Best security is the unknown ones. Once popular, thieves find it worthwhile figuring a way around it.
Basically, if everyones getting device X then it's not gonna be good for long
Lock the car, alarm it, don't leave valuables on display etc. Do what you can but you aren't gonna stop the pro thief. That's why you have insurance. Claim and get another car.

Well I got a call from Trackstar yesterday, the cheeky little ******* have been using the SIM card from the tracker to make calls on a mobile! So we will have to see if they have called any numbers that are traceable, in which case apparently the police will take action.
johnfelstead - I agree the security is basically there to stop cars without passes getting in. However the WR1 was parked approx 100m from the booth, I simply don't believe he didn't hear anything when they broke the window (at which point the alarm must have gone off). In the time the car was taken between 4pm and 5pm testing had finished so things were pretty quiet. And guess what the same lazy .... wouldn't let me in on Saturday morning even though he knew already my Pit/Paddock pass had been stolen with the car. He made me wait half an hour whilst someone went and got me one - to say I was not particularly impressed would be a masterpiece of understatement.
Which brings me on to:-
tmo - Yes this was the word going round the paddock, apparently several high value/performance cars have gone missing from Donington recently. I was told in the last 10 days a brand new Porsche went missing as well. One of our engineers who has been around a long time and knows 'everybody' heard that the rumour is someone there is doing exactly that.
Ironically he also heard that the circuit managers were annoyed that I had posted about my loss on the internet in case it hurt ticket sales!
Daz1121 - No I don't race myself, I have accidentally found myself managing the UK's youngest single seat racing driver (when he raced for the first time at Brands in March he was only 15 1/2 and had only ever competed at 7 MSA kart meetings prior to that!). He races in the Formula BMW UK Championship, so races against the likes of Nigel Mansell's two sons Leo and Greg. If you want to know more take a look at http://wwwtomdunstan.co.uk
Will keep everyone updated when there is more news re the car theft.
Kind regards,
Robin

Absolutely gutted for you Robin
Just out of interest what are Trackstar saying about it ? , Is there any sort of comeback with them as the system failed to do what it's supposed to.
Hope you get sorted out

Trackstar are saying the tracker must have been disabled before the car was moved as they did not receive any signal at all from it.
They take no responsibility.......
I will be writing a letter as it seems faintly ridiculous that they only had to remove one piece of trim to get at it. This means they must have had a pretty good idea where it would be which surely defeats the object of the exercise!
Otherwise no further news. Got a meeting with the loss adjuster on Monday morning so fingers crossed.
Kind regards,
Robin

Robin, hope you can get a good agreed payout from the loss adjuster and they give you the type of value back for the true replacement value of the car from a main dealer.
Have heard of Trackers being bypassed and deactivated before. The insurance companies still payout but take the matter further with the tracker supplier and installation company.

I sort of agree with you but the tracker doesn't really make the car harder to steal it is supposed to help the plod catch the crooks and retrieve the car quickly ie before its stripped or out of the country in a container.
I bet there isn't a car on the planet thieves couldn't take if they wanted it.
Cat 1 alarm/immobilisers are supposed to stop them....NOT!
Nik.

silly question but where is the HT lead on an STI, I am getting one in sept, and i often go to tracks and other places where this seems to happen, is it still possible to remove the HT lead on modern cars, i'd like to see the thief that carries one with him.

As the 'victim' in this case I have to be honest and say even in the future I really can't see myself scrabbling around in the engine bay to remove the HT lead or similar whenever I park up (at a circuit or anywhere else). In real life it just wouldn't be practical - lots of my friends thought I was obsessive as I always ask is their 'safe' parking whenever we go anywhere - if I started doing this in the future they would probably call for the men in white coats!
Still no further news to report about the car.
Kind regards,
Robin

really sorry to hear about this
Nice to know that what you are paying for works then - next time ask them for an empty box and just burn the money

Just been on to the police and Trackstar - no news from either.
The police have not seen the car since aborting the pursuit in Warwickshire.
Trackstar have just said they did not receive a signal from the car and still have not done. When I queried how this was possible, the disinterested @@@@ in their Customer Service department said 'lots of theives know how to disable them'. Gives you confidence eh?
As for the immobiliser etc.,.. I guess the same applies......
The car was parked little more than 100m from the security gate, yet the fat lazy @@@@ in a hi viz jacket claimed he didn't see or hear a thing - I bet he would be the first to give me a hard time if there was the slightest thing wrong with any of my passes! <rant over>
Will keep you informed.
Kind regards,
Robin

My insurance company didnt pay out coz the keys were in the car I dont like to name and shame, but I think most insurers adopt that policy... if anything like this happens to anyone else remember, the keys werent in the car, they were in your pocket and the thugs mugged them off you - then you're insured!
If people bothered to read their proposal/policy wording in most cases it states that people should take reasonable care to safeguard their property, and the primary responsibility rests with the policyholder.
Anyone that gets out of the car when two strangers arrrive to road test it and leaves the keys in with it running is, to be honest, not awfully intelligent and has just fallen for the oldest trick in the book. Why should the insurer have to pay for their stupidity/lack of responsibility?
IMHO
And what you are suggesting re the mugging is fraud.
Note: this is not criticising Robin in any way

Sounds like this is a major flaw in tracker surely if the alarm goes off it should send a signal they could then phone the owner to check if it is a false alarm or not. This might then improve the chances of catching them
assuming they don't have a phone jammer
the alternative might be to fit a modified version of the smokecloak http://www.smokecloak.com/splash/

Yes I do having just had a pax ride in it - he got it back though.
Prob about Trackstars is that they are not connected to the alarm. It is something easy to do and there are enough things around now that you can make it done.
Also PTMW! had one and after the engine blew @ Brands in 2003, I was recovered to SS in Basildon. It took until the A13 before I got a phone call to say that something was wrong - that was 45 minutes and 20 miles...
