I feel sorry for young ones growing up today with some many restrictions and yes it sometimes makes my job as a parent less fun, as I have to spend time explaining to two young lads why they cant do this or that !!
I have a healthy regard for safety, both being an adult (ish) and a parent and possess a modicum of common sense.
Bet the ones who were querying my reasons for the post or pointing out my foolish behaviour have never gone over the posted speed limit with other people in their car and generally return their library books on time....

to the moaners out there,
we could all lie in bed wrapped in cotton wool, but wheres the fun in that,
sure sum things are dangerous or involve a risk, all the things we like wehther kids or not, such as, climbing, canoeing, racing cars, bungee jumping, shootin each other wiv bows n arrows, buildin tree houses, shootin your mate wiv an air rifle, etc etc
but if you don't enjoy yourself in life u might as well be dead,
next someones gonna tell me that sniffing lighter fluid is dangerous amd that more people die from 1st time solvent abuse than heroin....as if

I can i just point out, what's the point in going to the beach if your not going to dry and dig the biggest hole in the world [within reason, JCB's are cheating].
Yes, it is tragic the little girl died, but that is the first instance i have heard of a child dying, digging a hole. compare that to the ratio of holes dug, i'm pretty sure statistics would show it was a freak accident.
And you always make sure the top has a bigger circumference than the bottom

Glad to see you and little'n was having a great time Swisscheese
It would be nice to see more parents having real fun with their kids rather than throwing them at their playstation or gameboy etc, then sitting back and whinging about bollocks like they have done on your thread...
Next time Id come along with my lad and dig a bigger one with you bud
The point others are not getting is, that you have good parents and bad parents.. If they are supervised then the child is safer cos the hole or whatever would be dug better, top wider than bottom etc etc etc
My point is,,, well done Chris for being a dad

If I remember the original thread - the problem wasn't the digging of the hole but the irresponsible action of leaving it there for someone to fall in !
All sounds prefectly reasonable to me .
Glad your kids enjoyed themselves and you tidied up once you'd finished .

I think you are missing the point Steve R, this isn't some macho competition to see who can build the biggest hole debate. Nor does it mean that just because I wouldn't let my kids play in a 5 foot hole, I must by definition put them in front of a telly all day!
There are many H+S issues which are just plain stupid, I just happen to think that this one is genuinely trying to avoid a tragedy, which although rare, can happen. Obviously you and swisstony would be able to dig out a child when a team of firefighters and lifeguards were unable to, but perhaps some of us are more realistic about our abilities should anything go wrong.

Leave H&S @ work. Theres a diference between being safe, and not letting children be children. would you let your child ride a bike? Im sure there is more chance of that killing them

Point is that we are all becoming H&S mad, or ‘they’ are trying to convert us into an ultra safe society.
A lot of what goes on is common sense, especially as covered in this stream of comments and observations.
Digging on the beach is great fun well it is once you get past the buried dog turds and bear cans.
Any one with a single brain cell would realise that if the kids or indeed the adults (which is probably more the case) are digging something so deep you have to use a ladder to get out of you may be in for a spot of bother. Tunnelling is also a big no-no,
Thankfully most people get bored once
a- They realise how much effort is involved
b- the beer wears off
c- They have eaten most of the pack up brought with them and the zed monster takes over.
d- The spade has broken and you wished you had spent the extra couple of quid on the metal one with the wooden handle.
What swisstony is saying is all about having fun, FUN which unfortunately is all too lost in today’s H&S mad world.
Dig holes in the sand, build speedboats, castles or what ever but most of all have fun , use your brain and stay safe.
When you have done fill them in or watch with pride as the sea reclaims them to nature.
Go home burnt like a lobster but most importantly feeling content at having spend the day entertaining / assisting your kids in building /digging the greatest feat of engineering possible.
let kids be kids

Taken from my another forum I visit.
Last weekend we went to woolacombe camping with board member mitchb and his family and mine.
was ok, weather wasnt great but we still found ourselves on the beach for the day on the saturday.
just behind us, a woman and guy was playing around in the sand, he was helping her dig a huge whole in the sand, he then got in the hole, and she buried him up to his head.
anyways about 5 minutes later, we hear her screaming "please, help me, please help me"
i looks round, and the guy is totally buried under the sand.
he had attempted to come out, but the sand behind his head had given way, and he had gone under with alot of sand piling on top of him.
me and a few others ran over, and frantically started digging the sand to get to him, there was **** loads on top.
id say it was about a minute before we managed to find his face, and drag him up.
one guy had to put his finger into his mouth and scoop out all the sand, so he could breathe again.
he spat alot of sand out, looked shooken up pretty bad, and then said "thankyou" lol.
that was scary stuff, i was expecting a death.
