Ah, it doesn't work if you use the full editor, even if you do it the clever way, you have to do it in the quick reply bit.

btw, to see to full list of smiles you need to use the reply bit and not quick reply,you also need to update you CP fingy to see the full editor

Go to user CP, then edit options and see if "Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)" is ticked, if it's not then tick it and hopefully it should work
