I have a 535d re-mapped to 330bhp and 500ibft of torque. Real world performance is similar to E60 M5. I know because I have driven a v10 M5 in comparison.
The 335d is only 80kg lighter than the 535d. And the 5 series can put the power down better. The 335d does have a better auto box though with the paddle change which is similar to a SMG box for speed of change.
I have yet to drive one but going off what the 535d re-mapped is like it would be mind blowing. The only problem would be getting the power onto the road.
Should make a 4wd manual version.

My experience was definately with the new 3 door coupe. Your 5 series sounds very coolthough. On the 4WD comment, i read somewhere that they do offer an X-drive version in Germany, but felt it wasn't right for the UK market.

The 335d Sport Touring looks fabulous - loads of standard equipment as well!

Steven - why do you want a manual - with that torque the auto box works very well. I suspect that cross country in sport mode the auto will be at least as quick as the manual it works very well. You can always use it in semi-auto mode as well.

If it's only been out three weeks or so you are right, must have been 330d. Although has it been on sale in Europe longer than UK? RHD conversion etc. We often seem to have cars blatting around here a while before they are released (lots of press lanuches, no rain etc). The smoke does seem to give it away as a 330d though.... quick whatever it was

Nido,

My E90 330d has particulate filter(s) and therefore doesn't smoke. If you definitely saw smoke it was an E46 330d, not an E90.

I am sure yours would be the same

The computer will change gear according to exactly what you do with your right foot ..... You can 'control' an auto quite well when used to them - particularly the BMW ones which are the best I have used.

Having driven BMW's flat out in both manual and auto form in real conditions I can honestly say the auto gives you more time to concentrate on other things and IMO - for me at least - was quicker.

On the diesels it is very suited to the engine.

I dunno about being M5 fast - I comfortably left a 535d behind on a 60-140+ pull a couple of months ago, yet my bosses M5 is crushingly faster than my car.

Yeah - flat out, bhp always rules and even the modded 535d is a gaping 170+bhp short of the M5... For 'in gear' slogs, I am sure the 535d is better though. (as you say 'real world')
