Surely your example above should just prove how important it is to insure your car properly!!!!! (if it is your car then insure it under your name)

Of course you could always insure an old banger fully comp in your name with the clause that you are covered to drive any other car with the owners permission. Then no matter how modded the 'owners car' is your covered on your old bangers policy. 3rd party only, but still its 100% legal and the insurer has to pay out for the other party should you crash into someone else.
