Also seems a bit strange that Microsoft are pushing hd dvd but Vista isnt going to support it initially.

MS probably aren't allowed to include support for either format. They'd get sued for bein anti-competetive. I expect to see a whole load of 3rd party programs instead, (i.e. like power dvd, windvd etc).

A "selling" feature of one fps game on the ps3 (can't remember the name off the top of my head) is that if you go into a room and watch the tv, you can watch a whole film on the screen. Woopeee...

Anyone else heard that GT4:HD will only be coming with a small selection of cars. All the other 750 odd cars will be downloadable from Sonys Live! ripoff..... at a price!

Plus, it's just the old game with updated graphics. It's got the same naff ai and handling as the previous one. Got to wait until the end of next year for GT5 until any real improvements appear...
Get out of this one if you can Sony
News: Sony profits plunge - MarketingWeek

Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony has reported a 94% plunge in profits for the second quarter of 2006. The sharp decline is attributed to the cost of recalling potentially faulty PC batteries and developing the new PlayStation 3 games console.
The company reported that profits had fallen to ¥1.7bn (£7.6m) for the quarter compared to ¥28.5bn (£127m) for the same period last year.
Its gaming division saw a sharp loss of ¥43.5bn (£192m) due to extra costs related to the PS3, which goes on sale in Japan next month but will not be available in Europe until March. The delay is due to supply problems with the console's Blu-Ray disk drive.
The losses were offset by a slight increase in sales during the quarter with increased demand for flat-screen TVs.

Well it's not exactly the biggest console launch, they've only managed to do 2 regions, MS managed a worldwide launch, albeit with limited supply, but it was still a worldwide launch.

I know you think that Sony are Gods and can do no wrong Pete, but if I were them it would be concerning me. Their public image (outside of japan) has taken a real hammering lately, and the delays of the new console combined with reliability concerns can only damage this further.
Even their electronics brands (especially hifi, walkman etc) are not the best any more. It won't kill the company in the short or even medium term, but they are definitely on the decline at the moment.

I suspect the biggest launch may actually be the Wii.

Sony's rep among the hardcore gamer has taken a real hammering, yes, but that isn't, and never has been Sonys target demographic. The man in the street is completley oblivious to the goings on with lik-sang etc.
In terms of the biggest console lanch in history, I was referring to the actual scale and importance of it, as opposed to literal numbers in the short term. Wait until it launches over here, and the media hype surrounding it - it will knock anything else into a cocked hat.

What about the constant MS bashing from Apple owners or the constant bashing the xbox 1 got from ps2 owners? Don't recall seeing you making any comments about them.
MS are not held up as gaming gods, (in fact I get the opposite impression). But the fact is, they have made an excellent console, with an excellent online service, with a good selection of games. The Sony stuff is a year later to market, very expensive for a console, very limited selection of games, and Sonys attitude has frankly been laughable over the last few months. They are their own worst enemy. Perhaps there wouldn't be as much Sony bashing if they actually delivered on their promises and stopped annoying the fanboys

It'll be interesting to see how the European launch goes. They'll have missed the prime xmas period, and (as mentioned before) it is very expensive for a games console, so I wonder how many mums will be willing to buy one for little Johnny. Especially when you can buy a 360 plus a Wii (with games) for the same price as the ps3 without games (assuming the rumoured UK prices are to be believed)...

"Premiuim" is exxentially GT5 Prologue - only meant as a glimpse of what GT5 is going to be like, with only 50 cars and 2 tracks - and a shed load of license tests no doubt...
The extra downloadable content for the GT4 bit is that Polyphony have finally signed a deal with Ferarri so their's and other cars will be what you can download. There have been rumours knocking about that you'll have to pay to make tracks & cars available online - Sony have denied it though saying only content released after the game has shipped will need to be purchesed. - Personally, I cant see them charging for playing GT online - it's their make or break title for online gaming if GT online dies on its **** then so will Sony's online ambitions.

i wonder if the Wii will sell out due to short supply like MS and Sony seem to everytime they release a console. I remember when the Gamecube was released, they were available in shops from day one and never sold out

The PS3 had better be one amazing machine.
Well I'm certainly disappointed in the delays in the appearance of the PS3, but I also believe that if Sony ultimately backed down from the world of consoles, it would be a great shame. Where would the driving competition to force new console designs come from? Hardware development would become complacent although admittedly, stability may become better as lead times become longer due to lack of driving forces to get the product out before your rival. All IMHO of course
I hope to see a major resurgance for Nintendo with the introduction of the Wii.
It's good that MS have put out such a good (when it works
) machine with the 360 as it raises the bar and (hopefully) promotes that competitive side that drives progression on.
