The motorcyclist, a 50-year-old man from Fareham, was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he later died.

The driver of the BMW, a 49-year-old man, was uninjured. Police are appealing for anyone who saw the crash on Wednesday afternoon to contact them.

Former England football star Paul Gascoigne has been involved in a road accident in his home town of Gateshead.

The 36-year-old former Newcastle and Glasgow Rangers player, was driving a four-wheel drive BMW, when the incident happened in the Dunston area of the town on Thursday.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said Gascoigne, who recently turned out for a benefit match for struggling Darlington, was not seriously injured.

He said: "We can confirm footballer Paul Gascoigne was involved in a minor traffic collision this afternoon at 1548 GMT on Thursday.

"He was driving a BMW X5 car westbound on Wellington Road in Dunston, in Gateshead."

Two men have been treated in hospital after being attacked by a group of men in Northampton on Tuesday morning.

The incident happened in Bostock Avenue after an argument between the two men who were in a delivery van and the occupants of a black BMW X5 vehicle.

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney faces a charge of driving without due care and attention after an accident at a shopping centre.

The 19-year-old England striker's BMW X5 was in collision with a Nissan Primera driven by a 45-year-old woman.

Police are appealing for a woman who crashed her BMW car into a block of flats and drove off, to come forward.

The accident happened at Richard Reynolds Court on Dean Lane, Cadished, Gtr Manchester, on Monday afternoon.

A witness said the woman got out of the car, examined the damage and made a call on her mobile before driving off.

The vehicle she was driving is thought to be a BMW X5.

Two men in their mid-20s threatened a Securicor guard with a handgun as he delivered money to a cash point at the Jet garage on Doncaster Road.

They escaped in a waiting silver bmw, which they abandoned at the Ferryboat pub before switching to a BMW X5.

Dude,

I don't have an SUV

I drive a car with both dodgy looks and image

(although I've driven plenty and the wifes next car will be an X3/X5 or similar and yes, looks will play a part, as they do for most people when looking at cars )

The point is that 'drive' is subjective. You can enjoy the drive in 5 or enjoy a the drive in a X5. You've driven one and didn't like it, I drive one and do.
ok, you could argue that the 5 has better steering precision, less roll etc...but unless these are things that make a difference in your everyday use of the car, who cares?

anyhow, you had one as a loner, implying that you have a BMW, 5 series most likely. Well I'm afraid that makes you just as much of a tosser as me

The current X5 does NOT offer a better drive than the current 5, if you think it does then you like presumably like body roll and less precision in a car. Most people woundn't agree. The ride height does affect handling because while it's still very good for an SUV it's inferior to the 5.

The ride height argument I can sort of understand, until you actually use one in the environment most owners are in. Driving one through the city centre in traffic the only advantage it conferred was to see across a few cars to the next SUV/VAN/Truck or bus. More or less useless.
Where I did find it useful was on country lanes where I could see further and over hedgerows. I submit that as few owners will spend their lives driving these roads the argument is a niche one at best.
Why they really like the increased ride height is that these people are just like short arsed blokes, inadequate in themselves with something to prove so they like to sit up higher in some kind of attempt to give themselves the psychological boost they so clearly need.

Most of these cars are purchased as trinkets and status symbols and as I've said before if you bought an X5 for this reason you fcuked up bigtime. The only SUV with any scumbag new money cachet is a Cayenne Turbo. All the X5 says is 'new build estate house, Harvester, holiday with Sandals and bleach blonde wife in a velour leisure suit'.

One poster mentioned that he'd like to buy one to annoy others, frankly I don't think that the X5 and it's demographic annoys other people as much as gives them a good target to despise.

People are perfectly free to choose them just as other people are perfectly free to stereotype said owners. JUST LIKE ANY OTHER CAR.
Fair points Rabid.

But that doesn't make them bad. For you, the negative image they have is clearly of great importance. For me that doesn't matter. I live on the west coast of Scotland, where hedgerows and walls are the norm, not the exception. Where the lofty driving position is relaxed and safe, not because of any phsycological problems tha driver has. Where the world doesn't grind to a halt when it snows an inch of snow. Christ, when it rains heavily anywhere near the M25 London stops.

Just as many tosser footballers and celebrity wannabees drive Astons, 997s, Ferraris and the like. So by your own argument that would be grounds to stay clear of those cars too. God knows how many tossers I've seen in Evos and Imprezas recently.

Of course the X5 doesn't handle like a 5 series. The laws of physics dictate that. But its pretty good for an SUV.

And as for all the arguments about them being crap off road, if you consider that the vast majority of "proper" 4 x 4 s never do more than fields and gravel (if that) then so ******* what???

**** lover drives an s40. Shark Man hasn't said yet. Wonder why?

I used to have an E90 lease car the difference is that you seem to believe your car's image has some relevance to you "that makes you just as much of a tosser as me".

When I drove an E90 I was well aware that people would most probably stereotype thus, "look at that guy, ******* sh1tty rep in his debadged 3 series".

Unlike you though I wasn't in denial that people would have that perception.

I for one am not saying X5 drivers are all tossers, what I am saying is that is the general perception.

I'd also refer you to your post where you said the "better driving experience and feel..........no". This isn't true unless by driving experience you mean something different to the norm.

I can well understand why someone might want an X5 for a mixture of country lane driving, towing and and snowy conditions.
What I have a problem understanding is why anyone would want one for it's 'normal' road/city driving ability or image, both of which are much worse than a 5.

I'm not image obsessed I'm merely commenting on the image the X5 has. If I was obsessed with such things I'd hardly have driven an E90, Subaru, Porsche or any of the other 'tossers' cars I've owned...............

I was actually getting at the Stereotype of all BMW drivers, and it's Stereotypes that you are very keen to talk about. No more to it than that I'm afraid.

I am well aware of the general perception of BMW drivers, and I truley don't care what image I portray driving one. You prefer the 5 series and I prefer the X5.

<draws breath>

NSX, XJ-S, Land Rover 88" V8, Celica 190, Impreza Turbo, 325 touring and a 528. The latter two are somewhat of an embarrasment (5 series with no guts and a Poor man's 5 series touring )

Spec for spec the 5 steers better, brakes better, accelerates better and handles transitions better. By better I mean subjectively and objectively over most increments.
These are things most people mean by 'better drive'.

If you agree with the perception of BMW drivers then you presumably accept that the X5 image is the worst of the lot? Transcending mere BMW stereotyping and plumbing new depths of negative w@nkerdom.

This is just going round & round in circles now. If someone want's to buy an X5 so be it, let them. If you don't like them, great, keep it to yourself. Why have a go at someone for wanting a particular car? If we all drove the same car, the world would still just have the `Ford model T`.
Choice is what we have as humans. It's a free country we live in, and everybody has a right to choose whatever the hell the like to buy and drive around in.

As you forcefully mentioned earlier, these are mere stereotypes and I find it very easy to accept the reality that stereotyping exists.

..........and by the same token people are free in that 'free country' to have opinions about others based on their actions. People draw conclusions based on what others wear, what they drive, what they type on some crappy BBS , etc etc etc.

What I find amazing is that on threads like these we get X5 owners coming out of the woodwork and making statments like

"A 5 series is not better in every way.............

better driving experience and feel..........no"

When the X5 clearly doesn't offer more 'feel' or a better driving experience (unless body roll and vaguer steering, worse acceleration etc are 'better').

Then they go on to defend why they chose that particular vehicle as if they feel under threat somehow. A basic understanding of human nature tells you they do this because deep down they know the stereotype is true and worse that it probably applies to them.

So...let me get this straight.

1)We all agree (well most of us) that a 5 series handles better than an X5. Fair enough.

2)Its clear that most of those of us on this thread commenting in favour of the X5 (and cars like it) actually live and work in an environment where the advantages of the size, height and 4wd actually serve a genuine purpose.

3)Its clear that most of those on this thread criticising the X5 (and cars like it) have never driven one, let alone lived with one for any length of time and who's entire experience centers around having to sit behind one on the school run. Yes, they have more money than you - get over it

4)Believe it or not, for most people who buy them, big SUV's are, simply, more fun to drive and live with 90% of the time.

5)Rabid is a stereotypical tosser (judging by the car's he has had)

6)I, and people like me, don't give a rats **** what (and I think its fair to say all bar one or two of those posting on this thread agree with this sentiment) intellectually and sexually challenged w@nkers (by his own admission) like AudiLover think and will continue to choose whatever cars we want for whatever reasons we have.

7)It is, however, entertaining to watch them try and put together any sort of conclusive argument

and finally

7)Brendan, once again, demonstrates his uncanny ability to type the right thing at the right time

1. Most cars for similiar money to the X5 do.

2. What advantage did you say the X5 has? The 5er has MORE interior space, infact alot of cars do, height I will give you, but 4WD No one buys a BMW for its 4WD. It might aswell not have 4WD seeing as how **** it is. Buying into gimmicks there.

3. X5's arent even that expensive so what has money got to do with, dont see threads of people saying that 911's are pointless or RS6's.

4. Theyre probably scared ****less driving day to day as theyre incompetent and need a big brash SUV to feel safe, and because it serves the purpose of a ***** extension. X5 drivers are *****.

5. Your a feckin tosser.

6. You dont give a toss? So why are you getting all huffed up because I called the X5 pointless, and carried on posting 3 pages later?

7. I dont give a **** if you want to buy a X5. I just love ripping into people who come up with a load of bullshgit as to why they brought them. If theyre honest and say, I got it for the image I can live with that, I know plenty of people that do, and why do you think young drug dealers and gangsters love the X5? Its not because of driver excitement you ****.

7 (again? you cant count can you, ****in dimwitt) Asslicking him because hes defending your manhood? (X5)
