I know this is thread hijacking a bit but if you have the de-cat centre and say sports cat downpipes (eg STI PPP ones) on a WRX, do you have to fit the decat up pipe ??

Ie is there any problem with keeping the cat in the up pipe (obviously car would be mapped to suit) as I think I am right in saying that the STI has no cat in the up pipe ??

the STI doesnt have a cat in the up pipe no, you dont HAVE to remove it, but they do have a tendency to get very hot and break down at higher boost levels.

If you are going to the trouble of getting a dp fitted, you may as well change the up pipe (as it has to come off...)

Thanks - it makes even more sense then.

What about changing the intercooler pipe like in the ppp pack, if you have a full decat, panel filter and re-map is it worth doing ??

Don't think its an issue on the newages...you'd be better off changing the full intercooler!

Nice ..............any idea what you were making with a plain old TD04 with the same set-up. My set-up is almost identical aside from the STi IC and the hybrid

When you see what the WRX one looks like you'll see why people upgrade them.

For starters they are made of nasty cheap plastic ( Andy F has seen these melt before when running non-standard boost) and are corrugated - not ideal for smooth airflow

You can buy them cheaply here :-

http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog...roducts_id=878

Also see here from one of my previous SIDC posts :-

"Prodrive has estimated around 10 horsepower from the replacement SAMCO Intake hose - and they are correct! We recommend the intake hose rather than removing the third cat, because it makes a more effective increase in power... AND is legal. Our customers have reported a noticeable improvement at each installation. Indeed while mapping ECUs, the Intake hose is so effective that we use a different boost map when one is installed to avoid overshooting!"

Source of this quote w.r.t Samco hose ........

Cal

Sorry Cal no. I went from just a backbox to my set up in one hit. It was a case of when I got the car back.

I know just what you mean....This car was really hard to fault at stage 2...315lbft of torque at 3500rpm made it an awesome road car , the owner decided that he wished to do a few track days and the odd rwyb hence the advice to fit the vf34...Doing this has shifted the power band up but strangely hasn't changed the feel of the vehicle much , it pulls just as hard low down but with a real kick in the *** in the midrange.......

MY03 wagon
MD304 Hybrid turbo
STi pinks
Pump & Reg
APS top mount
Full H&S Scoobysport, inc up-pipe.

Here's how much difference the mapper can make;
  • Richard Bulmer map; 349/347 @ 1.1bar
  • The previous mapper (most of you know who) 291 1.5 bar with 1.6 spikes, left like this by the mapper, who suggested I use a dawes to control it, on standard internals

Fitting a GT30 in a couple of weeks to sort that right out

1 bar on the road is 3k8,, i don't take much notice of the graph as the car didn't seem to happy on the rollers throwing in allot of extra fuel

I am sure if you had a go you would think the lag was bad for all of 5 minutes untill you learned how to drive round it.

I can not say enough how different this car feels to the old vf35 /p18 setup - I really did not like it on the return from being mapped , and I am sure you know the return journy is normally the best

then 4 months later i am used to the car moving around on the road something that I ve never felt in my or any other subaru i ve been in and yes i love it, its soooo sooo fast, and never once have I thought since the last upgrade that i need anymore power .... job done

now when are you going to say that

so are you going for a real gt30 and messing with the exhaust or a hybrid job like mine?

and bigger question hows the 2.5, when / if mine goes pop I will be asking far more questions

Rich

3,800 according to his project thread. Good thread that to read. Far more confidence to fit/play with anything than me. Got me thinking more and more and stage 2...

Mine is a messer arounder like yours, so your turbo shoudl be great on a 2.5. I think the exhaust housing is a fair bit bigger on mine, and the wheel is slightly larger than that on a normal GT30, so im hoping it will behave in a similar way to what yours appears to....that will be a nice grunty track car
