must have been something pretty nasty for him to react like that
No excuse. I've had kids at College call me all the names under the Sun. You deal with it in other ways - not stick one on them. If I did, I'd be quite rightly suspended/sacked/etc. You control yourself; it's called being professional.

Look like a complete **** for what a few extra book sales, the equivalent of a days salary I would imagine, he'd make more from public appearances

Giving (and taking) abuse to and from a fellow competitor (not racial stuff from crowds) is part and parcel of just about every high profile team sport these days and i dont think its a bad thing to be honest. Cricket/rugby/football etc

50% of good competitor is his mind set - If you can rattle/upset him with a few choice words and then he flips and gets himself sent off then its not Materazzis fault is it? its far more weakness and stupidity from Zidane.

Dont think the Crystal palace fan who got a good kick from Cantona had this much grief and he was just a supporter with a foul mouth. A foul and abusive mouth from a competitor is all part of the game.

I heard elsewhere that Materazzi called Zidane a "Dirty Terrorist"

I suppose it makes a change from "Garlic smelling French ****" eh?

Italian lip reader on BBC

says Mattarazi said

"I hope your family dies an ugly death" [the day he finds his mother is seriously ill]

Then

"Go **** yourself"

Think I may have nutted him

Meh, you get that kind of abuse all the time as a ref, we just have to keep quiet and take it in a professional manner, I don't see why players should be able to just nut someone ***** nilly. If I could I'd have smacked most players by now.

Yes, we all know you're a referee - you mention it in every thread in here, warranted or not.

Yeah right:
"son of a terrorist *****"....."Hope your family dies an ugly death"....."Go **** yourself"......" i slept with your mother"......"algerian *****"....

Didn't you just know there was always going to be some comment that would allow Zidane to try and justify his headbutt.

Don't tell me "but Materazzi said this and said that"
All the above comments were supposed to have been said to Zidane. Unfortunately they're all the opinions of various expert "lipreaders" and they can't even agree on what was said.
And how do we know that when Zidane's head was turned toward Materazzi he wasn't also slating his parentage/ background/beliefs giving it the "your momma" treatment etc.
Maybe Materazzi has better self control.
It happens week in and week out in the season but most just put up with it.
For the record i'm not Italian and i suspect they both gave as good as each other until Zidane thought "**** it, last match, nothing to lose, had this for years, take that w**ker."

Lip-readers employed by the Italian newspaper La Stampa have
identified the comments by Italian defender Marco Materazzi which so
enraged Zinedine Zidane last night during the world cup final,
resulting in his violent reaction and consequent dismissal:

Materazzi: "Quit now you has been - you were nothing on Johann Cruyff
anyway"

Zidane: "Oh yeah, let's see your ****ing medals you Everton reject."

Materazzi: "Kiss my **** you scum sucking terrorist muslim
mother****er - your God ****s pigs"

Zidane: "Do I look bothered?"

Materazzi: (whispered) " You'll never play for Arsenal"

Zidane: "What did you say...."

At this point Zidane head-butted Materazzi in the chest and was red-
carded.
