Searching for the perfect Chassis
I've got it sitting where the airbox was but still connected up after having a frank spencer moment when i took one of the hoses off. It wont get in the way for taking the engine out so think i'll just leave it alone. One less thing to think about when putting it all back together!
Just got the turbo/downpipe and headers to take off now then she's good to come out. I'd say its easy but taking things apart always is. Just putting it back together is the tricky bit. Took around 150 photo's yesterday and marked every connection so shouldnt be a problem.
Think the next time i do it though i'll just drop the subframe onto a trolly and lift the shell. Would appear to be the easier way.
(sorry for hijacking the thread!

Competition requirements:
Richard's RA was running in the Loton Park Championship last sunday (ref page 20: Bigbrakes) so does not need a cage.
You must have the ignition isolation sticker on the steering lock/key, you must have yellow tape on the battery neg cable, you must have a time strut and you must have race numbers of correct size and COLOUR!
In other Champoionships that run at Loton/Shelsley etc at local and National level, you must have a 6 point cage and 4 point harness additionally, BUT you must check all the small print.
If you want to go fast and try hard to do so the above and a good seat will help you do this and go home in one piece.
Accidents DO happen.

What makes you think that the AST`s are the correct suspension for your type of compition, after much searching I have found that they were designed for track use, and not tarmac rallying [hillclimbing be of the same when it comes to settings, ie mollys gap to name but one], after reading your thread, you have said in your opinion you belive last seasons spring rates were more compliant, is this due to the short nature of the run time or the fact it can be tight and twisty, sorry for so many Q`s, but I have to start some where, and you are by far the only one that is prepaired to put it up for all to see...

Dai: All this is personal experience.
I originally hill climbed on AVO coilovers.
Replacing them with AST's showed just how bad they were.
I tried 50/40 rates and all was well. I then asked for 60/50 rates and went faster everywhere, BUt, the car was harder to drive. You needed to be carefull where you applied the 407 bhp i have! In the wet things were harder still.
With the 50/40 you will get better traction as more of the wheels are on the ground in twisty corners. Without LSD's front and rear then traction is a major issue.
This is why I think 50 40 may well be the better set-up.
Could go back to 50/40 but only 4 races to go so not worth it this year.
Generally, the ride on the road is equal with both rates.(!)
I do wish more would 'expose' their findings on here, but never mind.

I think I typed this before in another thread, but, I have a KW V1 in the scooby ( my98 ) and I regret it a lot. I should have fitted the KW V3 ( 3 way ). I have the car very lowered and with the V1 it rubs a lot. I used to have a seat leon 1.9 tdi 110bhp with V2 was lowered to the max ( 65mm ) and it didn't rub... I know a scooby isn't a seat. I think bound and rebound are the key to a good handling ( sorry if talking BS ). I must have a problem in the front right wheel, caude it vibes a lot, still haven't found out what's the problem. I'll try to sell my V1 and maybe I can fit the V3
crossing my fingers ( was going to buy a 3" decat, but... maybe the V3 will came first )

It has been a full 7 weeks since I last raced the Sti on the Hills, and this weekend we are back to my Club's own hill climb in Shropshire, Loton Park.
Glorious sun all day and 3 Imprexas to face!
Rob's killer Sti RA, and Richards Sti RA all with fancy dccd's and suspensions and all that jazz, and much Youth on their side..
I hope my 'experience' serves me well tomorrow
My 3 practice runs were great.
My personal Best at Loton is 58.69 secs to climb this 1 mile long hill, with splits of 22.53 and a start split of 2.05 secs
Today my 2 runs were
58.75, with a split @ 22.53 and a 64ft split off the start @ 2.04 secs.
59.08, @ 22.54 @ 2.02
I think I am consistant!
Rob had a difficult time for his first time at the hill, but cut a great 61.something, and Richard cut (I think,)a 64.something.
Sorry if I have my facts wrong.
The dreaded EVO is now on SLICKS so dissapearing quicker into the distance...
My wife cocked-up the vids of the Imprezas, but look at this pair!
Turn the sound right UP:

Just so good. The second Quattro is Rob's dads road car!
More to report tomorrow and some more Impreza vids too I hope!
Hill climbing: Dont ya just LOVE it!

Mark:
Have a Type R V5/V6 trans in my garage ready for transplant into the Sti.
Once the season is done, the trans will go in either with stock dccd control or the wizzo Neetronics module.
Have a plated rear diff for the rear on the bench, and hope to fit a helix or even plated front lsd to the Type R trans.
This little lot with slicks (real AVON mega sticky) should move the car on next year.
I know keep saying it, but aren't you now up-n-running?
Carlos: Thanks for that, i hope to crack a second in class, unless it rains hard and I might even win!
I love this car in the streaming wet.
So much fun.

Graham,
Keep pushing we will all get there soon enough, you are doing a great job, the new mini on subaru running gear is a night mare to develop,
all jokes aside things this end have taken a turn for the worse, but trying to push on forward, will catch up with you soon..

Hi Graham
Its up and running but still leaking like the Exon Valdez. Did not have a chance to sort it before going away. Either the passenger side rocker cover or worse maybe the cam oilseal is leaking. I'm not convinced the sump it completely tight either.
I need to play with the TPS and drop it to 10% (currently at 15% at idle) this should fix the fast idle and or adjust the Air valve on the inlet.
Bought a Sparco driver side seat mount from E-bay for £10
to fix the Momo seat and its done.

Race day was a bit up-n-down today.
Held 2nd in class this morning and preyed for rain which never came, and got done by the Sunbeam on slicks by 0.3 secs.
I equaled my pb to the 1/100th, but the start was not good.
My second run was one of those runs full of blood and gore, crunched changes, fuel surge (not enough fuel...what a prat) locked wheels (where's the abs then?) and inaccurate driving; not at my best.
The EVO won and just set a new record by 2/100ths, so in all a bit down to be honest.
Shelsley next week and a full class with Rob and others to worry me!

Nice vids and report graham, although are both the launch vids you or has someone just painted my wheels black?
Bit of an eye opener for me this weekend as I was not as quick as i expected and the fast ultra technical hill made a bit of a fool out of me and highlighted my faults and the cars. I couldnt get away with flat out point and squirt tactics that realised me some decent times at the past few courses i have driven and i now have a new found respect for people who post quick times on this track, i look forward to coming back and slicing my times down to size and trying to stay on the black stuff for a bit longer.
Had a mess around with my dccd on a few islands on the way home to try and balance out the oversteer before going to far and getting into understeer and had some interesting results which i'll fill you in on next weekend.
Rob.

Got the heads off tonight. Measured the bores..3.919. New piston clearance....3.917 with .001-003 gap. Perfect! (phew!) And the bores dont even need honed
Anyone know if you can get wills rings for a scoob?
p.s. Graham, what kind of sunbeam..???

Lotus Talbot, 2.4 (2.6?) all steel on slicks and weighing about the same as a bob of sugar.
Went up the hill and cornered on 2 wheels....
Driver is ex motorbike racer etc.
He has a new car very soon:
Audi quattro A4 with twin turbo V8 4.2 litre, plastic doors/wings and things, so that should keep Rob busy next year.....

I believe (hope) that it is a Kazz plated unit, but it is actually nameless.
Bought it off Snet about 2 months ago having taken some advice off 'one who knows'
Intend to have API fit it to my Sti visc diff on the car at present unless i can find a doner rear diff somewhere with 4:444.
Be good to keep the original diff incase i sell the car....

Graham, i have a question regarding your ASTs, I'm driving the Scoobyclinic car at Silverstone this weekend with the same suspension as yourself and i'm after a base setting as i've only got 35 mins of practice which won't be enough to get it set up
just interested how the compression setting relates to the two bumps settings (and also how the two bumps settings relate to each other) anything to give me something to start with, i realise you've got different spring rates and car weight but anything's better than nothing

Just a cwp i'm afraid.
Was thinking about changing the front diff myself but thought a plated might be a bit too harsh up front. ATB has had good results i believe....

Doug:
Yes, a real tight plated would be hell on a hillclimb.
A helical gear is best (I mean ATB)
I'm on the track of one...
Kev:
I will go and check my 'clicks' now and report soon.
Works driver now eh?

Kev:
Front
Base of strut, 3 clicks from soft ie 3 clicks from fully screwed in.
Top pair:
Big knurled ring, 6 clicks back from fully screwed out
Small ring, 1 click back from fully screwed in
Rear:
Base, 3 clicks out from fully screwed in
Top pair
Big ring, 9 clicks back from fully screwed in
small ring, 1 click back from fully screwed in.
Remember this is road/hillclimb, 60/50 rates, 22 fr/24 middle setting on the rear,
Good luck and tread carefully with the above at first.
Go blow them away!
