I'm not expecting perfection, you know! I don't believe that anyone in this world punctuates perfectly; at the highest level even the experts disagree over some usage. I make mistakes pretty often myself. A basic improvement across the board has to be a good thing, though - hasn't it? I prefer to see writing with no apostrophes at all than with them all in the wrong place, as if they've been scattered there with a pepperpot.

Utter poppycock, I use them all the time. To omit the use of commas makes the text you are reading appear to be spoken by someone that can't breathe properly.

Commas, colons and the like are there to structure a sentance, otherwise the sentances are either too small and fragmented or are long winded and dull.

Presently, I am working at a site on Yeomans Way (signed exactly that), I have pointed out the error of the council's ways to the local Highway officer but he thinks it is correct.

The Way of the Yeoman, hence it carries the obligatory (for possession of) '

To those who think this is mere triviality:
You can see for yourself the nation of socially retarded children, inept at conversation, unable to structure a sentance of any substance and (this is the killer) able to vote!
Saints preserve us.

I'd have put a full colon or an em dash in instead of the semicolon you used: the second part of the sentence is explaining the first.

At the risk of sounding pedantic, isn't "and" a joining word, therefore shouldn't be used immediately after a full stop?!

I think that "Animal" in the Muppets band should have worn welding gloves-for his own protection!

I don't get it! From day dot when we lived in trees the Human race has strived to better itself and make progress but it's frowned upon to encourage people to write correctly!

I don't expect to see exact punctuation either, I'm not massively hot on it myself but it'd be nice to see that folk at least made an effort! Sitting around sulking cos you can't spell is bollocks, go learn! It's not a new thing, you don't have to push any boundaries, all the hard work has been done just get off your **** and take a look! (Dyslexia aside).

You are true in what you state, and is a conjunction.
It can be used after a full stop but children are taught to avoid it during their formative years, I do not know why.

Yeh, inlish dint matta. Nore dus maffs. Mi car has 900bhp i swar as i'ts the capcity timez teh cilinders timez won undrid innit so 2 liters timez 4 cilinders timez won undrid is 900bhp amy right? corz i am.

Let's face it, the REAL reason people don't write as correctly as they can is LAZYNESS, pure and simple. I try to write my best but sometimes I can't be that arsed, but I will fully accept that this is lazyness on my part. On the whole, one tries though which is more than can be said for many here.

We're not expecting top notch english skills, just the basics which many fail to have. Why do they fail to have the basics? Are they stupid or do they have learning difficulties, it'll be one or the other. Write stupid and people will think you're stupid. That's YOUR fault, not those that read your posts.

Same as driving, I don't expect all drivers to be great but you expect the basics that enabled them to pass their test.

No it isn't. It is supplying additional information relevant to the sentence but is not explaining the first part. The semicolon is correct.

TBH, I can't explain the circumstances under which the semicolon is used. But I know where it looks right, and where it doesn't. And in your sentence it doesn't seem to be appropriate. Of course our usage of the language and punctuation is part of our own individual style of writing, but you have to know the rules before you can break them.

semicolon rules

The first case is the relevant one.

Use a semicolon to combine two very closely related complete sentences.
