Pete, I have a theory about your aversion to the Knocklink, it was you calling it a 'cocklink' that gave it away.
I recon that every time you read about it, it drives you mad, reminding you of that common 'coffin dodger' problem, you obviously suffer from, of COCKSHRINK..!
As for your crusade against the ****, it started well (oil change procedure) and then rapidly descended into your usual diatribe..!

Has pslewis got nothing better to do than interfere in threads that have started by someone asking a perfectly sensible question in relation to a technical issue, asked by someone that has made some changes that they have done to improve their own car in their own eyes (which in other's eyes might worsen the car) ?
So instead of some USEFUL back and forth information being exchanged we get crap about cocklink ? I've a JDM WRX which I purchased in FULL knowledge that it had an ECU which meant that even using Optimax plus Octane booster still meant that I was running a risk - a Knocklink (correct spelling) would help indicate that the detonation which I KNEW was a possibility with my car might well be occurring and instead of potentially blowing up the engine I would be able to continue driving safely having taken the Knocklink (correct spelling again) activity into account.
I sometimes read threads like this and can find them useful but repeated irrelevant posts within them soon result in me going elsewhere.
If pslewis appears to have little else to occupy his life then can he please bugger off into muppets and get absorbed in some of the randon junk in there.

My Knock(****)Link is pretty much dead after my TEK 3 - but I do get an occasional red light during - of all things - decel. No probs under load but will flick red for a fraction of a second when coasting down foot off accelerator. Doesn't worry me.
The only other time I had red was after the original map - had a few overboost problems and the KL went mad during fuel cut. 20 minutes with the mapper sorted that out. Give your mapper a ring though just to put your mind at rest.

guys what ever all this talk is about
what I have found with my car
first tek3 - cel lights and red lights was told it was fine
got paniced by scoobynet
second tek3 - far less reds still to many amber ( mainly on hot days ), changed plugs, still the same, ran on booster very odd green and happy
spent to long on scoobynet = new turbo
third tek3 mapped with booster, must have checked knockling 5 times and still only one green
take it back to your mapper if he's any good he will have no problems looking at it again or get some booster for the warmer weather \ sunday blasts to see if it quiets things down

Normally i don't even have a green while cruising. I was thinking that my KL was playing up, but what happened in the evening scared the cr@p out of me!! Especially as i'm off to the ring next friday!!!
I've seen the whole 5 light up suddenly on my 03 STi PPP just as you describe. If I know I'm going to go quick on a particular trip, I use a drop of Millers OB - works a treat.

this has got to be destined to be the longest thread.....i feel it in me knocklink!!
heh heh.
actually 4 engines died on me and i hadnt a knocklink for any of them!! but it was no surprise...after the first one i expected the rest to go like they all do. fuel in this part of the world is simply crap and crucifies subarus in particular. bad ingredients=crap cake
i monitor knock now on the commander and its amazing the variation of peak knock activity from fill to fill. ive had to pull ignition back by 7degrees immediately after one fill of pistrol while another day ive been able to advance by 2 degrees. my point is that maybe this engine hasnt died because im monitoring knock now.

It's likely the activity on the knocklink is due to the noises from the internals as you lift off the throttle - I guess you were 'pressing on' / high boost at the time and as you lifted off the knocklink went to red ... when mine was mapped Andy.F said you should hear the clatter those bearings make when you lift off after being under power ... its NOT det, but just the movement of the rods in the big end bearings, or the crank in it's main bearings, which may show signs ofwear but isn't imminently fatal to the engine.
The increase in knocklink activity recently is due to the hot weather, the intercooler can't cool the charge down enough and hence a bit of det ... octane booster would fix that problem!
