6:30 woken up by my 20 month old daughter "ornin dadieeeee"
6:50 finally get up, into shower
7:00 get dressed
7:10 get daughter dressed
7:40 drop her at nursery
8:00 into work

In theory, but what usually happens

7:10 get daughter ready
7:30 perswade daughter to let ME put her shoes on
7:40 look for teddy
7:45 change her again just as we were about to leave
8:00 arrive at nursery
8:40 finally get to work after battling though the mum run traffic

Sell up and move out to the sticks.

I come from just outside London and I would not move back there for anything. Only go back there to visit family but its a real relief to get back home.

I LIVE in the sticks

Yet can commute easily to work in London. It makes the commute worthwhile knowing that when I get home I may not see another soul/car until I get back on the A14 again

It is great when you live 10 mins from work, outside of london. can leave my house at 8.45 and still be in work for 9. Nice drive though uncluttered back roads too.

Used to be the 6.30 get up; drive to Billingshurst Station and catch some filthy slow train to Victoria around 7.30 (miss it and wait an hour for next one) and then walk to Millbank for about 9-ish start. **** job and boss and then leave circa 6.00 pm, possible pub and get home if no train problems for around 7.30 - 8.00 pm. Hated every fecking minute.

Now work from home. Up early in summer and soak up the early morning with tea by fish pond. Few hours work and late shower etc. Wouldn't change it for the world and what no one has mentioned is it means I have been at home to watch the kids grow up and share their lives. When commuting I hardly saw them in the week and they were growing up without me as it were. I do miss the office banter but that's about all. dl

Born in London, live in London, work in London. My journey to work this morning:

06:15 Wake Up
06.30 Drive to station
06.41 Park outside station
06.45 Get train (on time). Get 3 seats to myself, read the Sun, put feet up on partition
07.10 Arrive at destination
07.15 At my desk, ready for a wonderful day at work.

Pretty easy to be honest. Journey home is reasonable as well.

Yeah, might be nice to wake up overlook the cows every morning, but show me where the 6 figure salaries are outside London. I'd be there tomorrow!

don't disgree at all with ajm or leslie. Thats why I'm doing this, so I can retire very early or move to nice quiet job and live comfortably. Life's also about sacrifices for the bigger picture.

My day....

7:50am radio kicks in and wakes me up.
8:00 get up and shower etc.
8:35 leave house and collect workmate.
8:55 arrive at office and start workingday.

Ive never really had to travel far to work, and Im not sure if I would want to.

I could get a better salary elsewhere, eg Glasgow or Edinburgh, but I would hate the travelling everyday, and the travel costs per year would take a massive chunk out of the increased wages.

That's fine and dandy if you keep a grasp of that 'bigger picture' but I see so many people disappear off to 'the big smoke' with $$ in their eyes and they never return, usually because one of 2 things happens:-

a) Their living expenses outstrips any salary benefits, so they end up no better off or worse off and trapped in a spiral of woe
b) Their financial expectations are met, however they have given themselves a carrot on a stick... i.e. a moving goal.... just one more year and I can make £x.... just another year and I can make £2x and before they know it they have missed all those years they thought they were working for!

If you view your working life as misery you have to endure in order to fund a lavish lifestyle at some predermined point in the future then you are missing out IMO....

If you enjoy what you are doing, or you are sure the benefits in the future will outweigh what you are missing now then fair play to you.... each to their own!

I aks myself that sometimes. But the second job is something I am doing on my own and at the moment I need the regular money from the first job. If all goes according to plan then I can drop the early job. I suppose it's like some of the others have said here - sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the bigger picture.

Having said that, I am often envious of the '9-5ers'.
