The easy answer is the fascination isnt just about the track. Its about ''the place''.
Where else can I go to a circuit, speak to friends from Germany, America, Finland, Sweden, Holland, Belgium etc etc .....the list goes on. When the track closes you retire to the local pub for a meal, beer and mull over the days activities, that doesnt happen with UK tracks. Each time you meet new people, they become friends and you see them again and again ......
The circuit itself is hard to learn and pretty much impossible to master. Cars such as the humble 205 doing battle on an even keel with 911''s. Yes there are sections where 130bhp cars can hassle well driven 400bhp cars.
At the end of the day though its not JUST a track day, its a holiday with many friends .......
Have you heard anyone who has been there say they hated the place?

No I have not been on a track in the UK but you have sooooo many of them I just wondered why you all want to drive over to Germany half a dozen times a year to use one of the busiest tracks in the world where you can not drive it properly as there will always be some one who knows it better and is about to overtake you just as you want to try to improve your lines.
I could understand if it was a closed track with just you lot on it but it isn't it is a public road and so you get all sort of traffic on it.
I agree the atmosphere must be good and you probably do get to meet many people but can't you do that on UK track days aswell.
and daveyboy why do you always feel the need to have a go at me what have I done to you ir are you just a troll? I do not keep going on about racing on the autobahn but when you lot in England keep going on about getting done for speeding on the motorways it make me laugh. I can drive as fast as I like on the autobahn and not worry about looking for police, that is what is so great about it.

The driving standard is also higher on the 'ring' The track is loooong so the only reason I would be sat on someones bum is because im quicker than them. As a general rule cars move out of the way quickly, allowing us both to make good progress without checking speeds. Again this can be hit and miss in the UK with people wanting to race you.
As for cars and bikes hammering past you constantly not allowing you to concentrate on lines thats not true. Once you are lapping under nine mins (for instance) the first car to pass you must be doing 8.45 allowing the time to open and close the barrier. The one behind him 8.30 and so on. Therefore if everything was doing 8 minutes laps you would only be past by 8 cars (allowing for 2 barriers).........I would suggest on quiet evenings I generally dont get passed, on busy days perhaps 2-3 vehicles per lap max....
The social side of things is still the big winner though.........
I hope you have a genuine interest by the way as these replies take time to write

If I have to wait for high powered cars to complete a corner its bad as they dissapear into the distance on the next straight. The next corner im hounding them again.....very annoying. The ring allows me to be slightly more aggressive and overtake where I want to (as long as its safe to do so)

I did skid pan and driver training run by the ADAC sponsored by Subaru at Hockenheim and it was a fantastic day. If at anytime you ringers fancy doing that, Hockenheim has a new purpose built skid training area, with hills, slaloms etc. I would thoroughly recommend it. and you get to do it in STis that you can thrash, plus Subaru pay for the petrol and tyres

I'll more than likely be there, would like a pax lap, or someone with experience to co-drive a lap or 2 for some pointers.
Going next weekend too, seems a bit daunting wish I had practised more on the playstation (not much use as the stupid cars never go where I want them too on that thing )

Dont be daunted by it mate .........its all hype.
Just remember a couple of simple rules .....
1. Keep an eye in your mirrors always
2. Only overtake on the left
3. If something catches you indicate right, move to the right and let off. Do this in plenty of time so the other guy doesn't have to check his speed.
4. DO NOT TRY TO RACE SOMEONE WHO HAS CAUGHT YOU. The reason he is sat behind you, is because he is quicker.
5. Dont try to follow someone who has just overtaken you. Unless you have done a good few laps, It will end in tears.
6. Enjoy yourself.......
Job done.
Your more than welcome to a pax lap, and I will sit beside you if you like....

Oh no it's not for that reason, if I crash then fair play it's my fault.
The main reason is the amount of traffic, having to watch my mirrors all the time because I'm not very fast, and possibly someone/thing hitting me.
On the quite evenings I can relax, go out on track when there isn't loads of people and then I feel much more comfotable.
