Dave / Gary, thanks for the insight, I've got that little knot of excitement in my belly that only the thought of a new performance car can give.
As you would imagine I've spent the last couple hours on the web reading up and notice a few threads about the DSC (?) leaking, due to seals corroding, and then major probs with getting the work done due to the limited specialist tools etc. and the car never feeling 'right' after repair? Either of you heard/know much about this?
Dave - did you have yours delimited too? I've heard the 500bhp model with no limiter will top 180mph? Also what difference in particular does the gearbox remap make? Is it faster shifts or does it just limit the use of the downshift? Finally, does the exhaust 'drone' at crusing speed on the motorway? I drive to the Alps a few times a year and that would drive me nuts.
Oh, and, of course, how much, and where is most reputable??
Sorry for all the questions!
Thanks again
Ed

Buy the RS6 Ed, you know you want to. You've had a forester before, albeit a touch lower, with a different badge.
Nip over to www.tracksport.co.uk and pm my mate VFJ- although he's nearly 200 years old, he runs a trick RS6, and a very serious Evo7; he does, occassionally, talk some sense.
All the best matey,
Simon

Ed, since you say money/price is not an issue why not buy a new M5? Bags of room for 5 people, huge boot, roof rack if more space needed, SMG gearbox rather than 'old man' auto should be more fun. Also at 500+ BHP will keep up with/slaughter most exotica. Added bonus is the 'kudos' you wanted. Much more kudos in driving the M car of the moment, the definitive sports saloon, described by some as 'better' than a ferrari with 2 year list than a car no longer in production that always scored 4.5 stars to the M5s 5 stars

Hello Si, yeah it's a done deal bar the technicalities
Watched 5th gear tonight and the forester looked and sounded fun, but after the test drive today I'm sold. Like you say, I've 'done' the Subaru thing and I should be trying new experiences. At the end of the day, if I don't like it in 6 months I'm not going to lose very much if I chop it in for something else.
Will be interesting to see what it's like on track. I think with the right technique it could be quite fun on more open tracks like Donno and Oulton, but to be fair I just don't have the spare time for trackdays at the mo. That can wait til I hopefully 'exit' in a couple years and set up my GT team

Hehe..........

Finally, but importantly, aside from the M3 CSL and the Z3M Coupe, I'm just not a big fan of BMW's. I appreciate them as great cars, but I just don't feel passionate about them.
Whereas the RS Audi's right back to the RS2 'Porsche' have always pressed that magic button that you don't neccesarily have objective control over.
The other thing...I don't know why, but I would feel much happier / comfortable leaving an RS6 in a deserted mountain car park for hours at a time than a new M5. That may be false comfort I admit, but funnily enough the only other 2 RS6's I've seen on the road in the last 12 months have been in the middle of Wales and the middle of Scotland, with load of bikes on the roof / rear

LOL
Talking of which, just finished on confused.com
Cheapest is £1300, thats for a 30 yr old company director, no convictions, 10k miles a year, 9 years protected NCB, Garaged. The joys of living in SE10 I guess?

Have you found the www.rs246.com site? There are a fair few contributors with RS6's who can probably answer some of your questions better.
As for insurance I found privilege to be the cheapest by far on the RS6. Just over £700 for me (35 years old, 3 points, max protected ncb).
Gary.

Gary - yeah that's the one. Most of the issues I read seem to be US-based to be fair.
Just registered on rs246
I've tried changing various options on my quote and resubmitting but £1300 is rock bottom. Some are over double that
which considering my record is frankly ridiculous

Great write up here... and here:
http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews...0209_audi_rs6/
The latter does a better job than I did trying to explain just how quick the thing is.

No drone in the car ( however I did have a 993TT with Sports Exhaust before and so Audi is MUCH quieter).Mine was re-mapped in Scotland at Star Performance in Kircaldy.
You mentioned RS 6 or Ferrari in earler post. I will be complementing the RS 6 with a Red 360 in December ( will fit a Tubi or Capristo as I like Ferrari V8 noise).

.Interior's much nicer and I imagine the red will look better in the flesh. See you soon for a demo

Just kidding - If it is the one a think, he had a fleet of top machinery ranging from AMG people carrier, Porker, M5, to name but a few. He enjoyed driving and the portfolio of cars gives that a way a little. But he was a senior gentleman that had a bit of fun once in a while. But wouldn't say its seen a hard life. I know he was dissapointed with the breaks on it and kept getting break shudder, which I recall was sorted by Audi in the end.

Aye, certainly no brake shudder yesterday
Edited to add that considering the car has done 30,000 miles, it really is utterly spotless. I went over the thing inch by inch (with my tongue) and there was not a stonechip, a paint swirl or even any ingrained brake dirt in the front alloy wheels. Same on the inside, not a single indicator that the thing has been driven once, let alone for 30,000 miles.
I ended up getting the car for £35k, which considering others I looked at for that price had a minimum of 40,000 miles on the clock and other models which had the same mileage on the clock were up for £41k+ I am pretty pleased. With rumours that the new RS6 will not be coming until late next year and will weigh in at at least £70k, I imagine I can put 10k on the clock and still get good money for it in 12 months time.
I'm certainly not stupid enough to buy any car, let alone a high performance car, as an investment (and I think I probably adequately illustrated that with the work I did on the old mean green machine) but all being well this could actually turn out to be not the 'extravagance' my other half thinks it is
Or am I just trying to convince myself?

Followed a RS6+ at Castle Combe on the last but one Audi Driver trackday. It was a MTM/QST tuned car with 560BHP....cost a fortune to do apparently. It went like stink down the straights and pulled out from my S4 (410BHP) easily and sounded glorious (V8 + full Milltek
). The owner was a complete wuss in the corners and under braking so I eventually got past him. Lovely car though....enjoy.

Thanks. I'll probably get the basic 'miltek and remap' to about 510, but I honestly don't plan to do more than that.
Similarly, I plan to do the ring and maybe one or two trackdays just to 'find the limit' of the car to help me on the road, but frankly it would be insane to track a 2 tonne car with any regularity.

I've had the pleasure of driving an RS6 now.
It felt quite odd driving such a lovely example whilst sat there in my oil-stained combat trousers and "Oh my god, they killed Kenny" T-Shirt *.
Big MO was more suitably dressed in his jeans, open shirt and sports jacket, as he let me gun his car up the motorway and the local link roads. Very Don Johnson, matey.
Thanks again for the refresher course in warp drive technology.
(* I don't always dress like an oik, I was working on my wife's race car... Honest!

Right, I pick it up at 11 on saturday
Just shelled out 350 notes for a full 'lifeshine' valet inside and out. Some special chemical reacting sealant with a 10 year guarantee they apply after mechanically buffing the paint to a perfect flat finish, drys like a crisp shell and protects from chips and scratches. Also scotchguards all the interior leather and dash etc.
Any owners have experience with roof mounted bike racks for them?
