PORSCHE COULDN'T BELEIVE IT!!!

without picking that Ring list apart in it's entirety it also demonstrates that the scooby is within a hairs whisker of a lot of VERY expensive machines....certainly not bad for a modern heavy production car within the financial reach of everyday ordinary folk...
As for bakerman & RB5 or anyone else thinking of a 911 - PLEASE forget the post 90's stuff - it's all fat heavy rich grey man's ego fodder - get a very well sorted pre '89 3.2 (or an early 2.7)- they are easily within budget of a scooby driver - preferably stripped out with carbon fibre panels from GT racing and with a recent rebuild or a very fit engine with ss headers, stiffened and lowered suspension and uprated calipers and nothing will get close to youon English B roads - I guarantee it!! - my carrera was after it's rebuild an easy 5.0 seconds 0-60 but it kept going equally as strong and as stable as a rock all the way to 160mph plus...and above 110mph would quickly put a prodrive STI in it's rear view mirror....and you'll still get 35mpg on a run and a years FC insurance for less than £500!!...
...but be warned your wives will HATE THEM WITH A PASSION RIVALLING THAT OF A MISTRESS!...they will just see 'old VERY NOISY car'....nothing else...
THAT's why the right people are no longer driving around in them anymore cos they have no 'keep up with the jones factor'
ask me how I know --- boo hoo....

I would love something like that.. I always just put anything non RS out of the picture, and RS's are just so dear.
Maybe I'll have to find a good one for a drive and see how that goes. would have to be pre 964 I'd agree, and no turbo bodykit which is difficult to come by.
4 spd 911 SC. mmm lovely.
on another note, not all that worried about track times on smooth circuits like hockenheim. Did anyone else notice how rubbish hirvonans focus looked on the quick bits of castle coomb at rallyday? not my style. The ring is more like a smooth wide tarmac stage

I'd avoid an SC - they need the hydraulic chain tensioners and were only 210 BHP...In fact generally avoid anything from 1976 to 1983
You need to drive one with a recent or very strong engine - they'll do 100K no bother and the dry sump deilvers oil under pressure to all bearings so no 'main bearing' starvation issue like the scooby is supposed to have...drive a tired one and you'll wonder what all the fuss is about..(pulled head studs is the nemesis of all 911's!! So if your doing a rebuild insist on racing spec studs)
Agree with the non-turbo - turbo wings just add drag and steal speed!...
A fresh carrera sport 3.2 puts out 235bhp but will easily give 245bhp with some nice ss headers...
One way forward - buy a £7K carrera with a reasonable engine and slightly tatty body but solid chassis - get a GOOD engine rebuild for £6K and strip out some of the fat and you've got a car actually better or equal to the '73 RS...you can get carbon fibre RS wings, bonnet, front & rear valence/bumber and ducktail from GT Racing for about £3-4K shipped!!...fitted and any other bits fixed and re-prayed with some lite suspension mods and brake tweaks will add another £5K
...so for £21K you've probably got a mint '84 3.2 that looks like an '73 RS and is good for another 100K miles! - weighs about 950kg and gives about 257BHP per tonne!
Basically nothing - not even a '73 RS will be able to catch you...

Bloody hell, and i thought I was a 911 man!
Base spec:
1973 Touring 911 (lightest bar the RS's)
3.2 /915 5 speed (have a mag cased 4 speeder as a spare)
Bob Watson chipped to 230 bhp real off his RR.(on unleaded )
2.7 small tube headers and 'rally' 3 pipe silencer. No heater.
Turbo 3 liter bars on the rear, stock at the front.
Alloy rear arms, plastic bushes.
2.7 RS anti roll bars through the body front/rear.
Custom valved Bilsteins all round (mega )
Stock brakes.
All sound proofing out, lightweight bucket seats in, skimpy carpets
6 point roll cage
7'' x 15's with the best road tyres ever for the 911, Bridgestone SO2 PP's, 185 fr/ 205 rr to keep that steering. Momo wheel (so nice, now all the craze)
Turbo tie rods and bump steer spacers.
Bob Watson alignment.
Glass race weight bonnet/front spoiler
RHD conversion by me!
Just so bloody fast on the road across country on your own.
But this replica is nice too:
and this one:

Audi: It is a full-on hill climb car and the tracks are very smooth, and the suspension mega stiff.
The feed to the waste gate is under vacuum (spel) and the pipe will not deform.
I will ignore the service remark.....
RB5: It is very quiet oddly, but just so fast.

That's a seriously nice 911 Graham - a 3.2 in the '73 bodyshell must be close to giving you 230bhp per tonne -
Want to swap it for a WRX300 ??
surely having three 911 contravene's some kind of international law of decency....but having two scoobies and two 911's seem's more 'balanced'...
I used to buy all my bits from here - if there's anything about porsches worth knowing it'll be on here somewhere...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/forum...p?s=&forumid=3
plus wayne dempsey's 911 engine rebuild is without doubt the finest single piece of mechanical literature I've EVER read...I could seriously rebuild a 911 engine using one..
my 'getting back into the 911' pressure valve is seriously close to bursting - It's something I have to keep a lid on at the best of times but this thread is making me crazy!!..

I might have unintensionally mis-led you.
The yellow one is mine since 1988. Gave up American Hot Rods for it.
The white '2.7 RS' is a hill climber, typical of hillclimb 911's.(not mine!)
The silver one used to belong to a hillclimber but 'retired' it about 3 years ago. Now a circuit.trackday basher.
I have my 407 bhp Impreza as the 911 was simply not fast enough in the class when saloons and sports cars were grouped together.
As to the 911 itch re-emerging; boy do i ever know what you mean. It always gets me about this time of year, summer, slow days and somewhere to go to at the weekend.
Might even go to the posh Porsche Club do over the bank hols...or Donnington!
Such a special event actually going some distance rather than a quick 20 minute solo blat.
The whole persona of it, the go, the smells and the sheer driving thrill and the exhaust (open of course) ticks quickly as it comes to rest and cools down abruptly.
If only the 915 box was good. The throw of the lever is almost laughable, and the works quick-shift I tried was awful. Maybe I need to re-bush and re-UJ the linkage again.
The paint is not the best (home sprayed in a single garage), but it has honest battle scars of hillclimbs (inc a big tree hitting off at Shelsley Walsh) and several dings and stone chips, so this is a driver not a poser.(not too sure about the driver!).
glad it has created a little interest ans for you revived some memories.
You would die to see the photo albums of the car over the last 18 years...

Yes, I think the character of them is the fascination not the outright performance...
I am fortuanate enough to live in an area with miles of empty b roads and doing them in the scooby is a bit like 'let's see how quick you can get from a to b' -when it's all over you say 'wow - 2m 31 seconds' - doing them in the porsche - when it's all over you sit there and slowly uncurl your fingers from the wheel, look around the car and let out a huge 'phew' of relief and then realise you can actually hear your heart beating over the noise of the engine..
It's no joke when they say the old 911's are not for everyone..
I'm looking at the 'gratuitous phot thread' on the pelican forum and thinking - 'what have I done'!!

Just as a point of order on earlier posts...
...my Spec C puts out 342bhp on Maha rollers and 330bhp on Dyno Dynamics. It has a sports cat exhaust, end of.
...the 'Ring times list misses the 2005 Spec C RA Limited that did a 7'59" run - unless that is what they have listed as prototype. As Subaru's ambition was to get a production car under 8 minutes it was a production car they ran on production tyres. Edited to add that if you search the torrents there is an in car video of it being done
...finally, whilst I can wholeheartedly agree with flynn's rage against weight, I suspect he has indeed not been in a GT3 which is not sanitised. As standard it has a roll cage, race seats, light weight components and the only way a fat cat could get in it would be with a six months in isolation on water only and the only way he would find the engine noise subdued would be to have his eardrums punched out.
It is different to earlier cars - but hey if Concorde had been developed it would be a different plane now. It's called progress!!

Agree, but when you 'only' have a golden oldie you do tend to romance a bit; I'm sure you understand.
It would be great to try a GT3, and frustrating too.
Even the wife (known to be a bit petrol headed) would dump the Impreza and the 911T for a 'GT3' esc 911 to enjoy and for me to hillclimb.
Just need a little lottery win then!
Quite fancy a C2 RS as it is almost a hillclimber out of the box, but now 25K+

I'd say a 964 RS is £30k+ now for a LHD one.
.....and that would get me around the ring about the same speed I can do now. I know the experience would be massive, but £20K to go the same speed, be a worse road car, not carry 4 wheels and tyres, not have AC, not be a great continent cruiser.....well it goes without saying.......I'd buy one tomorrow if I had the cash spare!
