Local Shell garage has now got V-Power, filled up today, 98.9 p/litre ... 5 p less than optimax 2 weeks ago!!!

It's 99 octane, apparently on asking why lose the hard won branding and publicity built up for Optimax they went to V-Power when it is only a little higher octane, she said Shell had been sued for use of the brand name Optimax as some other company had prior use of the name!!!
But it was a changed petrol not just a re-branding exercise.

As Pavlo said above, Tesco uses around 5% bio ethanol to raise octane and claim a better environmental performance ... haven't some Scoobies used a dash of methanol for the same effect for years..!

Lets see how it goes, due a remap very soon! ( for other reasoins - new turbo and injectors! ).

Evo has an article about V POWER and BP 102. According to Evo BP 102 gave a porsche 25 BHP more over 98 RON and 40 BHP when remapped to BP 102 RON.

Harvey

I didn't mean any offense, and have edited the post (think I'd been on the pop).

TBH I think the 3 weeks was a bit of an exaggeration also, probably more 1-2 weeks.

Fine. It was not possible to have the fuel available in all outlets for a specific date. Some garages are still using up Optimax.
Apparently the fuel was tried out in a particular distribution area well in advance of the announcement but NE England was amongst the last to be supplied. Apparently this included Jedburgh and Berwick on Tweed.

Shell at Willerby, Hull reckon its only been in their tanks for a week. Means mine got remapped on 98.6, quite happy to have a little safety margin.

Gone through a few tanks of the new V-power stuff, so plenty of time for the ECU to adjust, and have to say I am impressed.

Not only is the car pulling stronger than it did on Optimax, but it is running more smoothly. I notice it in particular when coming on boost - power delivery is noticeably improved. Definate slight improvement in mpg also.

I think I may try a test of using V-power without NF on a car mapped for Optimax + NF to see how it compares. This may aid those with imports on whether it would be safe to use v-power alone in these cars.

I filled up with V-Power last friday after getting very confused because the station still had Optimax posters up and there was no RON figure on the pumps.

Anyway I was away for the weekend driving all sorts of roads and mostly with a passenger, which I don't usually do (ie, more weight). I was getting below a quarter tank on the way home and noticed that I was approaching 250 miles. Usually I'm well below a quarter tank by 230 miles so I think the new fuel must have helped.

to be honest ive had enough of shell for the minute. when opti was 99.9 then fair enuf, but filled up with the new stuff last week at 103.9. my tesco garage 30 seconds away is 96.9 for their 99 stuff. put £15 in and somehow got 105 miles out of it and i wasnt hanging round. going to stick with that for a while and see how it goes.

Not without a remap, no. All JDM Imprezas manufactured from 1997 onwards are designed to run on 100RON fuel; and the STIs have a more aggressive bosst and ignition map. Different cars seem to tolerate differing fuels, well, differently.... You may be able to get away with it, but I wouldnt even consider trying without a Detalarm or a Knocklink. I suspect that as the boost ramps up itll light up like a Christmas tree (and no Pete; you couldnt hear that as you were driving, no matter how experienced you are!).

Ive been using V-power for about 2weeks now and have def noticed an improvement in MPG about 25-30more miles to a tank.

Also i dont know how long it will last but it is cheaper aswell! Maybe its just early marketing from Shell, itll probably be 107.9( as paid by muggins the other day in Ripley ) again soon
