ipods rule! itunes is great! Im sorry we all make mistakes but plugging in an ipod into an empty itunes install is something you just do *not* do as you know not to do it, its like putting diesel in your scoob at the pumps, nothing to stop you doing it, you just wouldnt!

Something like Anapod manager could have recovered the files. The problem with iTunes is it doesn't store them with decent filenames, so knowing what MP3 is what would take time if you used another recovery bit of software. You could possibly have used something like Tag & Rename to read the ID3 info and rename the tracks (once restored) to something recognisable.
Diagnopstic mode is useful for certain things. You don't need to be a Apple genius to use it and at least it would tell you if the drive was working or something was actually wrong with it. How useful that is depends on what it tells you. It helped me determine the disc was sound in mine and it was the software on it that had screwed up so all I had to do was a simple restore.

Ipods are rubbish in hundreds of different ways. Having had 2 and having to deal with the Sh1tty third rate software (I-tunes) I can honestly say that They are a perfect truimph of marketing ability over reality. THey must be the worst MP3 player on the market interms of number of function, software, useability and reliability abd yet stupid people still buy into the Image and buy them.

If I do have an off, then I have an air bag, seat belt, crumple zone, etc etc..... Unix just kills your system, kicks you in the nuts and laughs, no protection, no second chance....

I hate Ipods becuase they are **** and break alot not becuase I need to be different. The sound is also **** and they are designed to force you to continuously spend more money with apple. I can't be arsed to go into all the different issues and flaws with them because I have done it before but clearly only a retard with no actual idea of the capabilities and easy use other mpe3 players offer, or a fashion led numpty would buy an ipod.
Markus has one which kind of backs up my point.

Maybe cheese would be a better companion for his whine. I'm on my second iPod (3G hard disk died after dropping it one too many times I suspect) and there is no doubt about it, ipod+itunes is the way to go.

It would recover all the files like AYBG.mp3, JUYT.mp3, etc.. I was meaning that if you wanted to store these on the PC with more meaningful names you could use Tag&Rename to do it for you.

If you are referring to the iTunes Music Store then you don't have to use it, there are other places to download music, or, shock horror you can buy a CD and rip it into iTunes.

What gets me with Apple is that they don't provide you with the std accessories as part of the price.
With my 4th gen iPod I got:-
Interchangeable Power adapter
USB Cable
Firewire Cable
Dock
Audio Cable (to connect to my HiFi)
Sock cover thingy
My g/f bought a new Video iPod and got:-
USB Cable
Sock cover thingy
Now if she adds what I got to the cost (paying Apple money) the overall iPod price soars. FFS a USB cable is £15 from Apple
OK, she now gets video playback, a bigger screen and a lighter iPod but my capacity is 10Gb larger and the quality of mine feels a lot better - namely the touch controls.
There's obviously **** loads of other accessories, but most consumer items are like that - and that's where they make most of their money.
It annoys me that the value-for-money aspect is still slipping with Apple. You buy a black Video Ipod and they can't even give you black earphones to match

I have a black video ipod and just threw the standard earphones in a drawer.
Still, it could be worse, we could have Micro$oft producing a rival which would only come in one colour to match the blue screen of death.
Apple iPod - reassuringly expensive. I love mine

[QUOTE=Markus]I'm interested about the "force you to spend more money with Apple" side of things. QUOTE]
Once you have imported your CD collection to I-tunes and your IPOD has broken just out of warranty you then have a choice of Loosing the AAC fromat songs from I-Tunes when you want to change to a better player, Or buying another IPOD that will break again in a years time.THis is the real reason Apple was so happy to add totally restricive copy preventionto its software. They also try pretty hard to get you to use I-tunes which lets be honest is more expensive than buying a cd in tescos alot of the time.

either, in years of daily commuter use.
You're also totally misinformed, the DRM isn't "totally restrictive", do you have any idea what you are talking about?
iTunes is free, what are you talking about Tesco CDs for? Are you confusing iTunes with iTMS?
You spread FUD.

I personally think that Ipods are not the best quality mp3/mp4 players out there.
What Apple are excellent at though is marketing the brand and coming up with a simple to use device that is marketed as such. How many other MP3/MP4 devices do you see advertised in the main media streams? Not many unfortunately.
It tends to be the geeky people (and yes, I am one of those ) that take the effort to research things to death and go for the best thing that suits them. The majority of people aren't like that though and will go for the popular named brands over the more obscure, but maybe functionally richer, alternatives.
I tried one and didn't like it, so I didn't buy one. Some of my family have them and I don't slag them off, it was their choice.....even if it was wrong
