Don't get whay everyone jumps on the mk1 clio's handling

They handle very nicely, grip like buggery etc. Yes they will swap ends past the limit easily but the mk2 is still a short wheelbase mid engined car so past the limit it too will swap ends.

I went from a Calibra Turbo with 265bhp (285ft/lbs) to the Golf V6 4 Motion, so a step down from each model you're considering... so I can give a comparitive impression.

Cally - an absolute blast, but every time I booted I was terrified something would go bang, and the 4-wheel drive while not made of porcelain like some people think, was a bit 'thick'

Golf - schmoooooth, but with that immediate kick of power the turbo lacked. The Haldex 4-wheel drive is just, well it's bloody marvellous. for such a heavy car it is amazingly chuckable. I've got the recaro leather seats and by God they're comfortable. I have faith in car and really enjoy driving it - love the V6 growl!

I say Golf. (my model is completely debadged and the ONLY way you can from the outside that it's the 2.8V6 is from the exhaust, and you have to know what you're looking for... I love surprising people with it's handling in the bends )

Never owned an R32 Golf but have owned a mk.1 Clio. I really liked it, went fast enough, sounded great, looked like no other car on the road.

But be prepared, I'm not the most extrovert of people and the attention the car got was too much at times. Seriously have a think if you can put up with people mauling your car when you're not around (parked it up and gone shopping etc).

Never forget a bloke in 360 Modena on the *** near where I live slowing down to look at the Clio lol ...Ferrari dude stops to look at a Clio wtf lol!

i think the consensus speaks for itself its got to be the R32

1. its german
2. AWD the most sofisticated system ever
3.3.2 V6 is unbreakable and power everywere especially with a slight remap?
4. well built
5. NOT FRENCH

wereas the clio
1.IS FRENCH
2. too uncompramised for road use i would like to have one round a track but hand it back wen i done !
3. and i have never met anybody who has owned a french car that has not had at least one serious problem with it

GO GERMAN , go stealth
4.
