Too many people on SN hear one person say BAH and they all follow

Bob
Not shooting the fella down at all!! I don't know him, I have no personal axe either way!!

My comments are relating to the complete and utter waste of space of these devices ....... come on, be serious, you MUST feel a right **** with a light telling you when to change gear??? Really, you MUST!!??

You MUST feel like a right **** driving a Scoob when you'd be more suited to a Mobility Scooter??? Really, you MUST!!??

That may be so, but - do you notice something??? Even Mobility Scooters where aids are really needed STILL do not need a 'Change Gear Now!' Idiot Light!!

Now, even the infirm and elderly are more capable drivers than those we see these days swamping our streets ......

What next?? A male NIVEA skin moisture light?? Lights up when your skin is about to get a little dry??

Bloody load of poncie whooooftas!!

The most sensible advice can also be the most amusing!!

Having a 'Change Gear NOW' light is so funny because some poor people actually think it does something useful!!

I know YOU are so clever and respected that you wouldn't possibly have such trivia in your vehicle!

Indeed I dont have one in my car. But thats not because they are pointless. I personally dont feel the need for one or be bothered to set it up.

And besides there's already enough flashing lights everywhere.

Pointless Bob, but then we never agree

We? Myself / Pete and the couple of others that think they're POINTLESS. Suppose im a sheep for not agreeing with you though.

My point on EVO's and Skylines is a cultural one - you dont see too many flamer kits on them either

You may as well ask the question why some people refer to 'looking at the speedo' to know when to change gear! Why - what the heck thatd oes matter. It;s the rev counter you need to look at, the speedo tells you bugger all.

With an STi, the max torque comes in at 4,000rpm so when looking at the torque spread, changing gear at 6,000rpm when it's tailing off, you'd be better changing gear at 5,000rpm, even 4,500 rpm and getting increasing boost rather than decreasing boost. Or simply driving it for the sake of driving it without trying to make it an artform (cause few of us thta good a driver anyway)!

Ah, but you need to change to ensure your're near an on boost part of the rev range too

Feeeeeeeeellllll it for goodness sake. Feel is all you need. I think my Dad used to refer to this as natural ability. That sixth sense, the instinctive impulse to do the right thing at the right time. If you don't have this then go and buy a machine that TELLS you when to shift..... "don't shift, don't shift, right...there's the red light....now I should shift....I think. Better post on SN and confirm that I've set this right". Seriously, when I'm having a drive I know exactly what to do and when. I change gear, uncousciously sense when forward motion has/is about to tail off and then simply swap cogs to place the motor back into the power band. Racing Cars are different (see previous replies) but on a road car its more organic. At the risk of a cliche, it's about being in tune with your machine - you driving it rather then it driving you.

All this electrickery reminds me of those games they have at Megabowl etc, whereby the computer screen advises the dancer where to place there feet in accordance with the BPM. Can you imagine James Brown employing one these?

Rant over

Drivers under 25 just simply cannot drive without some aids, its the Playstation Generation I suppose

Real men who drive the Real way are fast dying out, or have just progressed on to more sensible machinery ............ those of us who stay with the fast gear **** ourselves at the Kiddie Idiot Lights and stuff ...................

Point proven, you've tripped up again ha, ha. You must have been so keen to reply to my earlier comment that you completely misread it. I'll write it again and then explain it to you as you have obviously never seen inside a WRC car.

"So then, Mr. CockLink, why do the WRC drivers have an indicator telling them exactly what gear they are in? Don't tell me that's for the TV viewers.

Mate, you are such an ***... you trip yourself up in so many of your threads."

I didn't mention indicator LIGHT, the indicator is numerical i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 and right in front of their eyes. So why do these super human drivers require an indicator to tell them what gear they are in? In fact don't bother replying Pete, cos you don't know and I don't care

see ya luv...

I suspect like you, when filling-in forms I find myself frustratingly having to tick the "60+" age group box and admit to raising my eyebrows to excessively stickered, neon-lit, flamer equiped versions of what I drive, I also have to admit to a liking for certain more useful and informative gadgets. Yes, I have a "cocklink", PSi3 monitor, boost, oil pressure/temp. gauges and an Origin thingy. The rev light was standard. I also have enough brain cells left to remember very clearly the cars I had in my youth and the "fashionable" items of crap I bolted onto them! I remember well my Cortina GT (1963) - no hub caps, sticky number plate on the bonnet, "Helphos" swivel spotlamp (who remembers those?) 48w spotlamp at the back as a reversing lamp, musical air horns, noisy exhaust------the list goes on! I was 18 then and I reckon if I was 18 now I'd be doing something very similar to what you snigger at now!
Come on Pete, were you always 70 or will you admit to being "one of the lads" once?

So they don't know what gear they are in without a visual aid then. They can't feel the engine etc. FFS don't tell Pete, he'll explode into frenzied posting, he needs his sleep at this time of night

Ofcourse they can, it's just another aid to get the best out of the driver and finally that's my point to Mr CocklinkLewis: just because we have a rev indicator and use it doesn't mean we need it but we like to talk about it every now and again.

As Pete pointed out earlier, these drivers are at the peak of their competitive sport; the visual aids they use may make a great deal of difference to their performance in a stage. The same cannot be said of Wayne on his way down to B&Q.
