I was into my Landrovers and offroading back when I was 21 so was given a "Camel Trophy" watch, that was about £250...
Survived years of abuse until I learned to SCUBA dive later in life.
Well it said water proof to 200m and I only went to 50m with it, but it was too much for it and there it expired.

A watch tells the time and not much else.

I have an Accurist that i got for my 21st from my grandparents. It cost about £150 and is still going strong today, 11 years on.

I also have one from Next for £35 and thats lasted about 4 years of abuse and again is still going strong, hasn't even had a battery change.

Dont get me wrong, I love watches and would like an expensive one, but for something which I only wear on nights out its not worth the expensive outlay for me, and the blinkered view that you have to spend over £500 for one always confuses me.

My sister got a plate for her 21st, I got one on my 30th. I think they make great presents as they will last a lifetime. You'll never lose/break it or have it stolen, so its always with you as a reminder.

I have made up my mind that i would like to get a watch. This is a kind of pressie that i can say in years to come my parents brough me that for my 21st.
The watch that i like is the Omega Seamaster

As i will be 21, is this type of watch too much too soon??

At the mo i have a Rotary Swiss Commando (all SS) and it has been a gfood watch since i got it in '99. But now is getting old and needs repairing and I am starting to have probs with it.

Cheers

Nope not a blinkered view but I would hardly call an Accurist or "a watch from next" a decent watch???

I have 2 or 3 others for wearing in dodgy places like an original Casio calculator watch which cost about £18 when I was 8 or 9. A metal Nike watch from ebay for £50 and a new nike watch this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...tem=5039744879) but I dont think any of them are decent watches do you?

Do you mean are you responsible enough to have it? As long as your sensible (ish) then you wont have any problems. I think your much better of going with a stainless, than a mixed metal (it wont draw so much attention). Not sure how Omegas are for servicing but when ever I have taken a Rolex in for a service when it comes back there is no differance between it and a new watch. So every five years you have the equivelent of a new watch. All parts can normally be fixed or repaired so you essentially have a watch for life.

Depends how you classify a "decent" watch. The Next one is a retro look watch which always gets good comments, its lasted well and always tells the time accurately so to me thats a good watch

What else does it need to do except accurately tell the time and look half decent? I'm not a badge snob when it comes to anything, cars, fashion or watches.

I'd quite like an expensive watch and i'm fortunate enough to be able to afford one, but the accountant in me would rather spend the money on more important stuff.

I supose yes. I am a sensible person, and i wear nice clothes, so a watch like this would probably suit me fine i think.

I would dare to say that that Omega is a bit of a "fashion" watch, which may look good now but may look dated in 10 years time. Are you prepared to change your 21st present for something else in the future, or would you really want to keep it for life?
