I am on my 4th one, hypercar performance (on the top models) for 1/10th the price. Everyone will point and look at it and it really will hold its value. I have never lost more than 1500 a year in depreciation on a Caterham.
40k will get you the top spec CSR260. But TBH the CSR 260 has too much power for the road, so save 10k and get the CSR200, its just as fast on the road and you will be able to use all the power.
Get yourself along to a local Caterham meeting - PM me if you want info on your local meet. You will get to meet some mad and very friendly people and I guarantee it will be a life changing experience and you will wonder how you lived without a) the car and b) the friends you will make through the local club.
On a final note Caterham are doing 0% finance right now so you could put your money in ING for a couple of years and the interest will pay for your depreciation.
If you want more info PM me.

I have actually made money on one of my cars, I bought it in the winter when prices are a bit lower and sold the following summer and made 1k.

Has to be a Jap car, so I'd go for an NSX Type R, as rare as rocking horse ****. I toyed with gettng a Porsche before I bought the STI but the other half said she would leave me if I did. I'm gald I didn't as when I went to Le Mans everyone that drove one was either very fat, or very old and fat. But hey buy what you want mate, its your cash

Fastback, Coupe or Convertible, I'm not fussy So long as there is sorted a small block V8 under the hood, and four on the floor

Wish I made money on cars I had sold

You should expect to lose approx 1500 a year on a Caterham, and once you get down to about 10k thats the base line for even the oldest cars.

Saying all that a few years ago you could buy a superlight r and sell it a year later with hardly any loss....good old days

£40K car for life
Personally I'd go for a 1972 Aston Martin DBS V8, I'd have change to get it into top running order and I'd keep it and pass it on to my kids (if I ever have any). Same age as me - hence the year, would love a Ferrari Daytona Spyder but £40K doesn't get that far.
A friend of mine has a similar idea for a 1973 Porsche Carrera.
Trouble is if your £40K is all your allowed ever and you get a moden car, there's always one a bit better round the corner. Go older and you can chill out and enjoy it.
OK so both of the above are down on dynamics, but they both hit 60 in under 6 seconds and you don't see yourself coming the other way. Plus you can have a lot of fun at legal speeds. Sadly a Scoob friend of mine, may be up for a ban soon
Oh and I have driven an older Aston but not the DBS, but thats not the point - this is a dream car thread.
In the meantime I should have 300bhp in my Scoob by August - cant wait

I think the prices of used 7s are getting quite low now as people are starting to struggle for money with higher cost of living and interest rates etc so they just want some money back. I sold my SLR and *made* £1000...
Doubt I could do that now.

If I had 40k for a car, I'd be choosing between a new Cayman S (if you can handle not having much space) or a new M3.
Used car wise, I'd be looking at getting a 911 C4S, M5, or a Noble...

You could pick up a very good 2.5 Noble M12 for 21-24K privately and have a permanent grin

Actually, you only get English if you can't afford French, you only get French if you can't afford Jap, you only get Jap if you can't afford German, you only get German if you can't afford Italian and you only get Italian if you want to drive over to Paris and goad the French at the mo. Buy a scooter and spend the rest on fine wine, fine food and cheap women.
