Its funny because it starts ok - does not knock at tickover or have any smoke, i even checked the oil for traces of silver particles - nothing.

having searched on here MY99's were quite common for the cambelt tensioner to let go so i am hoping its that

But if not, you could always rip out the engine and install some pedals. I'm sure it will be fast enough for you still ! ! Maybe even put out more than 229bhp........ or put a couple of holes in the drivers footwell and use it like a flintstone car........run,run,run...
