Might be worth chatting to Gangsta about how good the humble Peugeot 205 (130BHP) was against his 350bhp WR1

Well the 182 clio isnt im sure, so a prepared 306, like the one we are talking about wouldnt be either.......plus the STi would spend most of its time understeering its way into the outfield

lads..they are the base spec performance model..they are a family tourer to be fair. you wanna race the sti in your 306..go for it and have your **** handed back in a hammock. theres nothing special in beating a bugeye wrx. i can't tell you how much of an **** kicking i gave a 306 gti-6 in a bone stock mr2 turbo with the same bhp as a bugeye. not forgeting for about 500 quid under the bonnet the impreza will take the 306 and wring its scrawny neck.

here..take this '' I'M A CLEVER BOY BECAUSE I BEAT BOG STANDARD WRX'' medal and go show it to your mates

personally i think the gti-6 is the blandest looking peugeot hot hatch of all time.it looks like the 1.4 lx. i'd have a 205 1.9 any day of the week..and have
What we also have to remeber -aside from my earlier comments about the critical role of the driver- is exactly what "beating" someone on the road means. I got to an overtaking position quicker than a Bentley Continental coupe the other day, does that mean my car is faster.....Of course it bloody doesn't- I'd come out worse on pretty every much performance benchmark. I just saw the opportunity earlier than he did through having a better line of sight, and got on the power sooner! The other day I'm sure a Diesel people carrier would argue that he "beat" me away from the lights...nevermind the fact that I only went up to 2500 in first gear and backed off cause the road was getting narrower and I didn't have sufficient line of sight to make shooting past him safe.

You simply can't make reliable inferences about relative performance on the road...too many variables that can negate what seems like a significant advantage on paper.

At the end of the day, you can't argue with the figures, the WRX may not have the performance advantage over some of its contemporaries that the Classic enjoyed, but anything that ducks under 6 secs to 60, and covers the 30-70 increment in the same time is quick enough for most. Just because it has cometition doesn't detract from that!

He's right you know, take a look at the top gear web site..!

The GTi-6 had a book time of <7sec and weighed just over 1200kgs in std. trim. How much would the stripped interiour lower this by ~200kgs..? Bringing it below a ton with ~ 170 bhp and inherent good handling in the right hands.. outcome not supprising really.

When my 05 wrx was standard I had a few run-ins with 182 cups and the difference was marginal. Autocar ran a track test a few months ago (latest sub £20k performance cars) and the cup came out as their #1 (mainly due to the fact that they cost <£13k) with the wrx second Golf gti 3rd... Their track times were virtually identical with cup 0.2sec quicker. (Gti 2 seconds off).

Basically underestimate a sorted hot hatch at your own perile (sp?), in any car..!

Its what makes this place interesting for sure Its only those who take things too seriously who disagree.

Stats ....Standard car
167BHP
0 - 60 = 7.2 secs
0 - 100 = 20.1 secs
140mph V max
Weight 1215KG

Therefore Seniors stripped lightly modded car (my thoughts)
172BHP?
0 - 60 = 6.6 secs
0 - 100 = 16.5 secs
140mph V max
weight 1100KG

Non too shabby IMHO.

I've used the gains on my 205 when I stripped it as a basis for the gains above.

Great isn't it.

Remember the fisherman, "John Wilson". He did a show called "Go Fishing". He would only ever fish in lakes that have never (or rarely) been fished before - so EVERYTHING had a go at the bait and always bit.

Difference between those fish and people on SN is that eventually the fish actually learnt not to take the bait.

Now, we're were we......?? Oh yeah.....

Seen plenty of scoobs with **** drivers who cant launch the car on a quarter mile, The Scoobys at its best when from a standing start, I understand that most cars could probably keep up with a WRX when rolling, but from a standing start there bloody quick as f**k. Thats when my 04 WRX starts to p1ss me off on the drag strip, its quick off the start line, and 9/10 its already won especially against FWD cars, but when halfway down you can just about see the other car keeping up or catching up if against anything decent.

Saw a Blobeye WRX STi get 15.4 on Sunday. especially when my standand WRX was getting 13.9, All down to the driver.

Why can people not understand power to weight

My humble 205 will have approx 225/ton. Work out what an STi has The Scoob will launch quicker in a drag race, but get on some twisties (tm) and there wont be much in it, trust me I know

...as do I.

People see BHP figures and automatically equate that to 0-60 times and stats. Nothing else comes into it. I to was like that once but you live, experience and you learn.

After 15 mins I approached a roundabout, joined the roundabout and continued round, I noticed to my left a 53 plate WRX in silver joining the roundabout, I noticed that he saw me (all my Nurburgring stickers make my car far from inconspicuous), with that, like a shot he was right up my jacksie. I, at this point was not planning to "race" him.

So, I was in second and pulled off the roundabout onto the dual carriageway, I was in the mood to boot it, so to speak. I did so with the WRX two car lengths behind. As I accelerated up through the gears I noticed the bonnet of the WRX behind lifting and dropping quite heavily as he went through the gears. This turned into a straight drag race......I pulled over to the left lane as I'd passed all traffic, as I did so the WRX decided to stay out in the over taking lane (becasue he'd overtake me right, of course - silly!!). His teeth were grit, his expression stern, his mood serious. Could he get past?? Could he fooock. He sat in the outside lane 2 car lengths behind me, his turbo hissing swishing pissshing and penelope bwwiissshing all the way. I eventually eased off at a spirited level of speed as my junction was fast approaching, he then continued on, I looked over with a rye smile - he however maintained his forward vision, stern and utterly unimpressed that his "supercar killer" just sat side by side with a 10 year old 306 GTi-6 with no other mods other than a de-cat and induction kit, and we both know the latter is purely for sound.

Lesson learned? The fastest car on planet earth still can't get past a 10 year old piece of 4 cylinder clutter with 95k miles on the clock........and we were 2 up.

What a car, what - a - car!!!

Happy to share this with you.
I think i smell ****e. Yes thats right, its this thread. Sorry to dissapoint u mate but this guy couldnt have been trying. My Brothers 2L 16v Nova pisses all over 306 Gti-6's but cant keep up with my scoob classic. Also your knowledge of cars must be very restricted if u think the scoob is the fastest car on the planet . Also if there so bad, why does everybody compare there car to the scoob, using it as the bench-mark? Ok i will answer that, because they are insanely jealous

No-one has said the Scoob is bad, or we wouldnt be on here.

Its just enjoyable to match a Scoob in a much older hatch, as the Scoob was always the benchmark. As for your brothers Nova pissing over GTI-6's, either *they* weren't trying, or it was a straight piece of road

A Nova can never ever be compared to a GTI-6.

To be fair he did say 2L 16valve Nova....

I must admit I quite fancy a 2L Nova, or probably newer Corsa, with 180bhp

I agree, the 306 is a much lesser car. Also, that fact one of them was being driven by a mate was enough assurance that he was trying.

I know he said 2L 16, but they still dont go round corners, even more so with the bigger engine, they are ugly and you just cant ignore the interior that slopes away from you

I remember the motoring mags and petrolheads alike raving about the handling on the 205 GTI, and then the 306 GTI-6, as well as the early Golf's, but I never recall much being said about any Nova's, or Corsa's for that matter

Nova's can look good, but they still dont handle/drive very well, IMO of course.

At the end of the day its all about opinions and if your after a quick 1/4 mile hatch or top speed in a straight line then u cant go wrong with the Nova. If its for track use, then yeah its maybe not the best choice. Get a base model and stick a 2L in and then u will **** over most things u come up against (in a straight line) and what fun it is when its a 30-40 grand BMW, Merc, Audi.....etc

Before owning my 98uk turbo, i had a Clio williams that Evo magazine rate just above the 306 gti , as the best hot hatch ever. Although the williams was a great car ,and in mine and other peoples opinions, more desirable than the pug, i didnt miss it at all after i got the scooby. Wouldnt care if it was as fast as the scooby at 60mph plus ( though its not) id still rather be driving the scoob.

I disagree, the guys point came across as though he was someone who had a dislike to scoobies and was trying to get one over them. As someone said earlier, its the agressive manner he took at the end of the thread that resulted in a backlash.

He was obviously in anger whilst reading my thread, hence his comedic response.

JCScooby, it was a new shape WRX, not a classic like yours - if you read my post before getting all aarrrhhggg grrrr angry red in the face you would have seen that point. I'm fully aware that my humble Pug isn't as quick (in a straight line) as any classic, but that isn't what I said. lol.

Cheers for your replies though, it's made my day and validified the whole point of my thread beautifuly.
