Whichever you prefer to work in, North or South, it needs to capped off by retiring or having your base in a leafy area of the middle bit, like so many do.

I live in the NE of Scotland

Advantages:
Clean air, not nearly so much smog or pollution
Nice tap water (cold as well!)
Reasonable house prices (you get a lot more for your money - www.aspc.co.uk)
Minutes from superb countryside, scenery, walks and great driving roads.
Much friendlier people (we got to pubs with neighbours etc on a regular basis)
Much short commuting times (I'd guess the average is about 15 - 25 minutes)
Fresh fish!
Minutes from the beach/coastline (water is a bit cold for swimming though)
Quality of life (OK wages not so high, but overall cost of living is much lower, so money goes further, and you have more left over to do nice things with).
Doesn't take hours to get anywhere.
No smoking in pubs or public places!
Less aggressive drivers (in general)
No London congestion charges
Less people (means nothing ever gets really overcrowded/busy), less queuing for anything on a regular basis.

Disadvantages:
Weather isn't so nice, especially in winter though we don't get the unbearably hot days like the SE has had recently.
You can't drive over to France etc for the weekend via Dover
Less choice of direct holiday/flight destinations, unless you are prepared to drive two hours to Edinburgh/Glasgow first (this is still quicker though than some drives to LHR and to find parking etc!)

I've lived in various places around the country, including 3 years in the SE. I hd a great time in the SE, but the commuting, hours to get anywhere/do anything and cost of housing eventually wore us down. Having lived in other places around the UK, we new there was a better quality of life to be had, so went for it! Not looked back since, and have been here for 14 years now.

Sssh, don't tell everyone how good it is or they'll all want to move there and we want more room/better choice for us when we eventually relocate to Moray And shouldn't the bit about France be in 'advantages'?

South is best as the people up north are a bit common. We have better weather down here. Only draw back is the house-prices are rediculous here.

You get common people wherever you are in the UK, not specifically 'up north'

You mean you think a person's place of birth is 'where they are from'?

How about the case of a forces child born in Germany, brought up in the North of England for 5 years and then schooled in Cyprus. Following that they lived in London, worked in Aberdeen and spent University years in Boston. They now live in Thailand.

Not me BTW but the limited definitions some people seem to have reflect their own staid lives rather than any concrete reality.

In that case they are "from" Germany, but they may not necessarily be German.

Not if you are partial to buying good wine direct from the vinyards

Midgies during July& August are also a disadvantage!

Other advantages:
During summer, the days are much longer - never really gets that dark. You can outside in "daylight" until after 11pm at the moment for example.

On the downside, it's darker during the winter months when you aren't out so much either.

I certainly wouldn't describe anyone like that as from Germany, and I don't think they would either. Have a number of friends with very international backgrounds, and "where are you from" is never an easy question for them to answer. I think most use their passport as a definition - whether or not it's accurate.

That's exactly what I meant, your very narrow definition of 'where someone is from' isn't one I agree with.
It's completely nonsensical for a start, if the question was 'where are you born' I think you'd have a point. Interesting one for you then, in the case of a forces child born on a British army base in Germany (ie British sovereign territory) where are they 'from', using your definition?

Things aren't always as cut and dried as you make out, not everyone is born, lives and dies in the same place. I couldn't think of anything worse personally, even if I'd been born in 'paradise'.

Dont mind the odd occasional visit down south to see my mates who now live down there, but personally - I prefer it up here, lakes less than an hour away, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle only an hours drive........

Cheaper Living, just as good on the job front

OK, so the weather is **** (most of the time) & salary's are often lower, but the good aspects out weigh the bad IMHO

Going to see her or her seeing me is terrible - she hates driving so its a plane job from Gatwick.

I've tried loads of ways Plane, car, Train - none seem particular cheap or quick.

i.e. plane - have to drive to the airport and park up wait and hour and 30 minutes before take off 45 minutes flight time then 30 minutes from Gatwick. almost as quick by car (i've done it in 3.5 hours) train cheapest and quick to Euston but then p***ing about getting teh tube to Victoria and a train to Brighton.

Pain in the a**e mate for sure

Had something similar a few years back when I was with this lass from Colchester, every other week, train, then another train, then another train etc.

Big pain in the ****! Don’t know many southern birds round my way, well one or two and they are not my type……….

Thinking of having a week in either Brighton, Bournemouth or London in a few weeks, sample the local(S) sights
