i went on a website the otherday and this box popped up a number of symbols appeared in it. Next thing IE had crashed and i was getting pop ups from windows saying my system was infected

then computer resarted, as soon as it came back on infection warning started appearing every few 2nds. Computer froze then when started respomnding again it had connected to net and downloaded spy sherrif.

Looks like a spyware tool but after reading various sites it is a trojan its self. It starts to scan and says finds infections but to remove them you need to upgrade by paying.

I would close the program then try to install but it said i had to exit the program before i could uninstall even though id closed it. I couldnt end the processes from the task manager as it said the administrator had disabled the task manager even though i was logged on as administrator and hadnt done it.

Been a right pain getting rid of it but i eventually got rid of the spysherrif crap. Managed to get AVG running and that found 40 suspicious files. Id only done a full scan day before so there was 0 on before id visited this site.

Managed to get task manager back on but theres about 40 different iexplore.exe in teh processes. I close them but they open up again a few seconds later.

Now AVG keeps popping up saying virus found but it cant delete them.

Ran a online scan with symantec and these are where the problems come from
C:\WINDOWS\inet20004\3.01.00.dll is infected with Adware.Replace
C:\WINDOWS\inet20004\alg.exe.bak is infected with W32.Conycspa.G@mm
C:\WINDOWS\inet20004\winlogon.exe is infected with Trojan.Bookmarker

Just cant get rid of them though

I suggest that anyone that has been infected by a virus (not detected, I mean infected) or Trojan then format your hard drive and start again. Once your system has been compromised you will never be sure that your PC is safe. If you do anything on your PC like Internet banking, logging into Email, paypal, ebay amazon etc, then dont take any chances. Like Iain says, pay for a decent virus protection suite and a firewall product whether it be hardware or software.

I used it on my home machine and when i moved to Nod32 i was more impressed with that to be honest, seems to catch more and much smaller footprint on the machine

Iain was my link on post 16 the one you were on about. I think Jack Clark posted it a while back

That looks good "Nod32" Where is the best place to get it from?

I have no anti virus at all at the mo so need to get it sorted asap.

the comp is disconnected from the net at the mo..

I use a hardware firewall/Router

this one

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/...d8028a976.html

I dont use a software firewall on my home network I use the router to restrict outgoing traffic.

However if you want a decent software firewall id go for outpost or zonealarm pro.

Cheaper free option? Windows SP2 firewall or free version of zonealarm.
