it very discourageing (sp) to see 2 so called "doctors" happy to sign someone off for dependants leave! RM's sick is one of the worse in British Industry, and the next time your mails late, or is delivered by an albanian lesbian in a wheelchair at 7pm in the evening, blame our woeful sick record and the inability to cover all these "sick" people.
And I find it very discouraging that someone who manages people puts delivery standards ahead of his staff's wellbeing.
His wife's got cancer ffs, but you'd not grant him leave becuase you're worried about the flak you'll take from a govenment auditor becuase some deliveries *might* be late?
Ask yourself this, would your staff appreciate you taking the flak from an auditor more than sticking to the letter of the law?
Exactly.
astraboy.

Very probably if the guy worked for a small company of >10 staff then the boss would have given him the time off even though he could ill afford to lose someone for a month. One imagines that it would be no real hardship to RM to lose someone for a month and yet they play up and risk damaging fragile relationships. I would offer the guy 2 weeks paid special leave and tell him to let him know in the future if he might need some more time. Just my take. dl

Update guys, Today my line manager went to a carerer's meeting and bought this up, all they offered was £150 towards his food bill OR we said we will go and get a load of stuff and raffle it, which we thought maybe a better idea, I also found out today she has to go to and from hospital from 8th December for a month, about a 60 mile round trip for chemo, we will do what we can, beleive me his kids will not go without this xmas, I know all they want is for their mum to be better but it is xmas and me and my friends will make sure they get some presents, good friends are very hard to find and he is a good mate a bloody good laugh and a really hard worker thats why it pee's me off so much, Mind you nothing surprise's me when I was very seriously injured (nearly killed) in a RTA on duty 10 years ago Royal Mail forgot to tell my wife, after 3 hours of being trapped in my van and taken to hospital I was asked where my wife was they rang her and she didn't even know about it she had to get my 2 young sons out of bed and dressed and then drive herself to hospital not knowing if I was alive or dead, the police were going to do it but Royal Mail intervened and said they would go and fetch her but never did.
Cheers
Colin

And after screwing up in such a big way Colin, you're still working for Royal Mail, why? All you seem to do is moan about the company you work for, yet you still work for them. If RM are so bad, leave, and take you're skills as a postman elsewhere. I believe tnt and citypost are starting deliveries soon, go work for them if you're so disgruntled, just don't look at the package of benifits that you'd be leaving behind though, one of the best in the business btw. Be interesting to see what postman will be earning at the trial sites for tnt and the like.

So Chris, that is a typical Royal mail manger's answer, you guys seem to dig your head in the sand and forget about the poor sods who matter to you most when you need a job doing. In fact my line manager is brilliant, I get the help I need, but my point is when it comes to a bad situation they(RM) Just make matters worse.

Are you Shaun / Simon.

If you don't like it **** off.

.

ps It would seem RM Policy is to try and get their long serving employees to **** off so they can employ their wheelchair bound Albanian Lesbians without having to give them any benefits

Jasey, I can kind of see the point you're trying to make, but it doesn't work in this case. Colin is in one breath complaining about how bad RM is, but in the last 10 years, has done nothing about it. Our company is full of people who do nothing but moan about the state of the company, and how crap it is to work for it. I can only speak for the indoor side of our operation, but the benifits are immense in RM. Full pay when off sick for 6 months! 5 weeks holiday, bonus payments when fairly easy to reach targets are met. A very very strong union (and unfortunatly a not so strong management )
In delivery, ask any postman how much time they make every working day. When I worked in deliveries, I'd regulaly make over 2 hours a day to do with what I want. Drivers are in a similar situation, making lots of time for themselves. Meanwhile, we are losing money on a regular basis, regardless of what our bosses might tell us.
Colin strikes me as the usual postman who doesn't know the big picture.

Update Chris, Today we were told our collegue can have his month off to care for his wife, workmates have donated 1, 2 or even 5 days leave to him, Chris,I work inside in the registered locker and am very proud of the job I do sadly Chris as you well know most managers and we have 6 on early's and only one on lates only work upto 8a.m. and then spend most of their time wandering aroud doing sod all,( My Boss seems to be the one only doing work at his computer) you say I don't know the big picture all i know is if RM do not pull their finger out their will be a lot of guys on the dole, but most of them only have themselves to blame because they want to fly around their delivery's and get home ASAP, without thinking what they are doing to themselves as well as the company, but answer me this Chris, do you think it's satisfactory for a company as big as RM not to inform a loved one/partener that they have been involved in a very serious accident with life threatening injuries, because that is what happend to me, so you might forgive me for being a little bit peed off with them, Your comments would be welcome.
Cheers
Colin

Colin, you sound like someone I'd be happy to work with, there aren't that many of us left in RM, and we're just about to hit the xmas casuals time, so we'll be outnumbered by albanian lesbians in wheelchairs any day now!
Sounds like a great result for your collegue, and a credit to your office that his workmates have all chipped in like that. I've never heard anything happening like that and I'd get it in the Courier if I were you.
What you're saying about delivery managers I've heard from other sources too. From a personal level, I've tried to contact our main delivery office after 9pm when on the early shift myself, and had to call the priority locker to get a response, as you guys were the only ones in!
As for the dole, if we don't get the investment, we're not going to survive, simple as. It's no secret that RM are hanging on by their finger nails atm, and without massive investment, which is waiting in the wings, we're going down. Whether the government can afford for us to go down is another matter, we'll have to wait and see on that. 2007 will be a tough year all round I reckon.

What happened over your accident all those years ago is indefensible (sp) and the manager in charge at the time should have been punished/fired. What probably happened is that he passed the buck up the line, and no-one got done for the **** poor management of the situation. Some things don't improve with time

Look forward to hearing about your success in the Courier

(ps, say hello to simo from me, I gave him a lift back from Nurbugring in October )

I'll also be on hospital on xmas day, although with the wife and kids dishing out pressies for everyone unfortunate enough to need to stay there
The wife works in theatre and it's there turn to bring the families along and go visit everyone.
Sounds to me like this unfortunate event has really brought your office a lot closer together too Ask your manager about RM's policy on matching funds raised for charity with a cheque for the same amount upto £500. It may not help your mate and his missus directly, but Cancer Research or a local hospice could benefit in the long run.
I'll pm you my work email if you need to pass it on

I did notice the fuel consumption wasn't so good on the scooby on the trip back, now I know why
