Remember these cars come off the production line perfect in fit and finish - any deviation requires answers.
But, if its a car for a few £1000 you are going to expect 'some' inperfections.

well, ive spoken to him, and as was suggested i said i would only be prepared to pay him £4300 not the £4750 he wants, he came back with £4400 its mine, now, should i be chuffed he`s lowered price and be thankful he sees it from my point of view, or should i be paranoid and suspect the worst as he`s so kean to let it go cheap ?!?!?!?!?

I've seen filler being used on one production line before spraying to cover accidental damage......

I'd be a little suspicious - he has a rolling road printout, and has shagged a gearbox - does sound like maybe its been raced/dragged or seen track action.
At £4000 it would be cheap enough as you can keep a budget of £1000 for any other work that needs doing ( in fact, if I bought it first thing I would do is get it in for a major service with cambelts as you dont know the history of the car - its only 10K early, and wont hurt ! ), and £5K would still be a good price.

Just walk away - sounds like you've found the reason the car is cheap, and hasnt sold previously ( will bet you anything the seller has had it advertised for more before now ).
If its needed a new gearbox and engine, it sounds like its been either driven hard, or not maintained properly - who knows what other surprises could be lurking ??
There are good classics out there, but there are also an awful lot of sheds and cars with dodgy pasts - I looked at a lot before I bought, and all the cheaper ones were bad in one way or another, spend a bit more and you'll find much better cars available.

Just general advice here, so take it how you want, but in my experience, if something feels wrong, it usually IS wrong. The amount of times I've ignored my gut instinct and bought a money pit...

The GOLDEN RULE of buying a car, or house, or ANYTHING else for that matter:-
'Things are cheap for a reason ...... find the reason and decide if you can live with it'
OR just don't bother chasing that bargain ... pay the proper price for a proper car and you will have done yourself the biggest favour you can.
Another BIG TIP - if you find yourself talking about how much a car is worth, then you haven't found the right one ....... there is NEVER any need to think about money if the right car appears (it will be the right car at the right money, and you will know it!)

devils advocate....
I bought a new engine and box for my car because I want to sell it and thought i would struggle with 130k miles on the clock, now this isnt the car that is being discussed, but there are genuine reasons why gearboxes and engines get changed, the car's running gear now has a healthy 38k miles on it with documented proof of the new lump/box from a well known/respected supplier.
It can have genuine reasons attached

What would be the the cost of a good quality re-con engine and gearbox? £6000??? Price of a 130k miles Scooby? £3000??? Price of same car with above Engine and Gearbox? £4000??? therefore losing £2000??? Nah, simply doesn't make sense.
The reason engines and gearboxes get changed is because they are shagged - NEVER to make it a better buy for a punter!!

engines and gearboxes can be had for a lot less than that, from very reputable vendors Pete.

Measuring panal gaps is all fine and dandy just remember it's an old car with a fair bit of use...door hinges wear, especially driver's. So the door will drop a few thou, giving uneven gaps.
Same goes for boot, especially if it's been rammed full of junk and forced shut from one side. Or it could be recified simply by having a fiddle with the rubber stops in the shut area.
Just bear that in mind
