Grahams right, I really do have a soft spot for those old cars and I couldn't afford one either but I'm sure they're a hoot for those that can....

You know I am only teasing yah!

I can't afford one either and would only ever buy one if I really had the money available - would never do it on finance just to have one

It is a love thing. Forget the head bit for sure.

Mine is worth about £12K, insured for that.
It is preety, goes well (yes, 230 bhp/tonne, more than my Sti v3 when stock) stops crap and is hard to drive in traffic (I'm getting old)

But out on the right road in the right company and the drive is great, and that is what the value here really is, FUN.

For the sensible:

Value £12K
Performance, about the same as an Sti v3
32 mpg, 36 trying on unleaded/orange juice or Optimax.
Fully comp insurance with agreed value, unlimited miles = £140
Has NEVER failed an MoT in 18 years.
Stands dormant in the garage for 4 months and starts first time on 6 cylinders

Bliss on sunny days.

Graham.

Helloooooo....

Great thread, thought I'd add some.

Firstly, Porsche's are the only luxury sports cars in the world that can reliably leave your garage in the morning, drive all the way across the continent, do a dozen laps on the Ring, drive all the way back, park up, go to bed, wake up and start first time.
Add to this the fact that Porsche's greatest global market, the USA, still uses AWFUL fuel, the cars are set up to run 95 ron and lower still.

Secondly, a Porsche owner putting NUL into his car is nothing to do with the fact that he can't afford SUL, but the main reason he's in a 911 to start with is because he's probably bloody good with his money! If he's spending the whole day driving in city, what's the point of SUL?

Thirdly, anyone who thinks Porsches are overpriced status icons and nothing else, you need a reality check. Get yourselves out and ask, beg, pray, steal whatever - get a test drive in a 911 - for any motoring enthusiast, it's a soul changing event. Honestly, 400 trillion Porsche owners can't be wrong!

Forthly, anyone who thinks Subaru's are tacky, useless chav mobiles who's only redeeming feature is an outdated rallying heritage, get out of those clouds. For sub 20k, there just is not a better road car for petrol heads.

Quick story.
I was out in my 60k GTR, tricked up with the latest technology from Japan, hand build mods from Nismo herself, doing a few gentle laps at the Ring. Yeah, look at me - I'm the don, I'm in a Skyline and nothing can touch me, all 530 of my 4 wheel driven horses, I'm king. And the BAM out of nowhere I swear to god, this GT3 overtakes me, in the wet, on the outside - and to add insult to injury, he leaves the biggest, fattest black lines I've ever seen. I'm quite simply gob-smacked.

I get home, put the girl up for sale and go to a Porsche dealer and test drive a GT3. Visceral, carnal, intense, vivid - these are the sensations I remember on my first drive. Getting back into my GTR was like switching from Dolby Digital to Mono. I put an order in for one the next day.

My RS was the greatest car I've ever driven. However, you would not believe the attention it got on the roads. I used to have Mk1 fiestas quite literally up my **** flashing me, egging me on to go faster. Traffic lights had Peugeot 405's revving their engines. Nova's playing musical chairs on the M25. Fact is, people want to see you driving fast and this is why you'll find most 911 drivers actually scared to do anything in fear of provoking the 'Senna' syndrome in many psycho drivers. Most of them are too sensible.

550 was the same, it's not just Porsches. People are desperate to see an exotic car cane it down the road. The second most GATSO photographed car in the UK is a Porsche.

Porsche have an incredible business model. They do not offer discount, floor mats are an optional extra and factory collection costs you £900.00.
They are the most profitable car company in the world. They've instilled desire in a product that filters through to every walk of life. Boxster, 911, Cayman, Cayenne, Panamera - they've diluted the brand to an extent where they no longer cater for the discerning individual aspiring to the 911. I hate Porsche for charging me £80.00 for floor mats. I hate the fact that the words "discount" are followed very closely by "Er, no sir". However this solid price fixing ensures relatively good residuals from what is essentially a crippled segment of the car market.

Additionally, to comment on the request for lightweight cars, this is just a fantasy. I went to the UK launch for the 997 GT3 and the Marketing Director explained interestingly the reasons for continued weight growth. Normally Porsche isn't about power, but the continued pressures from legislation by government and automotive bodies means extra weight. Things like air-bags, ABS, side impact bars, crumple zones, etc. etc. mean the cars are simply getting heavier. This means power needs to be increased to cope with the race as presented by other manufacturers. Mercedes have nearly 1000ft/lb engines in production class cars, but these cars weigh over 2 tonne.

My 997 GT3 arrives in Nov/Dec and for me, it's Porsche doing what they do best. No compromise, a single aim with Porsche hitting the target perfectly.

Here's a pic of me at Spa.

Here's some cockpit noise from my old carrera - taken with a standard video camera and it's in built mic - the engine noise is 'stock' :-)

Perhaps you can start to understand why girls don't like them!!

Please note no speed limits were exceeded during this clip....and I wasn't driving like a d*ck either!

P.S - great write up blow dog - you lucky booger!! P.S - when you going to take us all out for a spin??? (bad choice of word - a drive!)

We have more than 911 (as opposed to Porsche) lovers here, we are a competant band of journalists too!

The reason is we are telling the truth.

Since 1990 (when the restoration phase 1 finished) my 911 did 3000 miles a year till 2002, so I've done 36,000.
I had the Sti in 2002, and the 911 was retired, and in the last few years has barely turned a wheel, about 1000 miles.

Add to that though 12 hillclimb events each year, low miles but a severe thrashing .

So,

Car left standing for 2 weeks, drive to the track, thrash to death, drive back (except once, Shelsley Tree came out and hit me in the nose), park, repeat 12 times each year.
Add a few high days, a few Porsche Club do's.

Feature in a magazine, 8 Classic Car Shows at the NEC.

Two 'pay-for-a-ride-up-a-hillclimb charity days...what fun THAT was! Passenger rides up the hillclimb at full race speeds. One lady really was white at the top.

2 engine swops, a full engine rebuild by me (just so satisfying) and a right hand drive conversion by me too.

I have a lot of my life and soul in this 911.

Graham.

Nice thread.

I'd have to agree with the above, my car is now 16 years old, and has not been restored or anything like that, and has now done about 250-300 laps of the ring.

The last time I used it, it sat in the garage for 2 weeks, then drove 500 miles to the ring, did 40 laps (petrol bill was nearly £500!) on R Rated tyres, span twice and then drove me home at 120mph through Europe. The only maintenance it needed while there was a few litre of oil. No brake problems, no bonnet up in the car park........

This has been a great thread but unfortunately has really revived something I thought I'd put a lid on when I switched to the scoob - my desire for another classic 911...

Thanks guys -for NOTHING

(mmhmmhh..cross arms and hunches shoulders and scowls - just as he did when he was a boy and was refused ice cream!)

I agree with everything blow dog says - Porsche is an amazing car company and maybe it's a generation thing but although the GT3 is an amazing car for me they are too slick - the regs maybe the root of it - but like the rubber bumpers on the old mgb's they are just too modern and I really don't think I'd want one even if I could afford it - there are far too many other past classics on top of my shopping list before the 'plastic perfection' of a new 911 - it's almost too much car now ( if that doesn't sound silly...) - I love the ludicrously long throw 915 box with it's bus like whine, I love the lack of a 'moulded' all encompasing plastic centre console - all that open space down there!, the sharp metally snap of the doors when they close, the almost tractor like tickover, the ability to tinker around on my own in the engine bay, the slender lines and above all the nuts and bolts old school engineering. I'm really quite glad I can't plug a PC into one!!...I really do love the old cars...what a sucker!!

I guess I'm going to start fancying older women too but hey ho - you really do only live once!!!

You are doomed.
Just join the Porsche Club, open the monthly mag to Adverts and pick-up the phone.

They are all there to be taken at a good price (not cheap, but real).

Saw an RS 2.7 Touring (not a M471) for £98,000. That is 4 3.2 CS's (ok, 3...)

Bet your wife is suspicious now

Graham.

I will kill you tomorrow and make a short vid of mine so you can see and hear it, or you can pay me not to do it!!
You are so right about the design i now take for granted. The 'hollow' under dash and almost no trans tunnel is so so different to anything else.
Sorry if i have had anything to do with your 'revival', but i have never lost mine, the first love is the deepest maybe.

renew my membership you mean!!-- I've still got the old card in my wallet and a silver porsche keyring on my scooby...WAAHH!!!!...

re the video - That would be great Graham - I'd love to see and hear it in action...

my list of 'pros' is my wifes exact list of 'cons' and vice versa...what's turned out to really annoy me is that she almost never comes out or actually drives the scooby and yet 'it's my car' but she is really not amused at the idea of a change back to 911...how can you persevere against that kind of anti-logic ?

I just stopped off at specialist cars in malton for a mooch around - he's got a 2.7 RS for £99K!!!!...it's the most expensive pumpkin orange car I've ever seen - utterly immaculate but about £75K far too expensive for me!!...

Flynn,

are you local - I bought my 993 from Specialist Cars and sold it over the phone to someone in Devon!! Not something you can do with most other cars.

Specialist cars have amazing stock and look after some amazing cars, including the local Yellowbird, in fact it was for sale for relatively sensible money. Overall I think their prices are a bit high, but then people pay them!

Porsche Fantasy Land

If you fancy a go in a Spec C in anger come over to Elvington on Sept 2nd. It is a track day and I will be doing a few laps.

Just had a thought to take the debate in a different direction.

My three favourite cars of all time in terms of driver involvement and fun were all boxer engines.

Alfasud (wonderful car, brilliant chassis), Scoob and 911

What is it about boxer engines that add such special magic to a car?

Turbo's tend to muffle the bark of the engine, but to reveal the 'flat' magic you need to open the silencer.

My Sti v3 is decat (tut tut) 3'' with a big silencer.
It is 97 Db measured at the track. I usually win the unofficial 'Quietest Car of the Meeting' award. (What an angel...)

The 911 is open but can be capped. It runs 103 Db and is LOUD.
Take it down to the village high street and all it gets is ooohhh aaahhh what a lovely car (etc)
The flat 6 is a very special noise and so is the Impreza, but at speed the sound track of the 911 inside and out...who needs a stereo?

boxer engines are rare, are unique and are special; the Jowet was a flat 4, the VW Beetle of course, even the dreaded Chevy Corvair was a flat 6!

I think if they were simpler to produce the configuration would be more popular. You get a wide engine but a very low one, great for swoopy bonnets etc. The 911 benefits from dry sump lub only because of the shallow engine .

Graham.

I think 964s get a rough deal, yes there are dogs out there, but I think the internet propgates the rumours regarding these.

Sure they leak oil, but take a look at the mileage on some of these cars, 130k....they are probably ready for a top end rebuild anyway, with a headgasket.

The dual mass fly wheel, not a huge drama anymore.

I'd certainly get a 964 over a 3.2.

I agree with Davy.
The 964 is a whole new car with the G50 box, a good engine (when sorted) and great suspension.brakes.

Even looks good!
