That's a shame Paul .... I spoke to Julian today and mentioned your situation and the fact that you were hoping to call the early part of next week, he was happy with that

Thumbs up Ta

I haven't picked em up yet, but BIG THANKS to Silverscoobysport - I've been watching this GB for a while and you've been well on top of it and very helpful. I'm only in Bristol, so perhaps I might catch up with you some time in South Wales.

As soon as I get the wheels on I'll post some pics of Black Mica Scoob/Cadnium Pearl 18s - once I figure out how to post pics that is....

Yes we may well catch up some time as we have become quite active in the Welsh section and we have a few things planned so I will be out and about I hope. I'm not that far away as I'm in between the two bridges right on the estuary

Default fitting these them there alloys

These 18" GRA alloys represent the first diy 'mod' i'm about to undertake on me scooby (my03 wrx).
I'm nervous about this, even though all i'm really doing is changing a tyre x 4.
Having reviewed the previous postings on this thread, I thought I'd try and summarise what the general consensus seems to be wrt fitting these alloys yourself:

1. A torque wrench is required

2. A ratchet is required

3. A 19mm socket is required

4. Lots of electrical insulating tape is required to wrap up 1-3 above to protect precious alloys.

I have a few questions, most of them noob questions, so bear with me:

1. Torque setting should be 65lb/ft for the wheel nuts. Correct?

2. Why do I need both a ratchet and torque wrench? Can't I do/undo me nuts (ooh er) with just the one or should I tighten with a torque, loosen with a ratchet?

3. Do I need a 3/8" torque wrench or 1/2"?

4. Is the 65lb/ft torque setting correct for a my03 wrx for putting on 18" alloys?

5. Anyone replaced all 4 wheels with just the standard oem jack, or do i have to go to halfrauds or wherever and get them funky jacks with wheels your local garage neanderthals use?

6. Any additional tips for fitting these alloys yourself anyone want to share?

Thanks,
(Proud to be a) Muppet

Lots of questions Mr Muppet

Right lets see here now....

1. A torque wrench is required... Ideally needed not to over tighten.

2. A ratchet is required... Not essential but it's easier to put the nuts on until they bite then use the larger torque wrench to finish them off, same undoing them.

3. A 19mm socket is required.... I think that's the size I'll double check.. you can get different thicknesses (spelling ??) of these you will need a smaller one to fit in the wheels without damaging it.

4. Lots of electrical insulating tape is required to wrap up 1-3 above to protect precious alloys.... Yes you will need some tape wrapped around the socket this protests the wheels... you can buy proper plastic covered sockets but these are expensive and they may be to large to fit, when you get the wheels all will become clear.

Now I'm not sure of the correct setting on the wrench as my mate set mine for me.... someone will enlighten us no doubt
And I'm not sure which is the best size torque to get... maybe a question in the wheels and tyres section will be best to answer these couple of questions ?

5. Anyone replaced all 4 wheels with just the standard oem jack, or do i have to go to halfrauds or wherever and get them funky jacks with wheels your local garage neanderthals use?
I have used my standard jack in the past without any problems... however I have recently purchased a trolly jack to make life easier... but the jacking points on the car take some getting to know

6. Any additional tips for fitting these alloys yourself anyone want to share?

Take your time... give them a good coat of polish before you fit them it makes them easier to clean.

I rest mine on a couple of blocks of wood and a square of carpet when cleaning them off the car, be carefull in general how you rest them on the floor is advisable to avoid marking them.
And keep away from the kerbs

Phewww.... Does that go some way to answering some of those questions

Simon

5 months We was going to close it at around Christmas and when the other couple of wheel GB's appeared and this dropped away we thought it had reached it's natural end but then it re-appeared with a few more orders and as soon as I posted it was shutting you lot went mad
I'm knackered and it's just as well I'm still quite in work as I have some time to keep things on track here

Whoops - just seen this - but I would be interested in some 7.5x17" GRA's in Steel Grey for an '03 WRX - so how much for them without tyres (as I've just bought some new Michelin Pilot Sport 2's)!

Do I assume that these wheels are 0.5" wider than the standard one's if they're 7.5"?

Ordered Tuesday and they turned up today (Thursday) as promised. Magic!
Now I'll just stare at them for a few days before I pluck up the courage to try and fit them...

Just for the alloys it's £350.

i'm in Reading (Berkshire), there's probably lods of local places I could take the wheels to and get them fitted, but I thought it's not a good idea to do that as they tend to get a bit trigger happy with their air guns and scuff the wheels..?

I was thinking more like dropping in the regional section and seeing who was close to you... as in fellow scooby owner to offer some helpfull advice and a watchfull eye. You never realise who is about until you ask....

This group buy is now closed...

I would like to thank everyone who has participated in this, I'm very pleased to say it has run nice and smoothly... just a couple of wandering lockers other than that brilliant

A big thanks to Julian and Matt at Rare Rims also for allowing this to happen and continue on for 5 months we had agreed to originally let it run it's natural course but but I think we could be here for 12 months at this rate,

The Rota's are quality at a very reasonable price and I'm sure 33 people will agree with me on that statement

Once again thank you all for your participation.... and can someone start a thread in the gallery at some point so we can see all the wheels on the cars

Si, I picked up the wheels this morning from Die Post. Was suprised how light they felt
Anyway cheers for setting this up mate and pass on my thanks to the lads at rare rims for their work and proffesionalism.
I will post up some pics once I've decided what rubber to fit.

Red face My Saturday

I'd arranged to travel down to Crediton and get my wheels fitted at Rare today. Imagine my surprise then, when I got there 20 minutes before the agreed time to find the place deserted. Pi**ed off was not the word - a waste of a morning and a 160 mile round trip. I left a message on the answerphone and went to the pub in the village. I was busy explaining to the wife that they'd have to send them to me, along with a healthy discount for the hassle, when Julian phoned me.

He was very apologetic and explained that they were unable to be there today and they hadn't been able to contact me as they hadn't taken a phone number from me when I ordered. He had sent my wheels to Bristol along with lockers, nuts and centres and as a gesture of goodwill, he knocked a further £150 off the price, which more than covered my costs and made the wheels and tyres unbelievably cheap. It also cheered me up because I didn't have to go through the hassle of haggling.

All in all, I'm very happy as I appreciate that mistakes can happen and I felt that Julian dealt with me very politely and was more than fair.

Top group buy fella! I've just got to wait another couple of days for my wheels now........

Ouch that was a bad start to the day but I am very happy to see all is well now
