I received my bill yesterday for the duty from TNT. Not as bad as it could have been, as it was £34 for two kits.

YES. it is illegal to drive with your fogs on when it is not foggy.

Also it will hurt your eyes more so, so i have heard on here

 

I got my bill yesterday, from TNT. £30.88. Sent the chq off yesterday to them.

 

Hmmm, seems TNT have got wise to the selling of these kits...

So we're looking at £30 for a single kit and £35 for 2 kits (TAX)? ...not too bad I guess, but a cost others will have to be prepared for when ordering from now on.

I ordered 2 kits and have received them... just gotta wait and see when Mr Postman delivers my bill from TNT!

 

BTW, what did they declare the value of the goods??? @cough@ under 30usd is @cough@ tax ok!... thats how much its really worth for my kit!!! !

 

Its anything over £18.00 GBP that they charge.

 

Er I won;t be too happy at paying duty, I thought the web site claimed no duty..?

 

I don't seem to have been charged (touch wood). I'm confused how they could charge me though, the only price mentioned in the box is $17. Did you guys have different documents? How could they find out the true value?

I think its pot luck really... if they get the hint that these are coming thru thick and fast it wont fool them when the box says £17 value... but then again I havnt had a duty bill... touch wood - altho £30 wont exactly break the bank.

I do understand the concern that some may have with this extra charge not outlined from the start, but its one of those things that you cant foresee at the begining and only after things take off you incure snags.

I apologise for anyone thats been hit with the duty and can only say that for anyone ordering please be aware you MAY have to pay these charges.

I guess it started off life travelling by DHL then got picked up this end by TNT for its final leg to your front door?!

With regards to the HD wiring loom/relay, why would you need this given the halogen bulbs are 55w and these HID draw only 35w..? It even states on the box that they draw less power that std bulbs.

 

I agree, I think the way forward for the driving lights is to go without the relay on the HIDs

 

I'm going to try them without, if I start blowing fuses then I'll fit the HD relay kit.

As a warning for anyone doing this:
The oem wiring should be protected by the std fuse, so if you try this method, don't be tempted into fitting a bigger fuse into the standard loom. There could be a serious risk of meltdown/fire..!

Apparently there can be some huge power 'spikes' when the HID's are switched on.. So we will see..?

 

They take quite a bit of voltage (23,000volts iirc) to ignite, so maybe they pull a fair bit of current at that point. I'd put the relay in, the makers put it in there for a reason, and its not much hassle to fit, is it?

I got this kit before i saw the group buy. Never got a charge from tnt so it must be pot luck eh. Anyway what i was going to say was that the relay kit came included with my kit. Theres a thread in the electrical section talks about the spikes blowing 20A fuses which are normally 10A as standard....

Best not to melt anything for the sake of wiring a relay up, its only a few wires!!

 

The loom is fused at 20a for both sides, the oem wiring supply is 10a per side. Saying this the oem wiring is so puny I might just fit harness, however the oem wiring is unlikely to melt as the fuse would blow first.

The relay harness comes with the kit, and its only necessary on some cars only. It is an option.

Just another point, I quickly tried one side today (accessing ballast location etc) and the difference is staggering..! Even in daylight the HID made the GE +60% Megalight on the other side look like a candle..! Can't wait to fit them properly..

BTW found a nice location below the headlight unit where there is a 'shelf' in the cross member, almost as if it was made for it..! I'm thinking of using some very strong double sided pads to secure them as the location makes using the brackets unsuitable. The ballasts should get some nice cool air to ventilate them too..

 

jasonius, sounds like its play time at your place! Glad you're having fun with them!

If you can jerry-rig some sort of metal bracket for your ballasts rather than double sided pads, that'd be best as they do get hot and could melt off the tape and then its dangle dangle ballast which you dont want!

lol I know, i have some LED side lights in which although white, give off a very similar light colour to the HID's. You can just make them out in the top left and right.

The lights look even better in the flesh thought

 

I noticed those side lights - go really well with the main beam!

If you've now made all your non-Scooby friend jealous remember these HID's are also available for other makes of car!
