you seem to be under the impression that a lorry which was going too fast which means it was probably empty wont be able to stop quickly YOU ARE WRONG!!

Your sprinter would probably take longer with a half load in it than the lorry would!!

Oh and by the way if it was a single carriage way road the speed limit for goods vehicles is 40mph. they are only allowed to do 60mph on motorways, Dual carriage ways the limit is 50. So he was speeding anyway.

So my nearly new sprinter (that was actually empty) which weighs a little over 2 tonnes with very good brakes would take longer than a huge 8 wheeler truck (that was fully loaded with stone type stuff) to stop?

Well if thats true I will eat my online Virtual Hat!

Are all the lorrys I see that crash in to the back off each other on the motorways also fitted with these magic brakes than can stop quicker than anything else?

I have to agree with Deidre that if I was triving an 8 wheeler truck through a 40mph limit at around 65mph at 8.15am then I well and truly deserve to be "shopped"!

Reality is that there are so few truck drivers available for work these days that even if you did report him his boss would be very unlikely to do anything about it.

I've spent the best part of the past 2 1/2 years trying to persuade truck drivers to drive more safely and their managers to give a damn. Sadly no one does. Even though if the manager was found to have not trained the driver properly in all aspects of safe driving and s/he was then involved in a fatal accident, the manager could be done for Corporate Manslaughter and go to jail. It happens.

I drive a 3.55 tonne van and i have also driven a cargo with air brakes

I know which one i would want to be in if i had to stop quick!!

As for the crashed lorries on motorways that has NOTHING to do with their brakes and everything to do with them driving to close ffs have you seen how close they drive!!

Agreed but it's a f**king sad day when we all go around shopping each other for speeding. If he'd had an accident, hit a parked car, killed a granny then yes, give a statement but this type of curtain twitching grass we're all better off without.

New Labour would love this man.

I might shake my head and think what a kn0b but then I forget about it and change tracks on my CD.... get on with your own life and stop being a busybody.

I don't know if some of you actually read this thread or are just following the sheep mentality one of things thats wrong with our country today

How did I know how fast it was going? Well my uncaliberated speedo said I was travelling at 55mph but the lorry was still accelerating away at a fair pace which would of definetly of been above 60mph. hence the reason why I put 60mph to 65mph im my title.

So you would rather be in a lorry which on average has a stopping distance of three times that of a van?

Did you know one of the reasons for this was that air brakes take up to 1 second to build up pressure and apply the brakes?

Large vehicles at those sorts of speeds in constricted ares are not only dangerous but also alarming to other people and that is unfair as well.

Its down to being unselfish and thinking of others.

I don't think anyone disagrees with that but surely it's down to the government to police the populace. The day we start policing ourselves is the day we truly know that freedom is a thing of the past.

its got nothing to do with how close they drive, its the a$$hole cutting in front of them to get off the next junction. If youre going to cut in cut in *behind* the lorry you dumbasses. cutting in to a 1-2 car space infront of a lorry where the traffic stops isnt very inteligent is it, like theyve got racing brakes to stop in an instant...
Im sorry but going by what i see at the wycombe m40 & Winnersh M4 junction the car driver is fully to blame dumbasses

I would hardly say that phoning the owner of a company was creating a "Police State" if one of my drivers was driving like a retard I would want to know. Thats why I wrote in my originall post "I don't really want to call the Police"

And the comment that was written about New Labour you couldnt be further from the truth! Always makes me laugh all these people who "didn't" vote for Blair! I can gurantee that some of you muppets did, who now swear blind you didn't!

Erm... No, can't quite agree with that. The populace already polices or regulates itself or it should do. It's when everyone thinks 'none of my business' etc. that the wheels start coming off.

Freedom isn't the ability to do what you like whenever you want to. There are limits to acceptable behaviour. If the lorry in the original post came bombing through your street every day, could you state you wouldn't have the tiniest concerns that there might be an accident or until there was an accident?

Well said vindaloo, my thoughts exactly. There is already a general attitude of "i'm alright jack, to hell with you" about this country & we should not try & blame it on the government/police etc - everyone has a responsibility to speak up about anti-social/dangerous behaviour (because one day it might just be someone you care about that gets killed/injured by a speeding driver).

To the thread-starter - yes, i would call the owner of the company & if you dont get a satisfactory response then i'd at least be comforted by the fact that you'd done something rather than join in with the "let someone else worry about it" brigade.

If that's how you took what I'm saying then I'm sorry. Maybe I was a little simplistic.

If I saw someone getting mugged I would call the police. If I've seen something that was a little more subjective - like speeding - I wouldn't. I couldn't possibly PROVE the guy was speeding and if the police were in a position to they wouldn't need my help.

Yes, of course I'd be concerned if it was a regular occurrence but who said it was?

You'd be pretty p!ssed off if everytime you overtook a slowcoach or were a bit late braking because you were distracted or drifted onto the rumblestrip you got a hasty visit from plod because a fellow citizen had grassed you up as a dangerous driver.

Speed is not the only problem on our roads although all the safety groups government etc seem to think it is then everyone else thinks it is before long we get to the point where we are now SPEEDER OH MY GOD as if you have never done it !!

I see much more serious problems every day
people jumping red lights
tailgaters
idiots with fog lights on (cos they look cool!!)
mobile phones being used
people changing lane without indicating
people who need 2 lanes at roundabouts just to go straight on !!
and my favourite people who CANNOT reverse in a straight line

by all means phone and complain but make it consistent complain about ALL the crap driving not just the bit that annoys you

rant over

Sorry, I don't think that a big ******* tipper lorry at 50% over the limit through a village is equal to someone who can't reverse in a straight line, unless you are talking about someone reversing back up the hard shoulder to get to the slip road.

yea you can add that to my list and add this too

I was overtaking a lorry on a dual carrageway? earlier today and i indicated to pull in once i passed the lorry next thing i know some tosser in a vectra is undertaking me!!!

Iwas not going slow but this guy was like a bank robber on the run from the police could easily have caused an accident.
He then pulled back out into the lane i was attempting to vacate ??

should i report him???

This is not a **** take just another example of the poor driving standards in this country we all see every day

i had a vectra desperate to undertake me too. I was behind a slow vehicle which was trying to move into the middle lane but couldnt cos every dumb fcker was undertaking thus preventing the very thing that was slowing them down to move out of the way. dumb fckers.

Again, this is & will aways be Deja Moo....
