My novice attempt at a launch on slicks
Well this is my second or third launch when I'd finally got the car running right a couple of years ago.
In the film clip you can just hear what sounds like the tyres losing grip just after the launch for a split second
I tried slipping the clutch slightly and the rest is history and a 2 year road to recovery (for the car).
I think if I dialed in 5-6k rpm and dumped the clutch the gearbox would have gone bang, but too little revs and it would simply bog down.
In sprinting if the car is not shared then the tyres are pretty cold and I would have thought likely to spin more at the start.

Good start Mark. If I can get to that with these slicks I'll be very happy.
They do warm very quickly, and they are hillclimb compound, so will not tolerate any long runs, ie a lap of Donnington.
I might be lucky and get a few points this year, maybe, which will damage my ego a lot and I'll want to sell the car, about late June I think.
There is always the 911, or one of these:

Graham, I agree with Martin that you won't "stuff it" at Gurston, it's actually a very easy place to learn regards route but it is the technical aspect of the Karousel entry to ashes exit which is the hard part to get right even for me.
So come on down and have some fun.

I've spectated several times, especially when the Porsche lot are there.
It all look ok to me. Trish is a motorsport fan (even watches F1) so that's not the issue.
I would love to do it.
Just maybe when you hot rods aren't there to show me the way.

Just entered MIRA sprint with the HSA on 14/4, you should get over to that mate it's a great track to drive and you really get upto some high speeds, also the grip levels there are untrue.

Special Tarmac! kills tyres!!
I'm doing the Midland/Leaders circuit again but hope to do Doune/Harewood (fantastic).
Running a sport cat full-time now so down 15 bhp ish?

Paul define a good one!
I am confused over the claims of some, the non MoT of others.
I am getting a lot of mixed messages.
Does best = the most expensive ones?
The one on the car now feels like it's dulled the engine above 5 to 6K.
I only want to buy a sport cat once. (I have a small collection of them already)

Yes?
But the H&S 100 cell is much larger in dia than the Ninja is.
The dia must compensate for the elements of the cat to allow the restriction to be accommodated.
Your Milltek cats are huge Andy compared to the Ninja.
There must be something in that, obviously the 'size does matter' equation!

Yes, got that , 100 cells /in square or cm square, but the width of the cell wall, the foil used in the cat, needs to be accommodated in the cat dia.
Thus a H & S cat at a larger dia than the Ninja must have a more efficient gas passage that leads to the claim of a '2 bhp' drop in power compared to a decat pipe.
Seems to me the H & S and Milltek d/p's are the only ones with big dia cats so flow the best?
I'm trying to fit a cat that will not disturb the map I have in the car from Andy.

Just as an aside, I'm afraid rob had to take away his car on a trailor today, so I don't think you need to be worrying about him just yet.

Paul:
I would rather worry about Rob along side me justling for the position!
I hope he will get it all together very quickly.
The Harriman clan are very resourceful!
So: the best sport cat is?

I would say the Miltek centre could be "fitted" into your exhaust. Otherwise, the H&S downpipe is about the biggest and probably the most unrestrictive. But generally I've found them all to be pretty good if they're 100cell and about 5" diameter.

Don't understand #1174 above from Paul.
Anyway, I'm not sure this is my thread anymore!
Or if ANYONE ever tells the truth!
See you at Loton, maybe Curb, but snow expected in the Midlands.
That sounds applealing...

Andy: it is #1124 I'm refering to, sorry.
Washed 18 cars today and leathered every one for Red Nose Day at work, started at 6.30am and the final drop of water fell at 3.30pm.
It is hard to see the keys let alone hit the right one!
I have had a note from Rob so understand things precisely now.

I didn't lie. Rob's car HAD to leave us on a trailor, it has no tax, but perhaps you should worry about him though, just a little bit!
#1133
No Paul, no need for me to worry.
He was faster than me last year and I accept that totally.
2 others were also faster if not as fortunate as me last year.
If I've given the impression that I am the fastest/quickest then that is not so and I've never claimed that, but I have had some good results this last 2 years since the AST's went on. That was a real turning point for me.
I've said before, this year will be personal bests and trying to get more from the car.
I am no racing driver.
The car flatters the success I've had as it is so good due to the mods and those who have tweeked it.
Rob will have very similar power etc and great suspension via AST/PowerStation, and is far better at taking calculated risks than I am at nearly 2 x his age.
I think I will be able to learn a lot from Rob and his brother, and I hope he will get an Impreza closer to the EVO's this year with his skills and your tech input.
I will certainly try to chase him and the rest of the Class as hard as I dare, I'm not ready to fall-over just yet.
I have regularly come 2nd in class, some times 3rd, and even first!
That will change, hard to accept maybe, but that is life. Other's turn now to shine.
Sometimes I do regret starting this thread, but it has been entertaining at times, but has also bought too many to realise what a challenge the sport is and hence the 'competition' arriving.
There will be 4 Impreza's at Loton next week.
3 years ago there was me alone.
There is a lot more to hillclimbing for me personally than the race, and everyone who does it knows what I mean.
I will be going to see how Rob does tomorrow.
I look forward to his adventures and the thread.
Graham.

"There will be 4 Impreza's at Loton next week."
Maybe not. Just took mine out for a blast this morning.
Sounds like it's 'lunched' itself!! Very nasty noises, g'box internals? anyway, it won't idle, just cuts out when you slow down - not too promising. Get it checked tomorrow - see what happens.
Getting a bit fed up!

That's not good at all.
*******s!
Just been to Curb to see Rob's going and it is VERY strong. Sounds crisp.
His brother's EVO is somewhat crisp too...
And as for the bloody AUDI V8...............we are doomed.
Hope it is not something too bad, let us know.
Seen Rob's new Thread?

Fingers crossed that whatever it is can be sorted before Friday!!
Yes, seen Rob's thread - interesting stuff.
Even if I don't have a car, we'll be coming up for the weekend anyway.

To anyone who has followed and enjoyed this thread as I have since it's first page I think you might be interested in a Hillclimbing/Sprinting thread I am trying to get off the ground which is more towards the racing than the tech', not to take anything away from this thread of course as it will always be my first port of call when logging on and will probably be going strong when I hang up my racing boots in many years time! But if you sprint or Hillclimb, or would like to, come post your goings on and results/ideas/questions/experiences just blog your ***** off basically.
Graham has got in there good and early and I hope more of you will follow!

I would like to get this thread running as a techie thread on chassis mods again as Rob's great new Hillclimb Diary thread is now blossoming for the sport.
The Sti needs some deeper work on the suspension as I'm not at all convinced I've got the best out of it yet.
This situation is expanded as I now have a set of real AVON super sticky tyres for the track and they are crossply construction.
Max performance on the road is also important to me, so so fine tuning to come.
This starts with my sponsor!
Back to PowerStation soon for a check-over and a tweek or 3 for the tyres and after Loton this weekend some thinking about spring rates.
I expect to learn a lot from Rob's RA that performs so well now.
I hope those few of you with 3 way AST's can help me along!
