Your attitude to other people speaks volumes about your personality, you know. Your trackday analogy doesn't really hold water, either. It would only be relevant if I was turning up week after week driving like a ****, not improving at all, not trying to improve, and worst of all - failing to see that there was any need for improvement.

About time Bubba; the complete disregard for grammar on Scoobynet can be ever so frustrating.
To me, the hardest part to comprehend is that the masses dont see the decline in standards as worrying!

Bubba, may I make a suggestion for your next crusade?

Over punctuating, surely a single exclamation or question mark is adequate?

Indeed, I've already coined a suitable term: Punctuarrhoea.

Commas are a sign of weakness. Good sentences are clear without the use of commas. Bad sentences use commas as a crutch to help thickies limp along. Rewrite any sentence that requires the use of a comma. If all else fails just take the commas out of the sentence without changing anything else. Occasionally sprinkle a few commas into the document at random just to keep Bubba happy.

'my point is i CANT drive and my car is slow but but i still have as much rite to drive on here as anyone'

You could always try to learn how to spell and word things correctly. Try a dictionary for example! Do you have the Google toolbar? If you do, next time you type something online press the ABC Check button. It's not the best spell checker in the world but it's a start and you'll pick things up as you go along.

Of the most mis-used in current English, the Apostrophe remains the most common IMO.

An extract from a business card I read on the wall of my local chip shop:-

.....all types of building work undertaken:-
Garage's, fence's, extension's, conservatory's,.....

Shocking!

Well done Bubba.
Proper punctuation contributes to expression and comprehension of the sentence.

Now do one, short version, of course, on spelling and the exceptions to the rules!

*Nuff said, back to my hutch!*

Never be afraid to learn.
An excellent topic to raise Mr. po.
The battle is though being lost.
Mrs Vegescoob is starting to doubt her own abilities in this area for daily she is presented with misuse of the humble apostrophe by those who should know better.

English is the number one language in the world because it is a living, growing language, not restrained by pointless rubbish like punctuation. I agree with the person who said punctuation is for idiots and people who rabbit on about the *******isation of our language and incorrect use of punctuation are tiny minded twaaats. We dont use punctuation when we speak so why do we have to use it when we write!!!I think we should slap asbo's on boring farts who go on bout such matters.

Good points, except that when we speak we use pauses, inflection, dynamic changes of volume and tone, facial expression and many other signposts that help to convey the true meaning of what we say. Are you saying that with the written word we can do without all that subtlety and nuance? If you can get by without it then your thoughts must be as dull and lifeless as your prose.

gosh, that's very erudite.

must admit I've given up being annoyed by bad grammar and punctuation; I just grit my teeth and accept it as the changing face of the English language.

This might have been touched on in this thread, or I might just be going off on one, as usual! Either way, I just wanted to throw an ickle thought into the mix for everyone.

Punctuation and spelling is extremely important. Misunderstanding, and/or blatant misuse can cause confusion.

SOME people on SN (and I am not pointing fingers) may or may not have learning difficultes, which could impact punctuation, grammar and spelling in many different ways.

SOME people may just be weaker in this area than others, and will excel in something others are weak at.

and then again, SOME people (again, no fingers!) may be doing it purely in an attempt to p1ss other SN users off.

Whichever catergory they may fall into, please just think about what YOU are typing in response. You may be responding to a vunerable person.

Purely, as examples, and by that I mean I am not apportioning blame or finger pointing, by recommending the use of spellcheck/ online dictionaries or pulling people up on comments they have written because of poor spelling or punctuation, you may actually be dissuading people from visiting SN.

I know the majority of things posted, are not intended to be malicious or hurtful, but some responses, which I have seen in the past, are.

As I said at the beginning, I may just have gone off on one, but as my immediate thoughts and concerns, when reading this thread, were of those I have sat here and typed for the past 10 minutes, and as such, I felt I should air them.

I fully expect and appreciate any response that is written - as long as it is constructive!

English is my second language.14 years ago when I came to this country,my spoken and written English was ridiculed by the modern English usage lovers.I was told that Queen's English was dated and I needed to upgrade my language to suit contemporary English in vogue.
When I started to use internet a few years ago,I straight away spotted the informal/slang usage as well as,faulty grammar etc. all over on the internet, not just on SN.
But the thing is,being in SN is not exactly typing a CV.So it's not so crucial to be accurate with punctuation etc. IMO as long as, one is able to express what one means.
However,I support the view that correct language will help with correct expression.
Not for Bubba's sake or anything, but for the sake of English itself.I mean Roy Cropper ain't all that bad!
some may have different views.Even educationists had adapted different technique in 1980's to let pupils express without worrying about grammar.
I mean, how many kids still say-"my pencil is broke!" rather than saying " My pencil is broken!"
So basically, just do what you want! If you sound like a rapper,it's your own ******* fault!
And you all can slate me for my Hinglish in this post coz quite frankly,i dont givva ****!
