Going to pop the question. Which one of these?

Safest way is to let her choose her own even if it means you don't have one to pop the question with.

If it was me I'd want to choose it myself. In fact I did choose my own when I got engaged back in the eighties but then I also paid for it too Needless to say that relationship didn't last too long
For my second engagement I got given a rare import 12" record instead of a ring. Funnily enough that relationship didn't last very long either

The top one the width of the ring is too thick, especially if it really is 1 carat on show there.
Chunky rings suit certain people, lets just say if your GF has slim fingers it won't suit!!

We spoke about it ages ago and she definitely wanted me to choose.
She's a slender girl with thin fingers, so a thin one it is - does that mean it'll be cheaper
I'll have a look for a platinum one.
2nd time around but her 1st so it'll have to be a special one.

The second one. The wedding band will sit nicely with it - kind of under/behind the stone.
I'd definitely echo the comments re size of stone .5-.66 ct will be adequate in size. 1 ct is HUGE. Get a decent quality stone in a nice setting - the sparkle will more than make up for the size.
Not sure I understand the problem/snobbery behind white gold. Ours (3 rings) all still look nice after 5 years.

I have a white gold wedding band and that's been fine whereas my wife had a white gold engagement ring which had to be replated twice in 3 months, Hence the ring was returned and a platinum band substituted with the orig diamond.
Obviously her wedding band is platinum as is her eternity ring - unfortunately choosing platinum will increase the price somewhat but will look good for years to come. Platinum is also a harder metal which is more resiliant to wear and tear, my wedding band may look fine however it is a celtic twist design and one of the strands has started to split so will need repairing soon. Not bad for 7 years hard use, I never take the ring off no matter what I am doing so it's done well really.
Basically so long as you are happy with your choice that is what is important.

Better to get a smaller one if you can't afford a good quality diamond in a larger size. Most of the stuff on ebay is tat. 1ct isn't too big, my financee's looks great at that size. Go for a classic style, as she'll hopefully be wearing it for many years to come.
Oh, and good luck.

The Mrs likes the first one, but said she'd rather have the second.
she said size doesn't neccessarily matter it's quality that counts (still not too sure how to take that)
make sure you go somewhere intimate and romantic, if a restaurant don't get the staff involved just in case it goes belly up.
Good luck

Update:
Bought the ring. It's in the same vein as the 2nd one. I took advice from my other half's sister - they're mega close, and she said it was spot on.
Got ring for substantially more than the ebay rings and will be delivering the question (probably) this coming Saturday.
Having dreams and trouble sleeping since deciding this - and not through worry of rejection! Had a dream that I was still stuck with my mad ex wife last night, and woke up in a cold sweat!!

Definately the second one...
Make sure you keep the receipt though... we had spoken about if for ages - and I had even started pointing out the rings I liked
He brought me the one I had pointed out, took me to Fuerteventura and proposed - only for me to not like the ring once it was on.. the day after we got back, we went to Goldsmiths and swapped it
Good Luck - let us know how it goes

Got it from a bloke I sold a car to once who's a jeweller. He sold me a ring that retails in his shop in London for just shy of £3500 for just shy of half that amount
