Great for when your in the mood, but on the daily slog I drive a powerful engined car to avoid having to do this. And before I continue; don't even utter the word automatic, as I hate them equally as much as a torqueless engine.
I must have been spoilt in my early years and silly as it sounds, I used drive a XR3 that, thanks to the weight, short final drive ratio and well sorted engine, could literally pull happily and cleanly in any gear at any revs and any speed - 5th from 30mph onwards was no problem and made the car a joy in the slow slog to work every day and I could just dump into 3rd or 4th in the city and not have to bother shifting all the time. Now don't think buy a diesel now, As I'm not finished......As when I am in the mood to drive fast and have some fun, I could use each gear to the full advantage and wring its neck, and the thing would fly about the lanes with me grinning like a Cheshire cat.
I could harp back to classic sports cars in which this trait was equally as strong - TR6, E-Type, GT6 or even a v6 capri TVR 500. All much slower cars, but all have more get up and go in any gear at any engine speed. Just as well as the gearbox on the jags were a pig
Its this flexilbilty cars lack these days, yes I can adapt, yes I can use it as its intended and shift gears all the time to suit the narrow peaky top end powerband, but being constantly aware of which gear is needed for the situation when your not in the mood and having to keep the revs sky high with a buzzing engine howling away when you just want to do is relax and cruise completely detracts from the driving experience.
Its a personal opinon, so forgive me for quaking on and trying to make it understood that I can't live with such vehicle dynamics. I don't like this compromise, which gives me a hard time find the perfect car. I driven such cars before thinking I'll adapt, and I loved them at first. But then the novelty of such peak power performance wore off, when I found I couldn't do things that I could do in tarted up 1990's shopping trolley.
