Yessssireee and you missed it....I'll make it more obvious next time by sticking an "I'm an ironic" post flag on it, just for you.

I know the level can be pretty low in here but how can anyone think a post bigging up 'A song for Great Britain' that includes the line "In England's green and pleasant land" is serious is beyond me . Thought I'd just go along with the general flow of things here in Non scooby related.

..and strictly speaking, God Save the Queen is the national anthem of the UK, i.e. Great Britain & Northern Ireland.

Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mad,
Tros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.

Chorus
Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad,
Tra môr yn fur
I'r bur hoffbau,
O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.

Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn, i'm golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
Ei nentydd, afonydd, i mi.

Chorus

Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad dan ei droed,
Mae hen iaith y Gymry mor fyw ag erioed,
Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,
Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.

No. At least, that's not her title.

Her title is "Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith."

And as has been pointed out already, Scotland and the other Realms and territories have never had an Elizabeth the First, so her title is incorrect.

Ireland, give it back to the Irish, we don't want it anyway.

and Jerusalem will be the anthem for all.........
A$$hole!

I quite enjoy hearing Jerusalem and Men of Harlech as well as Flower of Scotland. It's not so much the songs themselves but the spirit in which they are sung which gives them credence.

But then again I am more broad minded than some people...Stick to your hutch.

Well said my man.

In the end the majority of us are British born and bred. We may not all be English but that's not the be all and end all.

In the end the national anthem is only a song. (and that comment will no doubt upset a few people as well).

Jerusalem

Written by William Blake

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green
And was the holy lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen

And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills
And was Jerusalem builded there
Among those dark Satanic mills

Bring me my bow of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spears o'clouds unfold
Bring me my chariot of fire

I will not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my sword sleep in hand
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land

Now that is so much better (not than the Celtic anthems) than God Save The Queen.

There's an alternative, too. It's actually the next hymn in the Ancient and Modern:

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love:
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.

Great tune (Gustav Holst) and suitable lyrics. Plus some loony lefty bishop has tried to ban it so it must be good

I see the fact I was posting 'ironicly' in the style of many other posts in non scooby related and even said so before you posted yourself passed you by?

As it happens I'm not English myself but I do appreciate the ages old "who can p1ss highest up the wall" competition beloved of all the races of the UK.

That makes you the a55hole Ken.

Sorry but Jerusalem isn't in England so what the **** do you want to sing that for?

Stick to your boring ENGLISH national anthem - God save the Queen.

I noticed that as usual after one win the good old English commentators reckon that's the Grand Slam on for England & the Six Nations Championship won - they only beat a badly injury depleated Welsh Team. (and with a Wee bit of cheating from Matt Dawson and some good old referee bias)

Get it up ye!!

SB, probably not so appropriate as it doesn't mention the name of the country!

As for Big Den, if you are literate enough to read the lyrics rather than just the title, you might see the connection...

I agree that the national anthem is not particularly inspiring but I do agree with the sentiments.

I have great respect for someone who took over the job as ruler when she was very young and without ever putting a foot wrong has continued to work for this country and its people ever since, and she is 80 years old now.

It is worth remembering that she still has the power to dissolve Parliament, we may need that some day!
