Matt: No wrap on those headers?
Personally, if it looks tidy, and no oil leaks etc matt's engine looks good.
Painting/cleaning gives a lot of satisfaction to the whole job though.

Steven: I put a hill climb 16v 205 engine in a fresh shell today..everything seems to be bolted together with 11mm nuts!
Mind you, engine and box drops in from above and sits there in the shell in 30 mins, what bliss is that?

Need more progress.
Engine in the house, = great wife!

Tim

The matt black paint will have a negative effect on the conduction of heat but a positive effect on the radiation of heat.
The net effect is negligable in my experience.
Overheating has certainly never been a consideration on my car, even without an air/oil cooler and using the std rad with 1 fan.

Steven i know exactly what you mean about evey time you open the bonnet and it looks ****! Subaru seem to have covered my entire engine bay in some sort of sealing gunk, im sure it stops corrosion but it look horrible.
Part of my project is tidying this up as i go along, and i will be much happier once it's tidy too.
Hence the start with painting the new gbox

Running in will take, what, 2 hours

It wont be running 100% by the 9th, but at least 75% (I hope), it then allows 6 weeks for SSO

If i dont set deadlines, it wont happen , i know what i am like.

Bit more progress.

The EJ22 blocks have an additional breather on the top of the block, near the front (see pics). Not a problem until you have a phase 2 water cross pipe that interferes. Options were:

1. tap and thread and core plug - Couldnt do, as short block was already built.

2. Weld it up - as above really

3. Put a non thread core plug in - Yes, which David Wallis made from brass for me on the lathe.

Steven has your camera got a macro mode button?

Oh and what brand of vernier pulleys are they?

Looking 'cool'.
Are the vernier sprockets lighter than the stock units?

Graham, no they are probably heavier in total, as 3 of the 4 on the phase 2 engines are plastic.

WW, the idea was to cure a problem we had created, increase the plenum size, and make it look a little better. When David first did the modification to the phase 2 manifold, it effectively ment that the air virtually hit a brick wall straight after the TB, so cutting it out and greatly increasing the plenum, will hopefully allow the air to enter the inlet manifold far easier.

Manifold looks nice, I like the location of the vacuum nipples..

What colour is the manifold going to be?

Steven the manifolds on the wrong way round

In all seriousness, do you find the second knock sensor responds aswell piggybacked as it is?

Simon, some form of red (powder coated i suspect)

Mo, oops, best turn it back round. Re the knock sensors, i honestly dont know, it seemed a logical position for them both together. The det can tube will be fixed where a Knock Link sensor would normal go. If there is no correlation later, they can always be split.

I welded it as I was told to.. And I did suggest opening the plenum out if you remember, but you said, nah **** it, lets have a beer instead!

Well you did say **** it..
