Yank '92' is measured in pon, not ron so is actually closer to 94-95 ron.
Anyway, I don't think they're snobbish just because they don't want to race. I don't bother with astras/nova's/ctrs or any of that because I'm not inquisative as to how my car performs against one. same goes the other way I'm sure.

IMO anyone who drives a lambo/porshe/ferrari and boots it away from the lights is ***. There is absolutely no point. These cars are not just designed to be driven hard. They are there to be admired and drooled after also. These cars cost the earth because of the badge.
I work in notts and regularly see a yellow Gallardo driving about around Hucknall. An everyday "tesco" supercar if ever there was one. And he doesn't drive like a *** either, which is good cos all us normo's wouldn't get to see it much otherwise :-)
You cant say in breath I dont drive like a *** but expect supercar owners to do so.
Grow up

If you can afford to buy a £100k+ motor you just don't worry about something like depreciation. The cost is insignificant ... just like fuel!
bear in mind that in order to comfortably afford to buy something like a 997 outright and live a comfortable life in a nice part of the country you will need to be earning circa £150k per year!

well worth the spend out though. Drove a new 997 turbo 2 days after an F430 and it completely trounced the fezza in everyway apart from sound! The 18000 mile service interval is mental considering how complex and advanced the porka engine is.
Best supercar available atm IMO.

Well, we have the lot now on this subject!
911 drivers are rich old middle aged snobs who never use the cars, in matching uniforms, but some blast The Ring for ages (which they certainly do, AND then drive home to their £150K jobs.)
My maths were based on my 2 litre which might hit 400 bhp on a certain RR day (407 to be true) and that is about 200 bhp a litre, but on Optimax.NF and the demon AndyF touch.
Drag racing from traffic lights is for boy racers and is possibly dangerous as most light by me are in built-up areas?
The 911 I have is old.
It cost me £3K and has had 3 engines to 'go faster'
The 997 is from a different solar system in comparison as it should be, and the price reflects the engineering, image, and residual values the car enjoys.
Other than the specialist Impreza's (22B etc) name one Impreza that matches the above.
25K to buy, a plunging image(?), and poor depreciation.
Can you justify the cost of a 997/GT3 etc? too true if that is what you want, have worked for and waited till you are old enough to afford one why not? Not many get one on a plate.
If your boss has one and you resent it, go and start a company and get where he is!
Graham.

I now **** myself with laughter every time I hear an impreza driver say that they 'beat' or 'kept-up' with a 911 in order to make out that is is in someway not a sensational car and on par with a subaru.

I'd bet on my Classic keeping up with, if not beating my mates' 996 and Bentley continental to 100.
Do I therefore think my car is in the same league as theirs?
Not a chance!!
Rice rockets are about reliable and practical "bang for ya buck" and to hell with anything else!

PS Both of the above mates love the Scooby to bits- they just say -quite rightly- that they couldn't exactly use it to take execs to board meetings!
I'm quite keen on their cars too!

We both pulled up at lights next to a 911 Carrera, totally disinterested, i'd just once like to actually see what these cars are capable of even if they smoke me completely and make my pride and joy look like a kids toy. Had it been a Supra/Evo/M3/Skyline theres no doubt we'd have had some fun on some quiet roads on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Yet most Porsche owners seem to think they are "above" everyone else.
Here we have the basis of 94impreza's argument, because a Porsche didn't feel the need to race a spotty chav in an Impreza, he obviously thinks he is above everyone else?
What a f*cking stupid assumption! I've lost count of the number of times I've p*ssed myself, as inferior cars fly away from the lights while I slowly pull away in my Impreza laughing at how stupid they look.

MY2000 Integra Type R. Ran like a bag of nails on NUL, rough, noisy and thirsty. On SUL, was smooth, quieter, more responsive (as you'd expect) and more fuel efficient.
Citroen C2GT - don't laugh - smoother and measurably more fuel efficient on SUL. Enough to compensate for the price difference.
It stands to reason - on the cars in question SUL will allow more ignition advance, hence smoother and more efficient running. Why the Honda was noisier on NUL I have no idea.
So whilst the 318i doesn't need SUL, it may not be as daft an idea as it first appears.

I find it interesting that the '911' is always the car in the cross hair of (any) other car at the lights.
The whole scenario makes me cringe with embarrasment.
The 911 is a car for so many people.
A cruiser, a 'Ring basher, a mid-life treat, a realisation of a school boy dream, bait for other fab cars/drivers/heros.
Why not a TVR?
Ferrari?
Noble?
Audi RS4 V8 (cheaper!)
The fact that the iconic 911 is on so many peoples list, right at the top, must say how good it is as most want to shoot it down.
It represents so much to so many.
I've really enjoyed mine for 18 years, all blood sweat and tears and great memories, doubt my Sti will leave such a mark on me.
Here I am, a company director, over 50, good salary, no Porsche uniform, in the Old Banger: Meet some people's perception?
And today:
And when the 911 bites back...
Hero pictures, yes of course, but doing the real thing and not pratting about at traffic lights...
Graham.

Mind the 911 perception rings true for current cars. Any idiot can drive them (just like the impreza...funny that, as many drive them too).
The old ones need a bit more **** clenching, a much stronger clutch foot and some arm muscles, seeing that steering isn't a task capeable of being done by your little pinky finger - unless you want it dislocated (as opposed to the limp wisted efforts needed to steer an Impreza, or new age 911 ).
And old school owners won't get **** about gaining whopping 10bhp by running a different fuel. They just get on with more important things: Like driving the thing
Shark Man ~ When do you chnage the coolant? What coolant?

Well, this 'I beat a 911' thing is all 'Top Gear' to me.
The 911 is a 1973 classic with a 240 bhp 3.2 engine, chipped, 32 mpg and weighs 1010Kg.
Crap in a staight line 'drag' due to the gearbox (so long and slow!), but get it over 30 mph and a good A road with a 200 mile run ahead of you on a bright crisp sunday and the world become a mist of magic.
It has open exhausts and the flat 6 is purity to any real petrol head.
It has held its value for 12 years now, costs £147 fully comp to insure too...
The Impreza is a real hot-shot. Ballistic on the road and track, crap fuel consumption killer road houlding and even comfortable too (in a semi race kind of way)
My mum loves them both, my petrol head daught expects to inherit them bith and my wife sort of likes them...I tend to drive the 911 on my own.
for fun and to annoy some of you:

I think Shark Man fully understands these cars.

Why Bother?
I couldn't be assed to go through the chest poking on the other 2 pages.....
If the guy in the porker didn't want to race, so what?!
I myself, take great pleasure in baiting **** box Novas, Saxos etc. I let them think they have a race on, by revving, nudging etc, then just trundle away as they f**k off in a cloud of tyre smoke and make a complete c#ck of themselves.

I even drove an old 912 last week, dispite being a poor 911 dogged with a 1.6 4pot 356 engine, it still managed to put a big grin on my face!

I see loads of cars that blatently ain't turbo'd or sporty putting in optimax, yeah you may feel lke a tit putting it in a 1.0l nova, but it does help with extra mpg
and it makes your small engine/bhp car faster (apparently, when I asked my m8)

lovely 911 Graham - I'm very jealous!!....
All this talk has really got me wet for another - I just put the idea very tentatively to my wife - her exact words 'If you do that I'd be VERY upset' - she looked like she really meant it...
Why is it wives are ok with scoobies but totally flip out over a classic stripped out 911 ???
BOO HOO!!!....

The newer ones that are heavier and need power assistance just are not as good IMHO. I cannot comment on the latest RS though which is supposed to be very special.
Most Impreza owners would be shocked by proper steering feel.
You are right about the clutch muscles though

Surely one of the great joys of the earlier, lighter 911s is that the steering is so beautifully light, yet unassisted. Early 911s must be one of the greatest steering cars ever.
Supersport and Turbo is the heaviest from what I recall. Also it varied if you had a full tank or not (90litres plus 10 reserve = close to 100kg on the front axle). Tyres gave interesting differences in feedback, a pair of well scrubbed Dunlop D40s gave very agressive feedback, whilst swapping to SP9000s would make it much softer.
~ Blower by the steering, Heater by the handbrake, A/C on top of the tape rack (only if your a flash git)

Yep!
That's why i said 'over 30 mph...'
The wheel moves gently in your hands as it tracks every contour.
With no engine weight over the front axle turn-in is magic, the chassis flow is like GTX (got to keep it in period!) good and hot, and the 'hum' through the stiff chassis on custom valved Bilteins and Turbo torsion bars is dreamy.
When it comes to the 4 wheel un-servo'd disc brakes, a good leg is needed but they are just so progressive and full od touch and ultimatly bite!
Real cars and full to brimming with true character and spirit, bit like....can't really think of anything else.
