So we are saying that Tail docking for dogs that dont work is a cosmetic procedure?

In which case how does a rotty work in a manner that will damage his tail?

Docking a Spaniel that works cover i can see though having owned both docked and undocked springer i find it hard to believe that it is a common injury.

I just think it is sad that people will allow a dog to have a part of its body chopped off to make it look better. if you dont like the way it looks then is it the right dog? dont think many dog owners on here work their dogs regularly? And many other working breeds dont have the tail removed.

Our 1st Spaniel, Laddie had his tail docked. His parents were working dogs. Our 2nd Spaniel Brad had his tail docked, his parents were also working dogs. Teddy our 3rd Spaniel has a tail, we adopted him at about 2 to 3 years old.

Brad and Teddy don't work but do go running around the fields, jumping over fences and chasing any kind of wildlife they can (rabbits, deer, pheasant) Brad comes home happy with his little bit of tail in the air. Teddy ofen comes home crying with his tail bleeding, he then gets upset as we have to try and pick out the thorns and make sure his wounds don't get infected. He was badly treated before he came to us and gets worked up if he is in pain or scared.

From experience I realise that certain breeds benefit from docked tails. Obviously if its just for show then I dont think it should be allowed.

I've had three Ridgebacks and several Labs over the years and none of them have suffered from tail injuries and although not working dogs, they certainly have had more than their fair share of exercise. Hounds don't have docked tails and none of the Spanish hunting dogs I've seen have docked tails so I don't see how tail injuries are that much of a problems or even neccessary - other than for cosmetic purposes or perhaps historical reasons.

As i said i had two springers one with Tail one with out and i didnt notice any problems with the one with a tail.

But if you are going to work the dog then maybe docking can be justified but as i said above there are some beautiful Rotty's with chopped tail and this was explained as being done because they would apparently look silly with a full tail? not because they would damage it working.

Correct me if i am wrong but what work do the Rotty's above do that will damage their tail any more than say a GSD or a Lab?

Rotties like other dogs could get there tail court on barb wire, thorns, brambles, cut to pieces...etc.

When they are on guard duty someone could get hold of there tail and thrown them around and also if they attacked an intruder some one could pull them off by there tail if they were on top of someone.

Rotties look far better with out the bushy tail that they would have if they were not docked.

I wouldn't fancy grabbing a Rotties tail whilst it was in full attack mode! (I used to own one by the way).

It is just that the same reasoning for chopping off the rotties tail could be applied to GSD's that work as guard dogs but we don’t chop there tails off! Do they just not get upset by tail pulling and Lab's work in the same cover as Springer’s which Rotties don’t and yet have full tails!

To be honest I think it is all about Image and people are more worried by the image of the dog they buy than what characteristics it has.

Cosmetic surgery of the animal to create an image for the owner!

I can only speak for Boxers.
The boxer's tail is a spindley thing in comparison to the body and damage occurs rather easily due to the power that can be transfered through it ( I say this as I have met with people whom have tailed dogs and 50% -6 out of 12- had damage ) There is a breeder that I know of that is leaving her dogs undocked and is recieving a fair bit of press (so there may be a bit of an ulterior motive there )
I have 2 Boxers and would hate to see what damage they would do to one and others tails when out and about !!
It is a subject that there will always be 'for' and 'against' argument and each will support their views strongly.

I'm glad my dog has no tail. Not because of how it looks, he's as ugly as an old impreza, but with it he'd knock down old ladies and probably kill a small child.

I'm suprised there is not a photo of Adrian F on here, after all he's like a dog with a bone , give up mate, agree to dis-agree.
The thread is all about pictures of your dogs, not a debate on tail docking. If you want to start a full on debate start a new thread.

LOL

Its called "breed standard"

Rotties were originally bred as hearding and protection dogs, For Cattle.

Heavy cow plus tail = disaster.

The undocked spaniels that beat/retrieve at our shoot end up with scratched and slightly bleeding tails virtually every single time we go out. It doesn't seem to bother them much in all honesty, the enjoyment they get being out and about is clearly more important to them than the discomfort they get from it, otherwise they wouldn't go barrelling full pelt into brambles , but people who say they don't believe the dogs get injured tails are simply not aware of the wear and tear that arises in the field.

(like most of the people who comment about field sports for that matter)
