Yeah, but you will loose some performance as the ECU will retard the timing.

True, but a higher RON allows the fuel to be burnt more efficiently on an engine designed and setup for higher RON fuels and thus liberate more power.

Having said that, I run my STi uk on 95, no problems.

Which is exactly my point. The difference between UL and SUL in terms of performance requires a stop watch to measure, the difference between brands of SUL is inmaterial compared to all the other real world factors at work.

Having spoken to the two owners of my local Shell garages, it would seem that the present Optimax is being replaced by a 100 RON fuel, and it is starting the change over this week.

This is why they are running down their present supplies, so explains why some still have stock, and others are out. Initially it will be sold at the same price as present Optimax, but will probably increase later.

I have a Honda JDM Civic Type-R engine in my car, which is mapped to Japanese 100RON petrol, so if I run it on 95, which it is quite happy with, I lose about 10hp. This does not matter on the road, but on track I use Optimax with Millers octane booster, which gives me 100, so the new Optimax will be good news for me as I can forget about the booster.

I just Called Shell Customer service and they say the new Optimax is not a rumour and it is being released soon..........in the Autumn to be precise, but no actual release date. Rumor is that is is going to be higher octane and likley to be 100 ron too. So if your shell station is waiting, your a bit stuffed for a few months then ! They also said it would be rolled out to all Station simutaneously and not region by region like the Tesco stuff.

When the guy told me about it at my local Shell garage, he said that when it scanned up on the till, the name had been changed to V Max and then went on to tell me all about it!

Just to clarify...Shell are not releasing a 100ron fuel! call them yourself...shortage is due to transport issues which will be resolved by end of the week....
