I'm 6'4 with size 12 shoes. I can't use my normal shoes properly but converse all stars or other shoes that aren't bulky should be fine. However a narrow body 7 might be a tight fit. Most westfields are wide bodied and slightly more space as with the caterham SV.

As a matter of interest, when using a donor car, what are the key components that keep the original viable as a registered car? What I'm trying to get at, is once you've taken the engine, gearbox, axel and various other bits, does the kit car then become the registered vehicle? I'm guessing an SVA / MOT is mandatory anyway? Can you register the new kit car with the donor number plate?

mine is registered with an age related plate but not the donor plate. apparently the local sva centre reissues new plates where cars are "rebuilt from parts" - that what the v5 says - remade from parts.

It gets tricky, I'm not entirely sure but you can only get a plate for the year of kit build if all components are new bar the drivetrain (IIRC engine, gearbox, diff), otherwise its a Q plate. Its something along those lines.
Either way I'm sure the donor car's plate is never used

OK - so been trawling the mags etc and still not come to a decision 
Kind of narrowed it down to a pre Aug 1998 Caterham or Westfield. So now the next big question, looking at what's on offer...

Why do the Caterhams seem to be so much more expensive for what seems to be a similar vehicle, am I missing some big difference between the two?

they are very similar (AFAIK), but caterham believe they have the "prestige" factor. i believe they also own the rights to the use of the "7" trade mark

best thing you could do now is get yourself over to a trade show and see what all the manufacturers are punting at the moment. you will get ideas on which parts of which cars you prefer - ie nose shape, wing/mudguards, engine type, engine manufacturer, engine size, windscreen/not, etc etc.
why not ask caterham and westfield if you can have a factory tour or a test drive? no idea whether they'd entertain this or not (you'd think they would though from a marketing perspective)

It's mainly about the heritage (apparantly) They both have their pros and cons, but are generally accepted as the two main runners in the Lotus 7 categories. If you want divided/honest/loyal opinion, there are many threads covering the merits on the Westfield forum, blatchat (Caterham forum) and also in the Kit Cars section on Pistonheads.
Don't forget to check out FindIt and Pistonheads for cars for sale
