Alton Scooby Meet 2005

Sunday 21 August 2005

The town centre of Alton will once again be closed off on Sunday, August 21st for a meeting of Subaru Impreza car enthusiasts. 'Scooby' owners from all over the UK will converge on the town to park their gleaming, performance cars in the High St, Market Square and Ladyplace car park, whilst they discuss the finer points of turbochargers and WRXs! Many of the owners and their families will sit outside the pubs and restaurants in the Market Square, where they will be entertained by the music of singer/songwriter and guitarist Kai Jansen. Meanwhile, "Lady Margo" will be wandering around the town centre, performing her comedy juggling show in the style of an eccentric lady with a fire-juggling climax. A bouncy castle will keep the children entertained and there will be refreshment facilities and trade stands in the High St.

Over 110 Scooby owners have so far promised to come, some of them staying overnight in the Swan Hotel, and organisers hope to exceed the 150 cars seen at last year's event.

It's this weekend folks. The town centre will be shut just for us.So let's be having you.

This just has to be an ESC PINK EVENT !!!.. oh yes!!

It's about 4 miles to the Royal Oak from the High Street in Alton.

Next to the Church on the crossroads.

Bit more about food & other stuff :-

The Wheatsheaf pub in Market Square has been taken over by new people since last year and they are promising to open early and serve cooked breakfasts - their licence means they can't serve alcohol before 12 but they will feed you when you arrive! Pizza Express also planning to open early and serve bacon butties to take away. There will be an Italian coffee wagon in the corner of Market Sq and a good burger wagon in the High St for teas, bacon rolls, burgers etc.

Plenty of good places for lunch - Wheatsheaf and Market Hotel pubs in the Square and the Kings Head opposite in Market St. Just down the hill opposite Square is a new pub opened since last year - The Leathern Bottle - owned by local brewery Triple F, who do excellent real ales for those not driving! Also in Market Square for lunch is Pizza Express and Prezzo - a good Italian restaurant. There are more pubs around the town centre and a fish 'n chip shop at the end of the High St where the Scoobies will be parked.

Entertainment will be provided by Kai Jansen, the singer/guitarist, playing outside Pizza Express as last year, a wandering street entertainer, Lady Madge, who does a comedy juggling act with a fire-juggling finale (better keep her well-away from the WRXs then!) and a bouncy castle for the kids.

Parking - we'll fill Market Square first, followed by the High St and then the Ladyplace car park, which joins onto the Market Square. I'll try and reserve blocks in the car park for big groups but the rest will have to be first come, first served from 0900 onwards.

The local newspaper, Alton Herald, carries an article this week headed "Event to be a cracker for 'Scoobies' with a big photo of cars parked in the High St last year.

They have also been interviewed this week by 2 local commercial radio stations - Delta FM, based in Haslemere, and Kestrel FM from Basingstoke, both of whom will be publicising the event over the weekend. In addition, Hospital Radio Basingstoke are sending a reporter along on Sunday to record interviews with Scooby owners for broadcast later that day.
