So, there we have it then, the Comma stuff is a basic grade III cooking oil
not to be confused with quality ester/pao based oils like Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V or Castrol RS

As already posted on this thread, the results of the Halfords(Comma) oil analysis turns up the actual real FACT that :
The Halfords oil is what can loosely be termed 'synthetic' but it is not a true synthetic in our understanding of what that is : the more expensive Silkolene (Pro S 5w-40 for example) oil is.
A Subaru may or may not benefit from the better oil (which the true synthetic is) but is there disagreement that the Silkolene product is a better lubricant ?

It can't Pete. You will be seeing how much goes into the car and working out the MPG from that. you don't fill up and say that 45 ltrs do you... without looking??

Errrrm, well, I do know that a full tank gets me 380 miles on a run before needing filling .............. nowt wrong with that!

So 320 pre tank ~24mpg. More like what everyone else gets.

So what your basically telling us that you spend approximately £90 a year on fuel to get to work and back!!!


(plus of course £15 on oil and £2.50 on Wurthers originals...)

add insurance which I'm sure costs you about £120 somehow, tax £165,

I'll estimate £100 for fuel when towing your caravan to cornwall twice a year...

which means your annual car running costs are in the region of


£492.50...

don't forget your MOD petrol allowance at 31p a mile is a deduction of £198.40

which is a total of £299.10

I also expect you charge your 'car share' £20 a month...£240

Real Total : £59.10!!!

Just as well your 'celebrity guest speaker' QVC shopping channel fee's from comma oil net's you a cool £2K a year!

Amazing ...... so, basically, by Subaru recommending Shell Helix - they are ALSO recommending Halfords and Comma at £15 for 5 Litres??

But, it CAN'T be any good ...... it's TOO cheap!!

Please COMMA, can you re-package your standard £15 Oil in a carton called RALLYX and sell it for £59:99?? ........... some clowns on here will buy it and extol its virtues

Some people, eh?? Haven't a clue!!!

On this post someone asked about Shell oil.
I e-mailed them and have recieved this response.

Good morning Martin

Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40 is a grade 3 synthetic oil. Group 4 contains PAO. Hope this helps.

If there is anything else you require please contact the Customer Service Centre.

There must be an awful lot of cars driving about with this oil in them.
Presumably not seizing up all the time.

And to clarify they are hydrocracked mineral oil not a vegtable based cooking oil as some people seem to think!!!
Vegtable based oil would be much like Castrol R racing oil.

In your original post you said that Millers response was that XFS 5/40 was a mixture of class III and IV(PAO) Does this alter its classification or does it remain in class III?
I am currently running this oil in my STi PPP for the winter as I could'nt obtain CFS 5/40 at the time.

I probably shouldn't state catagorically that it is Class III, but if it was a PAO synthetic, then there would be no need to mention the Class III in their reply.
It seems pretty reasonable to assume its a Class III synthetic, and the response is deliberately misleading but its still a perfectly good oil.
