British eccentrics and inventors.

People here know I have little affinity for the country I was born in - hey, I never chose it - but I did feel a stirring while watching Top Gear Xtra and the interview with Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Bloody hell, what a guy. And although an individual, I believe he is somehow representative (if at an extreme level) of the British character - pragmatic, phlegmatic, and stubborn, if not downright bloody-minded.

As for comedy, I think we just lost a great person, though you wouldn't know his name. Look at Harry Thompson's obituary:

Our long tradition of tolerance and understanding, and the way we stood up to the Germans in the dark days of war.

I used to think the culture was great, especially when compared with other countries, but it's seriously going down hill these days.

For example, I play in several different orchestras in and around the Wiltshire area. These days it is getting soooo hard to get an audience. For example, in Swindon we are generally getting somewhere around 50-100 people in the audience for our concerts. Pretty pathetic when you consider the population of Swindon is somewhere around 170,000 people. Seems all they are interested in these days in binge drinking and general chav behaviour.

The scenary in the UK is still some of the best in the world though
