3. :-) All under warranty, mind you I doubt 2 of them were broken, just noisey but during the warranty hayday, dealers love to swap them out so they could charge BMW.

Not only did I have 3 vanos units, I also had 2 rear diffs, 1 gear box, multiple AC bits, front calipers, loads of different sensors, and many diffent engine parts.

Each year I would pay my £720, and on average claim back £3K worth of repairs. However, they charged the warranty set up, but I just managed to get a good £4K of repairs before my one required re-newing. I opted out this year though. Cost of warranty now is just not worth it.

Does make you wonder whether these M cars are worth while or up to the job, as without warranites, repairs can add up.

Brendan, dont get me wrong, I love my M3 and never see myself selling it. But, I dont use it as a daily runner now. I leave it in my garage over the winter, bring it out in the summer time. Also, Im someone that wants my car to be mint, running 100% all the time. Also, I love a warranty, as the slightest noise, rumble, I want it replaced :-)

But that's what scares me. If I wanted a car to garage for six months, I'd buy a Ferrari or Integrale or Aston or TVR. If I buy BMW it's because of the added value that I can use the damn thing daily without worrying about it. If you now tell me that it behaves mechanically like an Italian or British car, I might as well buy one of them and avoid the middle-management stigma!

I think I made a mistake by buying a Dutton as a first car. In four years I'm not sure if I spent more time in it or under it - and when it's your only car, that can be a drag. Just not interested in working on cars any more, would simply like the bloody thing to function and that's it. Witness the current ownership of a Toyota diesel!

Dutton ? Jesus. I know the guy, and he's a ponce. Lives around Worthing. Used to be minted, not so now. Small little chap, looks a bit like Steve Wright (radio dj).

When I was 26 odd, I was nobbing some older woman who was in that `poncey worthing scene` that he was also in. He kept on offering her meals, drinks, holidays to go out with him, but she wasnt having it, I suppose she just going thru her bit of rough stage, which I happily gave her !! :-)

His yard was full of old dutton wrecks that people sent back or had problems with.

As to the M3's, well although I have a convertible, I have a sneaky eye out for a coupe as a daily runner. If one come up for good £££ and looks ok, I'll have it and run it daily.

Sorry, closest I could get to a Caterham 7 when 18 years old and a student.
